"I ordered a used version of an Inlingua text book which still hasn't arrived after more than two months. I should have suspected a scam when Abebooks charged nearly the same amount for shipping as the cost of the book. They charge expedited shipping costs and then ship their books through a media mail rate without any tracking. This is an unethical business practice. I've contacted them several times to request a refund without success. Now Abebooks simply ignores my inquiries. Nor have they responded by refunding the approximate $40.00 cost of the book with shipping costs. This business needs to go out of business due to their fraudulent business practices. DO NOT TRUST ABEBOOKS. You'll regret doing business with this company if you do. You have now been warned! Read the other reviews if you need to be further convinced. I'm going to report them to the Better Business Administration. Be wise and look elsewhere to purchase your books!"
"I saw a listing for a book at a good price from Irish Booksellers through abebooks. I wrote to them to ask if the book was still available, and Sarah wrote back to say it was still in stock at the price listed. I ordered the book, then received an email asking for $98.00 additional to cover the cost of shipping due to the weight of the book. I looked up the weight of the book on amazon: IT WEIGHS ONE POUND! (Shipping would be from Portland, ME to NYC.) Clearly, they didn't want to honor their listed price because they saw that other booksellers were asking more, despite Sarah's indication that the book was available at their listed price.
I complained to abebooks and got a customer service agent who didn't seem to understand my problem with this. I asked him to forward the complaint to his supervisor, and I got a glib reply saying pretty much, "Sorry you're not happy." I also checked the bookseller on yelp and saw that there are numerous complaints about Irish Booksellers. I'm surprised and disappointed that abebooks doesn't seem to care if their book dealers are dishonest."
"They want you to pay for a restocking fee and reshipping fee for their mistake. They are nuts. Don’t do business with them. Should of read the thousand of negative reviews before."
"After a long delay they sent me a wrong title book. And they don't process refund. I received an email that I should mail the received book with a traceable shipping method and the seller will only initiate the refund IF they receive the book. It's stealing. When you charge people $10 and then after a month, you send them a $1 book and don't accept to refund."
"I am a collector and buy specific book covers by a certain author. GlassFrogBooks had a book I had been looking for for quite some time. The transaction proceeded smoothly and I received the book in a timely manner. However, the book I received was a different cover than what was pictured on the website. I initiated a refund/return and was contacted by email from someone named Lindsay. She acted like I was in the wrong and went on and on about how according to her, I received the correct item and that it wasn't their fault I wasn't happy with it. I explained my situation regarding the specific book cover that was on their website and yet again, Lindsay tells me that "I received the correct item." She did not offer me a refund, even after I sent the book back. They are scammers....beware!"
"Inaccurate book descriptions, high prices, lack of customer support, no integrity. DO NOT order from this company."
"This manipulative, perhaps criminal symbiosis ( AbeBooks/ GlassFrogBooks) is engaged in illegal price machinations schemes. After ordering a book from them for around 32 dollars, next day my order was canceled as unavailable but the same book appeared on Amazon for more than 800 dollars and was perfectly available from the same seller GlassFrogBooks. Company had never returned my emails to explain why’d this happen along with generic, computer generated answer from Amazon that was not related to my question to them( Amazon). Looks like they all involved in illegal price gouging practice. Definitely needs attention of Federal Trade Commission and IRS."
"I ordered the book over 2 months ago and followed up after over one month after the order hadn't arrived. They said it was lost, apologized and resent it. Then today I receive the package and it was the wrong book!
Completely useless, worst transaction I have ever had on Abebooks. Posting as a warning to future buyers. Avoid WFL Books from Holtsville NY USA, they are liars and frauds. Read other reviews about them if you don't believe me and look at their poor rating. They also go by the name Vergo Books.."
"Abe Books is the WORST! Don't believe their listings as to where a book is coming from! Won't refund return postage EVEN IF it is their mistake or an incorrect listing! They may reply to emails, but then all email communication ceases and you will NEVER hear from them again, even if they say that they will refund you. BEWARE!"
"I ordered a book from them because it wasn't on Amazon. It never arrived, and it probably was never shipped. I didn't know when I ordered it that they do not ship with tracking numbers. Demands to show me proof that the book was shipped as they kept claiming were met with polite non-responding responses in form-letter fashion, with the fake sincerity saying how important it was to them to respond in a timely fashion -- so how hard is it to look up a tracking number?
I asked for a refund after three weeks of waiting and their promising the shipment would take 4-6 days, but they insisted in making me wait until the last possible deadline. I could not confirm that they had the book or had shipped the book or what delivery time they intended to meet or who they had shipped it with.
I checked on the customer reviews for this store and found there were scores of people having the same problem that finally had to make a claim for a refund to their credit cards. I finally got the charge reversed on my credit card. I pity those that ordered it some other way than by credit card since they were trying to make me "apply" for a refund on their web site. Nuts to that.
Recommend not doing business with these guys. Think it might be a scam, taking orders, collecting money and then banking other people's money for a while until they get it back."
"I ordered a number of used books for my son through AbeBooks in August because his school ran out(even though I did not wait until the last minute). I received all of the books however the Biology book was missing intermittent pages and an entire chapter even though I checked the ISBN number. This was not discovered until January. The chapter page is present but the subsequent pages were not. I sent an inquiry to abe books who then forwarded it on to the seller. I feel like this is an extenuating circumstance that could not have been identified unless someone knew the book well or went through page by page. The response I received was "unfortunately we are not able to accept this item for a return as it has been more than 30 days since the estimated date of delivery." There is also no way to call them to discuss with a human deing.
As a result I have asked the school to remove AbeBooks from their recommended list and they assured me that they would. The customer service is poor and I will never order anything from them again. I now have to go purchase this book for a second time."
"Glassfrogbooks cancelled my order so that they could relist it at a much higher cost. I ordered a book on Abebooks from this seller, Glassfrogbooks. The seller, Glassfrogbooks, had the book, Mississippi:State of Blues, listed on Abebooks for $91.20 which I ordered. I then got a message that they wanted 25% more for the book due to a pricing error. Abebooks told me AbeBooks provides booksellers the option to request extra charges to cover the cost of shipping heavy or over-sized books or multi-volume sets. Booksellers can also use this feature to request sales tax when applicable, or to purchase tracking and/or signature confirmation for an expensive item. Glassfrogbooks excuse said nothing about increased shipping or additional taxes or anything like that, they just wanted more money. I didn't agree to this and I found the book listed on Amazon for $199.66, more than 100% more than it was listed on Abebooks when I ordered it, and again free shipping. The description is identical to that on Abebooks. Glassfrog have relisted the book for $186.32 and no shipping. The book is now listed at $309.80 on Amazon and $254.88 on Abebooks. This was not a matter where they needed more for shipping or taxes. Some other customers have had a similar problem with glassfrogbooks when they purchased a book through Amazon:
1 out of 5 stars
Seller refunded my item after I received an email that it had been shipped and immediately put it up for sale 30x the price I had paid for it. They claimed that "We were in the process of packing and shipping out your order from the warehouse when we discovered significant damage." Overall, this is a very dishonest company and I would caution anyone from doing business with them.

Glassfrogbooks claim A+ customer service, that is a lie. When I asked Glassfrogbooks about the 25% increase they merely responded that there had been a pricing error. Theyre next response was Unfortunately we cannot reverse the extra charges requested. There was a pricing error and this cannot be undone. You can cancel you order by following the steps below and purchase elsewhere. That was not an acceptable response from an A+ customer service bookstore. Abebooks has not allowed me to rate or review this seller in order to warn other purchasers of Glassfrogbooks selling habits. When anyone place an order based on information provided, they should be able to have confidence in the seller and the website promoting the seller."
"and told me they had 8 emails to PP. Did they ever contact me by email? Nope. Seller: Gian Luigi Fine Books in NY"
"I purchased a book and within 15 minutes AFTER the confirmation they requested additional funds to cover shipping (labeled as free) as they made an error . I contacted them via email and was told I could cancel my order. they would not stand up to their end of the deal. Extremely unhappy with this. "
"Love this book store so much. Already got up to 5 books from here. Dream of the signed book from J.K. Rowling :)"
