"I have used Borrowlenses.com for several years, and in the past, my experiences have been positive. However, on my latest rental, one of the video lights didn't work correctly, and a mounting stud was missing. These issues caused me to be unable to use the equipment and forced me to do the video shoot with only one light. I called support and spoke with a gentleman named AC. He asked me to show proof of the equipment problem. I had taken pictures of the defective light, which I emailed to him after our call. It took a month to hear back from AC, at which point he said there wasn't a problem with the light, and there was no missing part. I then asked to speak with a manager. AC never responded. I would not recommend using borrowlenses due to problems with their quality control and very poor customer support. "
"I recently rented a G9 with 2 lens. The company service was fantastic. Great price and very friendly people. I will be shopping there again. Thanks for the service."
"I'm a college student majoring in Digital Communications. I was recommended BorrowLenses by my professors for a final film project. We rented a GH5s and a Leica 48mm lens. The cost was already extremely heightened because for some reason they force you to buy one-day shipping no matter what. We rented the camera, it was shared between 3 classmates for our shoot. Somewhere along the way, someone dropped it on the floor (not from a high place) and it scratched the LCD. I sent it back not noticing the scratches. However a week later I received an email containing two things. One was that I'd "damaged" the screen and would be given a bill for it after the "tech team" assessed it. This was ok for me, however, what **** me off was that we packed the lens hood and had photos of it on the lens in the box. They told us it was missing and that they needed to "assess" that as well. So, I ended up paying $120.00 for a lens hood I definitely sent with the box. I also just received an email today that put me in hysteria. To quote part of it "Item: Panasonic Lumix GH5S Micro Four Thirds Camera
Cost of repair: $342.00
Since you didn’t purchase GearGuard, you’ll also need to pay a “loss of use” fee, which is the rental rate for the time the item was out for repair. The item was out for 13 days, which equals $185.50 in loss of use fees. Please know that we use the fastest service possible to limit the amount of time the gear is out for repair.
Here’s a summary of the total amount owed:
Repair fee: $342.00
Loss of use fee: $185.50
Total: $527.50 + tax"
I've sent them several emails asking for time to pay it back as well since I'm waiting for another paycheck. Once again no responses. Will not be using them again."
"Asking for a $500 deposit days after the order had been placed.
People need to know the total cost of renting an item.
They use hidden fees and deposits."
"First time renting lenses and I have to say I was blown away with the service. I accidentally rented the Canon 70-200mm f.4 L, I actually meant to order the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L version 2 lens. After noticing I made a mistake, I immediately contacted customer service and they were able to fix my mistake and ensure I received the correct lens. And on top of that, I received the lens a whole day eariler than expected!
I will DEFINITELY do business with Borrow lenses again!
A very satisfied customer,
Johnny P"
"I had placed an order with them before that was received without error. I ended up cancelling the order as I found a less expensive and more convenient option. Fast forward to today, I decide to test out a canon 5d mark iv before purchasing for our studio. I was asked to send in a copy of my drivers license. Within the hour, I received an email back stating that I was too risky to conduct business with per the "underwriters advice". What within my drivers licenses reveals risk association??? Was also told that current and future orders would be cancelled. Will gladly not do business with this poor company. Rent elsewhere or simply buy!"
"Great products but will not use them again due to horrible customer service. Paid extra to have a lens shipped faster because you have to sign for it. It did not show up when i paid for it to and i needed it to photograph a wedding the next morning. UPS was by far the worst villain in the situation to deal with but i never got to use the lens and when i contacted borrowlenses.com to see if they were willing to help at all with any sort of refund they somehow managed to turn it around and make it seem like it was my fault?! Extremely frustrating experience that took up way too much of my time just for loads of disappointment "
"Borrow Lenses is company full of scammers, very untrustworthy and disrespectful.
DO NOT RENT FROM BORROW LENSES!"
"The customer service is world class!! I love picking up from the store in San Carlos because the staff is always willing to give me advice. They even check to make sure I have everything I need for my rental (which is great for forgetful people like me). I mostly use these guys for rentals but I've recently ventured in to purchasing from them. I was a little hesitant at first (because it's used gear) but everything works beautifully. Stellar service and gear! "
"Use Lens Rentals Instead!! This was my first and last time using Borrow Lenses to rent a lens. When i returned the lens, i got an email saying there is scratches on the lens hood. The lens itself is fully functional- it’s all cosmetic. They say not only are they going to send the lens off to be fixed and I have to pay for that cost (which I don’t mind) but I also have to pay a rental fee for every day that lens is out of commission. They wouldn’t provide me with a tracking number so that i could track it myself. They wouldn’t let me buy a new lens and just Keep their old one, nothing. It is without a doubt the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Not only that, today I get an email of the customer service rep talking about me to another worker. This is appalling and very insulting when i simply want receipts and to follow this process they’re trying to charge me so extensively for. I very highly would recommend not using this company. "
"Was counting on borrow lenses to ship a newly released nikon camera to me for an upcoming trip. Ordered weeks in advance to ensure I would get in time. A day before the camera was supposed to ship and already after charging me the full rental amount the call me to say that they don’t have enough copies of this camera to fulfill the rental order. Don’t list something on your website claiming it will be available unless you actually have enough cameras to rent. Will never do business with this company again. "
"Horrible horrible company! I have atleast 30 emails threatening me with jail time over and over again as well as suing me If I don't return or pay $3000 for a camera that's only worth $900 and that I rented 10 months ago and returned just as instructions stated. The man claims they never got it but they took over 9 months to contact me???? He said he apologized for the delay but never apologized for my mental and emotional anguish as he sent me 5-6 emails a day over a few weeks time. I'm pretty sure if it wasn't received and I bought insurance btw that they would have made it a priority to contact me asap! LYING UNETHICAL COMPANY AND HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!"
"Needed a second camera for a feature. Rented the same camera as the one I own. Worked fine for two days then simply would not record. Then noticed it was having strange vignetting problems with the lenses. Submitted my complaint, returned the camera. And surprise - they couldn't find anything wrong with it. And they wanted to charge me for a new battery and charger because their bar code stickers fell off. Two days of complaining and arguing and they did not charge me for the missing bar codes (and accepted the fact that what they received was in fact their own gear) but still charged me full price for the rental.
To say this is poor customer service is to be polite. It's rather telling when nobody involved with the company will give out their full names. Really shady operation. Do not do business with them. And don't be fooled by their pricing. You're better off shopping locally. "
"I ordered a camera + some other gear for a shoot I'm having this weekend. I read their policies and it says 99% of their orders DO NOT require a deposit. Once I ordered everything and they charged my card, I got a follow up email to verify my account. I sent a photo of my ID and credit card. Shortly after I get an email stating they "determined" I needed a $3000 deposit. I called their verification department and asked how they "determined" I need a $3000 deposit. He didn't have an answer, he just said that's what underwriting had determined. I was then told even if I got a cheaper camera and less equipment the deposit would still be $3000. With no reasonable explanation for the deposit requirement I was forced to cancel my order days before my shoot! Its very obvious they seen my ID and "determined" I needed a $3000 deposit. For now on I will only send my ID with my photo blacked out. "
"DO NOT RENT FROM BORROWLENSES. Awful, Awful, Awful company. I decided to try this company on one of my professional trips to Chicago. I tested the equipment with a couple test shots, and it seemed to work fine. When I got to my location, the camera kept giving me error screens. I reset it. I charged it. I recharged it. Changed the lens. Nothing was working, so I immediately emailed the company to get their feedback and they responded by saying either there would be an exchange or compensation if the camera "passed with their technicians". I am not one to write awful reviews, and I am usually pretty easy to work with so I asked for an exchange so I could finish my rental date and have them look at it. My exchange camera came-- super fast... that was great, because I had a session the following day--- but I turned it on--- and NOTHING. ANOTHER DUD. I feel like with so many titan type professionals backing this company up-- that they would be a company to trust. I emailed them again, after sending the now 2nd malfunction camera back--- only to find out the completely blew me off to say "Our technicians received the gear you had trouble with during your rental. Unfortunately, our technicians could not recreate the issue you experienced with your order. Technicians reported, 'Nikon D750 (3005886) worked without issues when testing it. Had no operating issues during testing.' The gear is up to manufacture standards. If you would like we can retest the gear after it returns from it's current order. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Abigail C."
Awful company. I hope professionals don't waste their money--- especially if they are relying on being paid for quality work. I am now out $1500 plus the rental fee. DO NOT RENT FROM BORROWLENSES. I will be spreading the word in my area asap-- to hope that others don't get scammed."
A rep from BorrowLenses.com, BorrowLenses, has responded:
“So sorry about your experience!
Allow me to do a better job explaining a bit more how protection of gear works and apologies again for any confusion. Deposits are a temporary hold we ask for on larger orders for everyone's protection and to keep rental costs as low as possible. These are temporary and not kept unless something breaks or is lost. Again, we apologize for any inconvenience they may have caused!”
