"I placed an order for a 77” LG OLED TV on 25 November with free shipping. Within 1 minute I received 2 phone calls from a New Jersey number (***-***-****). Great, who hasn’t seen this tactic played out before? I was disappointed as I’d previously thought that Abe’s was a legitimate operation. On the other end of the phone was Steve, a fast talking sales clerk who proceeded to explain he was calling to verify that I was the one who placed the order and that someone else wasn’t using my card. I told him I didn’t give a credit card, I used a 0% for 6 months financing deal. He then told me that because of the size and weight of the item, and because of its glass panel, they’d have to charge me $700 in “shipping insurance.” I told him that wasn’t on the original invoice - which said “free” next to the shipping charges - and that I’d have to clear it with my wife before proceeding. He said he’d wait on the line while I talked to her. I explained that she had just left and wouldn’t be back for another 1.5-2 hours. At this point he offered to “upgrade me” to their white glove delivery service for free. Sure, that’s great, but I still need to talk to my wife. He tells me to hold on while he talks to his manager.
After a brief hold, he comes back and tells me that he talked to his manager who had overheard the conversation...then he pauses, which was odd considering the feverish pace at which he usually spoke (often interrupting me). I say “ok”. He tells me I’m in luck, they want me to come back in the future and buy more TV’s, so he’s going to knock $100 off the shipping insurance for me. Again, I say that’s great, I need to talk to my wife. I then asked how long I had to cancel, and Steve told me they only had a couple of this TV left so he couldn’t hold it for long; when I asked how long that was, he did the “ask the manager” bit again. I said I could get back to him in a couple hours, and he irritatedtly replied to get back to him as soon as possible at ***-***-****, x272.
Oddly enough, when my wife was leaving, the Bluetooth in our car connected and she heard a piece of the convo, so she called me to ask what was going on. I explained the bait-and-switch “shipping insurance charge” and we both agreed we didn’t want to do business with a company that was clearly deceptive in its sales practices.
So I called Steve back, left a message, and called back again 15 mins later to request a cancellation. He hung up on me once, put me on hold randomly once, did another “talk to the manager” to knock the “shipping insurance” charge down to $300 from $700. I said no thank you, just cancel the whole order, and after defeatedly saying he’d cancel it he hung up on me again. A cancellation confirmation popped up in my email box literally 5 seconds later.
Between the significant upcharge after the fact as well as the pain of having to stiff arm repeated haggling attempts, who knows what other surprises would have awaited me with shipping, warranty issues, etc. I’d rather pay more money to a reputable company with good customer service than deal with this outfit. Buyer beware!"
"Excellent selection and prices. I came very close to purchasing an LG OLEP tv with an older processor. For $100 more I got the newest generation. I'm certainly glad I did my homework and particularly found this site"
"The shopping portion and website are very easy to use. Abe's of Maine was the best price I could find online for a Canon Rebel T7i. They could have used a little more detail in the product information like if it includes a battery, charger, and strap. "
"Ha! The order hasn't shipped or arrived yet, so the experience isn't finished, but the prices are outstanding and the checkout process is as good as most. I asked for 2 day shipping, hopefully it can make it out of the snowy northeast and into my hands before the event I've got to shoot takes place, just a couple of days later than the expected arrival date. Thanks Abes!"
"I have shopped from Abes years ago and it is nice to see consistent low pricing, ease of ordering easy navigation throughout the website. Thanks Abes"
"The price is good (cheaper than H&B Photo Black Friday price) and ordering was easy. Now all I have to do is wait for the purchased item. "
"good website and pricing."
