"I have used InfoUSA since 2007 and often wish another company would come along and challenge their pricing and data quality.
The good news and bad news is that no other vendor seems to come close. While I would love to find a way to dramatically cut my data cost, it appears you get what you pay for. While the cost has always made me wince, I am thankful that a high quality list vendor exists who has a powerful and easy-to-use website.
Over the years I have experimented with screen scraping lists off of free web sites - it took so much time and effort that buying from InfoUSA was far cheaper.
I then tried one of those databases for $199 that claims to have what looks like the entire InfoGroup database on a DVD ROM - hardly. The data is very incomplete (I recall 50%+ phone numbers missing - my staff hated using that data) and the database interface to pull lists was so clumsy and slow that I would not want to use it even if the data was decent.
Finally, a competitor came on the scene, Database101 (aka DatabaeUSA) and I was thrilled to see if I could cut my data cost by 50% or 75% or maybe more. Unfortunately their limited web site interface selection tools did not allow me to cherry pick using maps and "excludes" as I could do on the InfoGroup site. The bigger problem was that many of the towns in the address data were wrong, often listing the name of a nearby larger city. In my business I rely on the city being correct and can't afford to have my staff revealing that we don't have the right city name in front of us when we talk to prospect from a purchased list. Maybe that issue has been corrected, but it stopped me cold.
The staff was polite, but it's hard to beat InfoGroup's Customer Service. My Account Rep John Baker has been there since my first day and continues to follow up and assist anytime I need something beyond what I can do online - which is rare, but I like having a Rep who can fix things when the self service route does not cut it.
I hope that Database101 and other competitors continue to challenge InfoGroup and ultimately find a way to provide comparable lists and service at much lower prices. It may not be possible - the InfoGroup list data, web site tools and Customer Service appear to be very hard to beat."
