"Affordable Tours: Gate 1 Travel 11 Day Essential South Africa Tour with Victoria Falls Review from the Feigelmans from New York, reviewing the tour beginning on 5/25/18.
Let us begin with our initial contact with Derek Miller, our Travel Consultant with Affordable Tours.com. Derek helped us locate a South African Tour that would fit well with our traveling schedule requirements and responded promptly to my questions before and during the trip.
We were generally pleased with this Gate 1 tour, our first, and would rate it as a four on a five-point scale. First, we were especially pleased with our tour guide, Marlene Neumann, who worked diligently in shepherding our large group of 49 travelers around efficiently and for resolving a problem that we ourselves encountered by not leaving a sufficient amount of time for transferring from the tour’s end to our next flight. She resolved this problem at virtually no extra cost to us, which we greatly appreciated.
We were very pleased with the tour’s choice of a hotel in Capetown, Capetown Lodge, which was conveniently located in the downtown area and included all amenities most travelers usually expect. The activities of a visit to Table Mountain and cable car ride, optional tour of the Peninsula including a visit to the Cape of Good Hope, visit to the Penguin Colony and Botanical gardens were all very interesting and worthy tour sights. We also selected the optional Winelands Tour on the last free day of Capetown which was most satisfying.
The next part of the trip, flying up to Johannesburg and 3 hr bus coach service to the Mabula Game Lodge was handled most efficiently. Yet, here is where the trip failed to meet our needs and perhaps the needs of most of our fellow travelers. No time was allotted to explore the highlights of Johannesburg, and its museums depicting the country’s important and colorful history and we felt the choice of the Mabula Lodge was a serious mistake for conveying the experience of seeing animals in the wild. (And many of our fellow travelers felt similarly about the deficiencies of this latter experience). The accommodations and food at the Lodge were largely satisfactory but viewing some of the animals with identity tags on them and learning about the careful management of all the animals on this reserve led many travelers to feel this “wilderness experience” was just one step up from a zoo and hardly meaningful for satisfying their thirst to see animals in the wild. After the completion of the Gate 1 tour, we went on to Kruger Park, staying at Protea Hotel by Marriott @Kruger Gate and found many worthy touring opportunities (morning, afternoon, evening and full day options) to see animals living and surviving in the wild. And the Kruger trip is just about as far from Johannesburg as Mabula is. The replacement of Mabula with Kruger, would, in our opinion, make for a more genuine animal viewing experience
The last part of the trip, visiting Victoria Falls and staying at the Azambezi River Lodge, were good choices. The hotel and meals were satisfactory; the Optional sunset riverboat cruise was interesting and meaningful; the tour of the falls was well planned and eminently fascinating. Thanks to the efficient management of Ms Neumann, (“Momma Africa”), our diverse group of travelers from at least a dozen countries, blended well and had meaningful associations together.
