I looked at the big boys like Dell and Alienware (now owned by Dell) but after hearing nightmare stories about Alienware (the last one from a movie set last week where a guy had one of their laptops and was miserable; I decided to go with Puget. I'll buy another one from them and probably a laptop too. They answer the phone in real time, are helpful, speaka da English and know their stuff.

After a nasty, $2k HP laptop (Pavilion 8000d) which finally self destructed after only two years (overheating?) I'm sticking with smaller, boutique shops like Puget. You won't be sorry - I wasn't.

"Puget definitely deserves its fantastic rating here. From my first contact back in August about potentially purchasing a system from them until I finally ended up doing so in late November I had excellent, friendly communications with my sales rep. Calls were returned within an hour or two and even on a late Friday afternoon they promptly helped me deal with a shipping issue (something not their fault at all). I would most definitely recommend them to anyone.

The computer itself is very professionally built, all wires neatly kept clear of the motherboard. It has been completely stable so far and virtually silent even though I didn't specifically choose that build type."

"Puget Custom Computers gets an A+ from me! The web site is a joy to work with because the offerings are limited to selected components that reduce the hassels of incompatable pairings. Even if you want a full custom rig Puget Customs recommended parts by category makes the process rational.

Good:

Great interface for designing the computer. The process for having it built was painless. My contact, Wilson, was helpful and tolerant of my questions and special requests. Good privacy policy. Fast build time. Surprisingly excellent packaging material--they've definitely gone above-and-beyond in making sure the systems they make are protected from transit damage. System in perfect condition and fully functional on arrival. Nice documentation came with system. They've earned my confidence that they're trustworthy.

At build time, they discovered that the memory cooler could not physically fit in the system. That can't be predicted, so it's not their fault. Their response was to notify me of the problem, then ship the cooler with the system but not installed, and refund me the cost of the cooler. That is an excellent, customer-friendly response.

Bad:

By email we established a particular partitioning of the main drive, and the instructions were noted on the build instructions, but the partitioning was not done. When I pointed this out, they acknowledged the mistake and offered to help me fix it. Since I didn't need help to fix the partitioning, I don't know what kind of support they would have provided, but they did offer to help. (By the way, they also tell me that they've since added an automated check to ensure that the problem doesn't happen again.)

Based on my interactions with them, the huge body of positive reviews on this site, and gut feeling, I really think that the partitioning problem was just an unlikely chance fluke and that they would have done what it took to make it right had I needed it.

Overall:

If ResellerRatings had a finer-grained scoring system, I'd give Puget at least 4.5. In fact, Puget's responses to the memory cooler and partitioning problem were as good as I could ask for, and I seriously considered giving a 5 on that basis.

My next computer will be from Puget. I'm definitely willing to give them another chance, and I'm optimistic that this time I'll have a perfect experience."

"Puget Systems delivers a stellar product. If you're thinking of purchasing a "customizable" OEM system (whether it be Dell, Gateway, HP, or any other big name), compare the system with what you can design at Puget.

The brands that Puget features are first rate (Asus, Seasonic, OCZ, and many others), and the parts run from baseline to top of the line; you'll never get stuck with a suboptimal configuration. Your PC will scream--if that's your intention--and you'll pay less at Puget than at a big name, if you're even able to create the same system.

If persuasion didn't do the trick, then here are a few humorous observations from my order:

-packaging that, provided a bit of dry ice, would have been fit to mail an Egyptian mummy
-a handy little packet detailing manufacturer information for all your parts, a quality control log, and benchmarking results
-all of the manuals and software that come with each of your parts (you know, the things that mysteriously disappear when you normally buy a prebuilt PC!)
-a fun little Puget adhesive that you can slap on the front of your PC
