Shopping around by 1st filtering out anything that wasn't a used Agilent, HP, or Tektronix for a digital scope came up with only a handful of hi-priced obsolete digitals with few functions and fewer options. I also went on several forums to find out what other people buy and the names Owon, Siglent, GWinstek came up along with Rigol. I did some feature and price comparisons online and found that for a 4channel scope the 1054z could not be beat. Features on this instrument challenged even the well-known brands and did so for hundreds less. Great bang for your buck!
Although I never had a DSO, I could figure out the basic scope functions in a short time. Features like math have a dedicated button which opens a menu type selection of functions. Push-centering encoders are very handy, as is the H. split screen that magnifies part of the wave, selected by pushing the horizontal encoder. Very professional instrument, with lots of functions that wait to be explored, some known and some new to me.
Negatives: None that would make much difference to the end results for me, and would not prevent me from buying this model again if the need arrises for another.
One minor issue is the trace colors on the screen for channel 2 and 4 are very similar (much more alike than on the intro video), and i feel they could have used perhaps green on one. Could this be fixed by a firmware update?
Another is the cooling fan noise. It wont bother if you work in a somewhat noisy environment like my workplace, but I do notice the whine in the quiet of my hobby shop. If it gets too annoying I'll exchange this someday with a quieter fan. It should have been caught by QC. at the factory.
All in all, this is a super upgrade from the old 10mhz analog I was using up till now. Really happy with my purchase.
