"I wish I'd read the other reviews: the quality control is incredibly bad and their advertising is misleading. I purchased "like new" books that were littered in notes, with whole passages so edited that I could not read them. Other books marked "acceptable" were actually relatively unmarked and in good condition. The short of it: look for other used book retailers or find a brick-and-mortar place in your community--Thrift Books cannot be trusted and they sell books marked "like new" that would probably be labeled "acceptable" by other stores. "
"I no longer recommend. Be very careful what you purchase. I bought something clearly titled, on their Thriftbooks page, as an Oracle deck with 44 cards and a 320 page guidebook. Listed in "Good condition" and shown with an image of the entire boxed set.
I was sent *just* the guidebook. When I asked why, I was told by Dane at customer service that there are *no guarantees* that accessories will be received because these are used items.
Then he told me they were no others in stock, so I could not receive the item I ordered.
There were still 8 in stock per their website. The item in question, the title of it is uses the term "CARDS" so, not an accessory, but the actual item. He did not answer why he chose to lie about there being none in stock when 8 were listed.
If you can not trust that you will get the item pictured, the item listed, and the item described because they are used, then what is the point of shopping here?
I've spent hundreds of dollars at this site, but I will no longer use them.
Good Condition-is not the appropriate listing for this item when missing an key essential component-poor or fair.
What I was sent doesn't even have a UPC on it because it was never met to be sold alone-it is part of a set.
The day before I received half of my order and told, that's the way it is with used goods...I ordered another book, listed in stock and received an immediate response, "This item is not in stock."...Thriftbooks is not as great as it once was and customer service is terrible. Don't bother."
"Don't buy from these guys especially through eBay. I paid and they did not send my book. EBay will not help after 90 days. ThriftBooks still state they have the book in stock on their website, but refuse to fix the problem saying it has to go through eBay. They have my money but are not ethical enough to send the book. Some people were lucky to get defective books when they paid - I received nothing and they will not support their customers."
"I am totally disappointed with my purchase. The book I purchased was advertised as "used-acceptable". I'd like to know who would find this falling apart book acceptable. The garbage dump???
I know this book is used, but, seriously? It's falling apart.
I'll have to tape it together so the falling apart doesn't go any further.
Ridiculous!!!"
"Thrift books company is unable to cancel an order only mere hours after being placed, on a Saturday afternoon, bc “shipping process has begun.” Why are you unable to stop the process?? Why even have a canceling request option? I could understand if it was already at the post office, but shipping an order out anyway AFTER A CANCELLATION REQUEST is insane. Pure laziness and lack
of cooperation. My order shipped out Monday. I’m told I will have to wait as late as JANUARY 27 for these overpriced books to arrive to finally be able to return, with me paying return shipping. Very bad for business. I found these two books less than half price with a 5 day delivery guaranteed elsewhere. I WILL NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY AGAIN and be sure to spread the word far and wide how poorly this company did business with me. I am a LIBRARIAN btw, ordering books is my business. "
"Took forever to understand that I wanted a receipt emailed to me, and when I got my order there was a coffee stained cover .
If someone is going to promote selling used books at least do an efficient job at having good products.
Thrift books.com is not good . "
"horrible!!
- prices fluctuate significantly (items i had in the cart got significantly more expensive when left there for a few hours).
- items not as described
- customer service poor - i was told to return a item for a 'full refund' (when not as described) even though i live overseas & the shipping cost makes it an impossibility. i'm appalled that any thinking person would even suggest it!
when offered a refund for a book that was not at all as described, i was offered 15%(??) - practically EVERY decent seller/site is fine to take full responsibility & compensate with a FULL refund without the joke of 'returning the item'
- items arrive late (so their delivery estimates even during the covid situation are STILL inaccurate/flawed, but as a CUSTOMER, you're expected to be understanding & supportive of THEM(??)
not impressed at all & would NOT recommend to ANYONE.
want a better option? go with powells books - their customer service standards are MUCH better as are the conditions of their books (which are nearly always BETTER than what they're listed as).

"Do not waste your time or money if buying new books. Bought 3 “new” books that all came in terrible condition. If I want to return, I have to pay for shipping. I think they hope most people won’t go through the hassle. They have the bait and switch down at thriftbooks!"
"I purchased a book using the website thriftbooks.com. I expected the book to be used - reading marks, notes, bent pages that sort of thing. I was excited when the book arrived! "The Berry Grower's Companion" From the moment I opened the package I could smell heavy cigarette smoke. I gagged immediately. I cannot use the book with a horrible smell. I contacted Thriftbooks and was told they do not inspect for smell and don't refund shipping. I had used them in the past. I will never use them again! I recommend you run!"
"I ordered a book. I never received any shipping tracking number. I got refund in my card after few days. I pinged them to see what's going on. They said they canceled my order because they thought it was suspected as fraud order. Then I checked the same book in their website and it showed out of stock. I think this book was never in stock. The fact that it showed out of stock right after they refunded means, either it was never in stock. This is so unprofessional. I hope this website is not a scam website just to steal our credit card information. Be careful guys. Even if this website is not a scam, then they are not professional. The show the books that are not in stock as available. So unprofessional and frustration. "
"Notifiied CS as per their policy that a book pre Pandemic in March that I ordered did not arrive. I have screen shot of Fedex tracking indicating it did NOT leave the country. They are refusing to refund. Natasha CS rep sends me an email stating I need to file a dispute with my Credit card company. I also did not recieve a book I ordered Oct 31/19 and again Natasha, CS states I needed to tell them within a 30 day period to get a refund. I did email them within that time frame.
Again, I have a screen shot of Fedex tracking that indicates Zero items not recieved by Fedex to be shipped. This company is a nightmare to deal with they take your money and then do not ship your book. Worst company Customer service wise I have ever had to deal with. Update to Trustpilot, TB replied, but it is a robot message that just keeps sending me a link to their website to fill out complaint form. I have filled out the form 9 times now for both books. It's a little game they play that does NOTHING. It just makes them seem even more like fraudsters. I have filed a complaint with the BBB and have a file # that an action will be filed with Thrift books."
" It was missing 21 pages and written in on almost all pages. The website classified it as good quality.
I will never buy from them again."
"Thrift is a THIEF! Ordered 4 books. All sent from different locations. All were not the same as the photo in the listing. I requested a refund on the first one - then as the other three arrived I realized 2 of the 3 remaining were defective. THEY WILL NOT HELP OR RESPOND!
BUYER BEWARE! THESE PEOPLE ARE THIEVES!
"
"I was thrilled when I found ThriftBooks but have had two horrible experiences and will never use them again.
The first order I made, I found it necessary to return several books. ThriftBooks does not have a return policy posted anywhere. You must email them. Although I continued to ask questions, customer service representatives kept repeating the same vague policy. I finally mailed the books, but ThriftBooks lost them and I had to email multiple times before I received my refund.
The second time, I ordered copies of "The Inferno" that clearly stated that they were translated by Dorothy Sayers. I received six different copies all by different translators. ThriftBooks kept making excuses and refused to refund the money or replace the books.
I AM SADLY DISAPPOINTED and I will never buy from ThriftBooks again. DO NOT BUY FROM THRIFTBOOKS!
"
"Wish I would have read the reviews before I ordered from this company. The book I received is the title of the book I ordered but not the actual book and I paid over $27.00 for the book. When it arrived, the actual Thriftbooks price tag on the book was $3.49. I had emailed Yolanda at Thriftbooks about this and sent pictures of the book with the price tag on it but never received anything back from her. Then, I called and spoke with Natasha and gave her the whole spill and she told me that they didn’t have any other copies of the book to replace mine with and that I could return the book but that I would be responsible for shipping costs. As for the price tag on the book, she said that they buy some of the books at places such as goodwill and resale them at value and that the price tag on the book was probably from where they had purchased the book, but the price sticker clearly states “Thriftbooks”. I responded to their survey request but of course, nothing from this company. I do not advise buying from Thriftbooks. They are a rip off. "
