Partial shipment

"When I called to see why my order hadn't shipped, I was informed that they only had 2 of the 4 manometers that I ordered. I was then told that they would do a partial shipment. Why wasn't I notified that they didn't have all 4 in stock and would do a partial shipment? It then took another 4 days for me to receive the product."

"The LFM led lamp is light and easy to use, movement of the arms work very well with the right amount of spring tension. Brightness and magnifier are both excellent to use. I had only one small problem, is that the table clamp that holds the lamp I found the lamp stem that fits into the clamp is smaller that make the lamp feel loose when moving up and down. It would have been a 5 star if it wasn't for the loose lamp fitting.

A suggestion: I would like to see future lamps able to be controlled by a remote power switch.

Fluke 62 MAX+

"Yes, it has the accuracy specs and the durability. But the control interface was designed by brain-dead engineers with no imagination, and the user manual is written by Chinese that know of no way to communicate with us except by ambiguous and difficult to decipher pictograms. It's a shame in a $160 instrument from Fluke to have such a clumsy interface and childish user manual.

The SET button is just an option "Change" button (On/OFF), and is not used to enter the settings display mode. That's done with the SEL button, but it starts by cycling all the way through the value displays of Max, Min, Avg, and Diff; and then continues through the setting options for Lite OFF/On, Laser OFF/On, Alarm HI OFF/On, Alarm Lo OFF/On, EMS, ºC/ºF, and Tr I9 OFF/On. In other words, the same button (!!!) is used to mix the more important reading displays (Max, Min, Avg, Diff) together with the less often used setting displays (Lite, Laser, Alarms, EMS, ºC/ºF, Tr I9 OFF/On). Therefore, you must use the SEL button to go through all of the choices if you need to get back to those more important displays (Max, Min, Avg, Diff). The user must cycle all the way through past the Tr I9 OFF/On setting option in order to redisplay those reading values! Even though there is room on the display, the Max, Min, Avg and Diff values are displayed truncated down to the next lowest integer (why, why, why?).

And the worst is yet to come! You feel pressured by time! - it has a short display timeout - if no key is pressed for about 5 seconds it shuts down completely and doesn't remember any of the readings or allow them to be displayed again. The manual shows some pictograms that seem to indicate that the display timeout can be set for 10 minutes - but it doesn't work (Tr I9 OFF/On).

There is no way to take a reading, wait a minute, then take another reading (and then see the Max, Min, Avg and Diff). The readings must be done "all at once" and "all in one scan" (while holding the main trigger). After that you must move quickly to analyze the results (5 secs). After the unit shuts down it powers up only by the main trigger, at the top of the SEL menu button order showing "Max" - it doesn't remember how the user last used it, and the readings that were there from before powering itself off are gone.

To add foul smelling frosting to the cake, the up and down arrow keys aren't used for anything except setting numbers for the high/low alarms and the EMS (the things most people don't always need). The arrow keys would have been a great choice for cycling through the Max, Min, Avg and Diff values (removing those from the SEL button which could then be labeled "Settings"). The arrows would also have been a great choice for toggling the setting options (OFF/On). Left to right they could have had buttons "Max/Min/Avg/Diff" (or "VALues"), "Up/Down arrows" and "Settings" (or "SETtings"). No, don't make sensible design choices, that would make the instrument too easy to learn and use!

If the design engineers had not chosen to mix different functions on the same buttons I would have given this instrument a 5/5 Star Rating. But the main trigger always starts a reading AND starts with all new values, and the SEL button is for displaying values AND changing the settings. None of the user panel buttons can be used to turn on the display and examine the previous readings (you must use the main trigger which initiates a new set of data collection). So the device is crippled by confused design engineering choices.

Unfortunately, I remember the days when "Fluke" was a name synonomous with high quality design engineering including the human interface choices. I guess those days are gone forever, as this design is several years old now and Fluke has done nothing to correct the shortcomings.
