"First I set up estimates with an employee, then when I called back to set up the order there were no calls returned. Waiting after several calls from myself we finally found out that the employee was no longer working there. Then after having worked with half a dozen various employees trying to make specific shipping dates work for shipping and receiving, US Holland did not pick up on the agreed upon date. There were many more phone calls, work and stress involved than I've had to deal with in the past. Although most of the employees were friendly and tried to be helpful, it seems that many times there are just notes written on the computer for another person. Normally I would expect to have a phone call returned within a short period of time. Today I was told that an employee would call me back "shortly" and when I called back a little later, I was informed that the employee who was to call me back "shortly" was not even in the building. As of yet one of my orders has still not been picked up which was promised to be picked up yesterday or today and now will have to be delayed for another half week. This has made it very difficult for the shipper who is getting frustrated with me (the purchaser). The shipper had also confirmed the shipping date which did not happen. When I asked to talk with a supervisor or manager I was left on hold for 20 minutes then the phone went to an answering machine. I called back and was then told that no managers were available. I am hoping that this last item will actually get shipped next week as promised again."

"Many times as business owners we are so consumed with our day to day operations and all of the other fires that need our attention that we often overlook our greatest assets, our employees. We are only as successful as they are. Some employees work extremely hard not having the tools they need for their daily tasks. Some are so overwhelmed and not in a position to do the right thing for their customers because we as business owners fail to empower them.

For several years I have had the privilege of working with Shannon Donahue at Freight Center. Shannon is a great example of someone who talents have been overlook by the company where she works. She is at the front line of the business and goes above and beyond when we have a problem. Unfortunately she is limited to what she can do in her current position.
As a business owner I am fully aware that every once in a long while we will come across that one employee who will stand out and be a star employee. It’s unfortunate that many companies fail to see what” the power of one” can do for our business, company culture and growth.
