Power cables and power supply was laying loose in the box, no packaging or twist ties, no static wrap on the electronics, you can tell when an item has been removed and then put back in the box. Called the customer service who said they would email me a return packing slip, still waiting after 6 days. Item was a Christmas present which I had no time to replace. Not happy with J&R or their customer service and would not recommend to anyone."

"I ordered the HK 3490 from J&R because of reviews AND price. Two days after the order, I noticed the price had been reduced and to my delight, after contacting J&R, a credit is to be issued for the difference. We ordered another unit for our son and unfortunately, it is defective. Hey, lemons do happen. We are currently waiting for an RA number from J&R for a return/exchange. If J&R performs as they did on the price for this unit, we don't anticipate any problems.
As for the HK 3490 that is functioning; very sweet! I am using the pre-amp out to an equalizer and back to the pre-amp in for Bose 301's along with the sub-out to a powered subwoofer. Great set up as the tape monitor loop is still usable for recording/playback. The FM radio section of the tuner is very good. The phono performance is good. There are no HDMI connections, but we do those direct to the TV with analog sound back to the video sound inputs(for cable/dish TV). The digital input and optical input are great for our CD/DVD player and for even better quality sound from CD,s. If you still prefer stereo over surround sound, this is a great set up as video sound is good, music CD's, and FM stereo is (in my opinion) better quality than surround sound because of the discrete two channel power available (2.1 with sub-out is a definate plus). I don't mind the lack of HDMI ports, but it was disapointing that the "dimmer" function on the remote ONLY works on "CD" mode and not "video" modes where you would truly like the display lighting turned down while watching TV. If you want more power, you will probably end up spending a lot more $$, but this is a pretty good unit for the money. "
