"I bought a new Lenovo Thinkpad T500 in Aug 2009. However, at that time, I did not know how to set the battery parameters to prolong the battery life. This fall (2011), the battery was no longer keeping an adequate charge, so I searched the Internet for a replacement battery. I found numerous sellers on Ebay, in Hong-Kong, etc.. Prices ranged from $30 (Ebay) to $150 from Lenovo. No way to tell the quality of the battery or how long it would last. Buying from the USA and having it delivered via UPS or FedEx means I could get hit with additional charges from them for duty, handling, customs clearance, etc. .Chatting with some suppliers led to a dead-end since they did not have my battery in stock. And numerous suppliers listed the T400 but not my T500.
I put the research on hold for a while and when I resumed, Ebay sellers were no longer listed. But in doing a Google search for batteries, I saw a Google ad for LapTopCharge and investigated. Finally, a Canadian site with clear instructions and different models of battery for the T500. Further Googling in Lenovo forums indicated that DR.Battery was a site that was recommended. And it helped to read a review by a Lenovo user mentioning that batteries from Dr. Battery would work with the Lenovo software where you can specify to only start charging the battery at a specific % (say 5%) and stop charging at say 90%. This is way better than using up a battery cycle every time you plug the computer back in after using the battery alone.
So I chose the 6-cell 3-year warranty battery for $70 from the Green Series. I could have chosen the 2-year Warranty for $10 less. The price was right and free shipping was included. I ordered via Internet on Sunday night and the battery was delivered to my door via FedEx from Richmond BC to Montreal before noon on Tuesday. Talk about quick, efficient delivery. Ordering on the site was a snap, with no fuss.
Upon receipt, I checked my new battery carefully against the original OEM from Lenovo. Everything seemed identical, except for the small latch that locks the battery to the notebook. On the OEM, putting in the battery is very easy and the latch easily snaps the battery tight. On the replacement battery, it is not as smooth and you have to push the snap into place for the battery to be held properly. Just a minor annoyance, but it is worth mentioning.
Unfortunately, there were no instructions on what to do with this new battery. So I just assumed it had to be recharged overnight, but I don’t know if it is recommended to discharge completely and recharge a few times with this new “green“ technology. Instructions would have been appreciated or at least a link to some instructions on the Web site.
The only thing that I have not been able to check before completing this review is whether the battery works well with the Lenovo battery software that I mentioned before. But with the 3-year warranty, I feel confident.
I will definitely recommend these batteries to friends, even IT technicians who had told me to look on Ebay for replacement, since they did not know of any battery site they would recommend. I can now tell them I know one !
