"This is the case of false advertising deliberately misleading potential customers about the functionality and features of their DVI switch. As advertised on their web site this product is to be used as a switcher for one digital display between two computers with DVI video outputs. However, the only way to make it perform this function is through purchasing additional devices worth $315.32 (four additional pieces of hardware - for two switches that I bought from them). Gefen makes no reference to this issue neither in their marketing materials, nor in its technical manuals, nor on the DVI switcher page itself.
They even tried to confuse this technical issue in their communications with me - since they were able to confuse most of their other customers as you can clearly see on their forum board - but I know the facts. The EDID information is stored by the driver software - not by a "video card" hardware. There are two main graphics chips manufacturers on the market today and drivers for those chips cover roughly 90% of all video cards regardless of who actually made the card. The statistics for this market are widely available from a number of industry publications. Note that Linux drivers for the very same cards have absolutely no problem retaining EDID - all you have to do is enable EDID feature in the driver setup - and Gefen clearly is (or should be) aware of that. Their conjectures about "most manufacturers" and "small minority of consumers" were really annoying besides being factually incorrect. Overwhelming majority of the potential customers will use it with Windows and with drivers from either nVidia or ATI, neither of which provides that feature in their Windows drivers. As engineers, they also know why nVidia and ATI do not provide this feature - because of the issue with Microsoft. They know about it, yet they again conveniently leave that out of their marketing materials and continue to peddle these units as capable of fulfilling this task “as is” - without additional hardware to store EDID.

"This store has excellent products but offers different models using the same part number. This practice is ridiculous as you may very well get last years model which is has substantially different and reduced capability. So don’t buy from a dealer or risk purchasing old stock.
When you order on-line they do not tell you if a product is out of stock. But they still do an authorization against your credit card. Only three days later did I learn my product was out of stock. And get this: I had paid for two day shipping! Again it does not take a fool to realize that these are bad business practices.
The receptionist is good at running interference: she told me that the web site states whether or not these HDMI units are on back order. I asked here to show me where since I was on-line. She was then forced to restate her position. Again lying to paying customers is a bad business practice.
I would only talk to their sales team to place an order. But they can be difficult to reach.
Besides these concerns Gefen is a good company!
