"I recently went on a trip to Japan from 12/15/22-12/31/22 and purchased three 16 days SIM Card with no phone number and one 8 days SIM card with no phone number from Japan-Rail-Pass. I paid for expedited shipping and received all 4 cards within 3 days from purchase date.
When I do reviews I like to give background to my technology level. I currently work in the IT field so I am extremely competent and familiar with technology, building computers, and tech in general. I.E. I am the guy friends go to when they need help with computers or cell phones. So to me the instructions for activating the SIM cards were super duper easy, however even for the non technical the instructions read like anything else a step by step guide with photos on what to do to activate the SIM card. Once I landed in Japan I simply removed my existing Verizon SIM card, plugged in the Japan-Rail-Pass SIM card, followed the instructions and reset my phone and voila! Instant data and phone usage in Japan! It was literally that easy! The speed for the data was excellent, I had LTE for my entire trip from Tokyo, Niseko, Osaka and Kyoto. I think I only hit the data cap on it ONE DAY and it slowed down tremendously but the next day it was back up to speed again without issue. I believe the daily data cap is 35GB which is hard to hit unless your kid is watching Tik Tok all day. I had no trouble accessing the web, checking email, sending LINE messages, and even was able to send regular Apple iMessage by using my email address. All in all it worked super well and it was an amazing cost savings. For example if you used Verizon Travel Pass you would be paying $10 per day per phone. For a 16 day trip that comes out to $160 per phone. I bought 4 SIM cards for a total of $130 (with extra cost baked in for expedited shipping) in total for 4 lines of data which is well well worth the money. I opted to not get a wifi hotspot since it would require charging constantly.
Now of course not everything is smooth sailing when getting a data SIM and no phone number. I can't make calls easily at all, I tried to use Google voice and did not have any success with dialing back to the states. In addition you won't get any of the text messages being sent to your USA phone number, you can only start new texts to friends through the new SIM card, so you'll not get all texts like you would in the states. If you have 2 factor authentication that also won't work with this data only SIM card so you won't be able to access specific apps that require that. Skype calling also failed to work so I had to rely on my computer and hotel wi-fi to make any calls.
Outside of the small cons above the rest of the pros more than make up for it and I highly recommend these SIM cards for anyone going to Japan!"
