Really great service and product, very happy!

"I started purchasing from the Hermits Hut in 2016 and figured it was about time I gave them a well deserved review! I've purchased basically all of my camping, climbing and hiking equipment from them after a friend said they came highly recommended; I've had the same great experience ever since. Dan is always my go-to resource as he's super knowledgable and spends a surprising amount of time with you listening to what you need and adapting his advice to suit your level of experience. If he thinks something he doesn't carry would suit you better, he'll send you over to one of his competing stores and even call ahead to see if they have what you need. He just provides all-around great service and as with everyone else who has gone in more than once, you realize the Hermits Hut is a true Base Camp 1 where customers become friends and always return for a chat or to buy gear for their next exploit. I've loved checking in with them before and after each trip to get their advice and fill them in on my most recent adventure. It's a truly great place with really great, high quality products. "I live in Redding, Ca and brought some traveling friends to Hermits Hut to check out the rock climbing shoe selection. Dan was informative, patient and so very helpful in assisting my friends find a quality shoe that fit their budget and their feet. I got in on the action and tried out some shoes too. My friends left excited about using their new shoes and happy about the deal they got on their purchases. I plan on going back and getting some shoes when my current ones wear out!
In addition to trying on climbing shoes, my friends got to try out several different climbing harnesses. Hermits Hut people know that you should never purchase a harness without hanging in it... so they have a rope set up it the store for you to do just that.
We enjoyed our shopping expedition, being welcomed back and remembered from our previous visits. For my own purchase, we picked up some tree climbing accessories from their professional arborist section.

"I live in Redding, CA where Hermit's Hut is located. My first major purchase in the store was a special order of a Western Mountaineering sleeping bag in October 2012. The bag was for a trip a few weeks away. The owner Bob called the company and confirmed that they would be able to ship the bag in time. I received the bag exactly as promised.

Recently I was shopping for a sleeping bag for my granddaughter. The owner Bob showed me a bag by another company that is not available in most stores, Wiggy's. He called the company and confirmed that they would be able to deliver the bag in time for Christmas. I received the bag exactly as promised. A slight misunderstanding about pricing came up and Bob made the situation right with one phone call.

Hermits Hut sells some quality products that are not usually carried by your larger chain box stores. Bob has owned the business for about 40 years. He has lots of great advice. I know that he prefers a phone to a computer. I picked up my orders at the store so I cannot comment about their shipping.

I will continue to shop at Hermits Hut either in person or by telephone.

"WORST EVER …… STAY CLEAR OF THIS AWFUL SHOP !!!

In many years of online shopping this one is without the doubt the worst


In May I have ordered 2 dry sacks, sleeping pad and a tent. Waited patiently 4 weeks and nothing, than sent an email.
Reply: we are waiting for a tent but THE OPERATIONS MANAGER (?) has allowed to send you 3 items and the tent will be send separately. OK, the 3 items arrived
2 more weeks … no tent. email ... no reply, email ... no reply, phone call ... Cody, the guy in charge of internet sales had no answers
Another email ... reply from Rich G (Manager/Buyer/Ski Tech/IT department): there are problems with vendor - soon we will have it. 2 weeks go by ... nothing. I ask for refund which is a simple electronic transaction. Another 2 weeks go by ... nothing. Another phone call .... finally refund done over the phone

But ….. I live in Sydney, Australia and the original shipping charges for the TOTAL order were $100, the shipping of 2 sacks and a pad was $40

So all in all I am $60 out of pocket and don't have the tent after 3 months of waiting, several emails and a few international phone calls

Currently I am emailing them re: refund me outstanding $60 in shipping charges for the tent I have not received but honestly I don't see it being a success story as all my emails remain unanswered

"NEVER buy things from Hermit Hut online! I purchased an Osprey Women's backpack in red through their online website. I was later emailed telling me they do not have that color in stock although it said it was available online. I told them to cancel my order and they said okay. FIVE correspondences later, the charge still has not been removed from my bank account. I am so angry and frustrated. Even after repeated phone calls to correct this, they still haven't managed to do it. One of the worst customer services I ever had. The sales rep is a complete idiot!!

ALSO, just to mention above, how is the average rating for this company not changing. There is certainly more than 1 review. I don't consumers to have the wrong impression. This company is a piece of poop to be considered a 5-star.

"I too have had an extremely negative experience with Hermits Hut. They attempted a "bait and switch". allowing me to process an order with their free shipping code, only to later send me an e-mail stating that "Thanks *****! But I'm sorry to say... no free shipping on Osprey packs (please check "Promotions & Coupons" section, the "Shopping Cart" page, and the "Checkout" page). We're practically selling these packs at cost. Still want us to process the order and have the shipping amount of 16.49 added?" I'm sorry to say that after you've accepted an order and given a receipt for an order, it's your responsibility to honor that order."

"My experience with Hermit's Hut was AWFUL. But, I guess you get what you pay for. I found that they offered the Gregory Baltoro 65 for the cheapest online and decided to order from them. Big mistake. I placed my order June 5th, hoping to take it on a trip to Belize June 20th. A few days after placing my order, I get an email telling me that to do not actually have the color I ordered in stock, so I had to pick another color. A week or so passed and I had heard nothing from them, so I emailed them asking where my pack was. I then got an email saying something along the lines of it should be here any day. Days passed with no bag being delivered, so I called them to talk to someone. The first person I talked to said he would call me back, and never did. I called an hour later and found out that they had none in stock and were not sure when they would. Why in the hell they did not inform me of this earlier, I have no idea. Now, the rep I was talking to says he will order the bag directly from Gregory and ship it to me, 2nd day air. Problem is, this is Thursday, I need it Saturday. I made it very clear I needed it Saturday but he said over nighting it would be too expensive. On Saturday, I call to ask for a tracking number, and he tells me he has none and to expect it on Monday. I tell him this doesn't help me, I made it clear I needed it on Saturday, and the jack ass hangs up on me. Worst shopping experience of my life. I now have to scramble to come up with a bag to take on my 10 trip to Belize with. I will NEVER shop with the atrocious Hermit's Hut again and I warn you to be careful when ordering from these incompetent idiots."

"Here's a quick review and reiterates one that I made on Yahoo but was unable to amend. The quick and dirty was that I placed an order but got no word or response for a while. I voiced my concern/complaint and received a response. They could have been selling me a story regarding the delay, but the response was earnest and apologetic. The reason why I believe them was the fact they admitted to screwing up and wanted to make it right. Admitting fault is rare nowadays. I think they did me right in the end, and that's the reason for the high review. I'd shop with them again."

"I ordered boots from Hermits Hut on Oct 23.
The company took 5 days to get the order in the mail and it arrived on Nov 5.
I couldn't wait that long and had to order boots from another store (they arrived in 3 days).
Hermits Hut acknowledged that the delay in shipping was caused by a backup on their side.
I returned the item but Hermits Hut charged a restocking fee in addition to the shipping charges back and forth I had to pay.
They refused to refund the restocking fee, despite the fact that the return was caused by their late shipping.
I find it unacceptable that I had to pay $14 in restocking fees on an order that took 15 days to arrive (in addition to $22 in shipping fees).

"I was worried about buying from a store that wasn't even listed on resellerratings, but they were a lot cheaper than everyone else, so I gave it a try.

I was pleasantly surprised when I received a shipping notification the same day I ordered and was surprised again when it arrived two days later, shipped out priority mail. I'm very happy with this purchase and the store and look forward to buying from them in the future.
