"My quest for a great Home Theater Receiver started with a look at the receiver reviews in Home Theater and other HT magazines. Then a good search on the internet for reviews of equipment and of the makers of the gear. I also wanted to know how all of this would work with a Samsung Smart TV, an OPPO 95 Universal Player, B&W Speakers, Two Turntables (with a tube phono preamplifier... some old school), and various Internet Streaming Sources. And to confuse the issue even more, the ownership of several quality high power amplifiers.

The initial thinking was to look at Home Theater Processors rather than a receiver. After thinking about this option I knew that what ever receiver was selected, it must have preamp outs consistent with the over configuration of the system. What I found was that in most cases the incremental price difference between the HT processors and HT receivers was not worth the over all cost of the system. Yes I do believe that at the next price point or level this would have been an option but we are talking about an out of pocket price point difference of nearly $4000, and maybe more. (and I already own the TV, speakers and at least two channels of power amps, and much of the needed cables/wires).

So the hunt was on for a HT Receiver. The field got narrowed down quickly to Marantz, Denon, Onkyo and a few other options. Then the question was what model? And what basic list price (taking into account the discounts out there).

This led to the down loading of at least 6 or 7 full user manuals. Frankly each of the user manuals were not clear as to what the actual unit would do. This resulted in phone calls to four manufacters customer help centers. The answers from these centers was mixed depending on the nature of the question. Every thing from how or what happens when the receiver is used with several preamp outs to amps with the rest of the receiver amps still hooked up, to how wireless internet functions worked or did not work with what media sources, to how HD radio worked, to how streaming video worked, tohow or what would happen if many of the Smart TV function were added into the mix, plus what happens when a high level universal player is added into the mix.

This led to a narrowing down to three Onkyo units, the TX-NR809, TX-NR1009, and TX-NR3009. And more calls and visits to sellers of Home Theater equipment.

OneCall was the only seller that not only answered my questions (and some of them were the same ones that I had asked the manufacturs about plus some more) but also provided much additional information that I could consider. This did delay the final purchase maybe 48 hours while this information was added into the decision matrix but it also I think resulted in a better decision in the end.

I purchased an Onkyo TX-NR1009 HT Receiver.

In the end because of the support that I got from OneCall not only about the various units and how they worked, but on what I think will be positive support after the purchase if needed. This final point has not yet been tested but so far so good.

Also OneCall was very competitive on price for the unit purchased. With the internet I had many other price options, shipping options, etc; yet OneCall was within $50 of the lowest price (which was also from OneCall), and several hundred dollars cheaper than the rest of the competition. And that took into account Open Box, Factory Refurbished, and other units that could be sourced from Amazon, Ebay, Audiogon and a number of other sources.

The second part of this review will take place after the unit arrives and has been initially setup. So do not read the zero ratings as a negative just not yet rated. The ratings are for the information provided in the research process, customer service, and the speed on which I got a positve shipping tracking report."
