"As I had recently purchased an Island GMT World Time automatic, I had no intention of buying another watch, however when I saw the Damasko DC96 on Island Watch’s latest newsletter, I was intrigued enough to check it out on the website. I had never had much interest in the Damasko line because their typical style didn’t appeal to me, but this particular one was different. I didn’t own a mechanical chronograph and the center minute and second hand counter features were also interesting. I’ve also always thought it would be nice to own a watch made with an in-house movement.

Although I knew Damasko had a good reputation in the watch enthusiast community, I did some research on the company and I was very impressed with what I learned. They seem committed to making high quality watches at a reasonable price point. That being said, this is on the high side of what I would typically spend on a watch so I had a number of questions which were answered both quickly and thoroughly before I made the decision to make the purchase. I honestly do not believe that I would have been able to get the same level of personal before-sale support from most on-line dealers.

I received my DC96 in perfect condition without delay after ordering, and it looks much nicer on my wrist than in the photos on line. The contrast of the polished bezel with the bead blasted case is more pronounced and I very much like the effect. Also, the blue of the dial is brilliant and the pattern that the light makes when it reflects off of the sub dials is absolutely gorgeous. The date window in between the four and five hour markers is very unobtrusive and doesn’t stand out at all.

The strap is 119mm and it’s very comfortable. It’s made of blue alligator embossed leather with a signed and polished silver butterfly clasp. The lume on the hour markers, minute and second hand counters seems adequate. Damasko uses patented technologies in both the screw-down crown and chronograph pushers to provide longer service life and enhanced water resistance.

Reading elapsed time with the center minute hand counter is ridiculously easy compared to trying to read the sub-dial on my Citizen World Chronograph A-T. The DC96’s accuracy has been phenomenal so far as it has been averaging less than -1 second/day. This may be related to Damasko’s use of a silicon escape wheel in their C51-6 movement. Overall, the DC96 is a very solid center minutes chronograph that has very good looks and is rugged enough for daily wear, which is what I plan for mine. When you couple that with the value and service provided by Island Watch, it’s a great experience.
