Regarding the rating of what we bought ... We have been reasonably pleased with the "little guy" (as we call the Polaris 9300xi) as well.

On the plus side: 1) THE CANISTER! Even with other problems (see below) we will probably hang on to the little guy for that feature alone. The canister is SO easy to clean out -- no muss, no fuss -- and is a way better than average receptacle for everything from leaves to fine silt. 2) The fact that it is self contained. It is really handy to be able to just plunk it in the pool and turn it on … no hoses to mess with. 3) Its coverage of pool walls. It does a very nice job climbing walls and of scooting around sideways around the edge of the pool to clean the top bits. 4) Remote control. It is nice to be able to stand on the edge of the pool, remote control in hand, and send it after a leaf that got missed.

On the other hand: 1) The remote control isn't as useful as it could be. The little guy is very sluggish to respond to the remote control and seems to be fighting the signal. 2) It gets stuck between the edge of our moveable pool stairs and the pool wall. I am pretty sure that this is a design defect in the pool stairs but it still means that you can't just plop the little guy in and go run errands. 3) Its brain isn't very sophisticated. I keep fantasizing that there should be a setting that would allow the little guy to 3-dimensionally "map" the pool the first time it is used so that, from that point on, it could methodically clean the whole pool each time instead of (as sometimes happens) going over some spots five times and missing other spots entirely.

Bottom line: For us, the pros outnumber the cons. "
