"I have a hit-and-miss relationship with AltRider. I find its products are amongst the most innovatively and functionally designed products on the market, at least for the R1200GS I ride. I can recall three products I have bought from AltRider. The first was a set of crash bars for my R1200GS. Perfect fit. I loved them. Served me well when I dropped my motorcycle and bent them. AltRider did well on me by sending me a replacement set at a 35% discount in the spring of 2014.

When I went to install them, the upper bolt that slips through the frame and joins the two pieces together didn't fit! Upon closer inspection, the flange on the bolt was too large a diameter to fit through the hole it was intended to. Like, wtf? Really? Did they even look at the bolts they were shipping with the bars? Luckily I had an angle grinder to grind down the flange and get it to work.

So fast forward to June, 2015. I’ve been drooling over the AltRider Luggage System (both a rear rack and rack replacement for the pillion seat). But that system is crazy expensive - $400! But after a year or more of drooling, I decide to spring for it. What sold me on it? It has an optional Monokey mounting kit for Givi luggage.The mounting kit is advertised on the AltRider website as “Fits all Givi Monokey compatible Top Cases”. I know I’ve needed a trunk for a long time, and decided I’d better get one before I get stuff swiped off my bike in San Francisco but some dirty homeless person looking for a quick crack fix. I’ve had a Givi Monokey E360 before and was impressed, so the combination of two leading products sold me on it. Not to mention that AltRider also conveniently pre-drilled the racks to hold a RotoPax mount. That’s the cat’s ass. A few keystrokes later and I was down over $400.

It arrived and installed as promised. Almost a perfect fit, but close enough given the tolerances they were working with in design. Now for the Givi trunk. What to buy, what to buy? Such a selection. So I order up the 47L Tech top case. I install the Monokey mounting kit I bought from AltRider on my AltRider rack.

Well, I try to install the 47L Tech top case onto my may rack and…wtf? It doesn’t fit!!! The 47L Tech top case has bottom with a slightly recessed impression that is intended to fit the Givi racks. Well, the AltRider rack is TOO WIDE to fit in the impression, so the mounts when installed with their included parts do extend high enough from the lockably engaging connectors (sorry – I was a patent agent at one point in my life). Clear the folks at AltRider never tested this combination because any fool would have reached the same conclusion. The two connectors need to ended higher off the rack.

So there you have it – AltRider has some neat and beautifully designed and manufactured products, but they occasionally fall flat on delivering the trouble- and frustration-free end use experience. Oh how I want to love AltRider, but I get spurned so much by the company. So I don't know what to do now. Return the rack? Return the Givi luggage? Or attempt to gerry-rig the Monokey mounting system to actually work as designed?

"I had a happy-trails skid plate from an older KLR that was never installed. I began to put it on my newer model KLR and did not like the weight (KLR is plenty heavy to begin with). I was not impressed with their mounting brackets or U bolt clams system.
I paid more for the Altrider and am very happy I did. It is lighter, looks great, and installation was very easy. "

The not so good is, you need someone to read and spell check the informational and instructional material sent with your product. Also your black and white photos in the instructions are poor quality. Color would show more detail.
An instructional video how to install your different products would be nice, and I'm sure would give people who are not so mechanically inclined more confidence."
