"Since most stores outside of Texas aren't required to collect Texas sales tax, and sales tax payment is self informed on out of state purchases, a brick and mortar store in Dallas starts out at a disadvantage. There's a reason they are able to stay in business anyway :)
The only sales people I have only dealt with are Eugene, his father, and his mother. All have been knowledgable, helpful, and very pleasant.
I have purchased three high end Nikons here and personally find the reassurance of a knowledgable staff and a local operation to be worth paying a bit more than what I could do mail-order. It's also my preference to actually handle something I'm interested in purchasing rather than relying solely on internet reviews and forum opinions. It's nice to be able to take a demo camera or lens out in front of the store and make a few test photographs.
The store stock is exceptionally deep for a brick and mortar store and even some fairly exotic items are immediately available from stock.
If your only goal is to locate the very lowest price this may not be your best buy. If you would like to have more customer service and the advantage of dealing with live human beings, I suggest you drop buy and browse."

"My husband has shopped at Competitive Cameras for 3 years - sometimes shopping over the phone and sometimes shopping in the store. The store owner is very, very knowledgeable about camera products, and has always given very sound advice.
I am especially impressed that he does not try and sell products you don't need. For instance, my husband needed a lens for a certain use, and had an expensive lens in mind. The owner said, "I have that lens, and I can sell you that lens, but you won't be happy with it for what you're doing. You'll be happier with the lens you have." "First, I like to use this local store because I can call one day, and have my order delivered the next (ground). It's easy and convenient. I have usually had good experiences with staff and prices. That being said, prices tend to fluctuate from one day to the next.
In this particular order, my paper was $18 higher than any I found on the internet, and with tax and shipping, add another $20 to the bill. It seems outrageous to me, and since I placed the order over the phone, my credit card was charged before I could challenge the high price of my paper. I have never seen this paper at this high price anywhere in stores or the internet, and quite frankly, I feel taken advantage of, like an easy target for over charging over the phone."
