"First, I should note that while I am a computer technician (Dell, Inc.), this purchase was for home use. I needed some added HD capacity to recover data from a bunged Windows partition.
I purchased an UltraStar HD, FedEx overnighted it, and it was here in less than 18 hrs! That was great. I didn't have a chance to install it for a week, and when I did - dead. No spinup. Not knowing if I needed to contact the supplier or the manufacturer, I tried the manufacturer. I was informed 3 days later that I would have to go through the supplier: GMI.
OK. No problem. I went to the website and filled out the form. I got the RMA 2 days later. Overnighted it back and waited. After a week I tried to contact the RMA dept. at GMI. - I should note here that I work the evening shift. - That, along with the fact that I'm in the Central timezone and GMI is in the Western zone didn't exactly make contacting GMI easy. After leaving a couple of voice mails (another week or two), I gathered the discipline to get up early enough to contact Juan Valdez (RMA exec.).
No problem. He said that I had waited long enough, but they didn't have an exact replacement, so would I mind trading up? SO....instead of a 7200 rpm. SCSI 3 HD, I ended up with a 15,000 rpm SCSI 3 HD!! It works perfectly too.
I would recommend these guys to anyone. I would also recommend that people keep in mind when dealing with web firms, that the place they are dealing with is not just down the road. Patience will get you satisfaction. If you want speed, PAY FOR IT, and go down the road to your local dealer.

"Purchased two Thinkpad 600 laptop batteries from this company in May of 2003.
When the batteries arrived they were both obviously used. The batteries had dings and scratches and one had a sticker that said "Tested - Low Capacity." The batteries were not marked as used or refurbished in any way on the website (other than the fact these specific batteries were not marked "new" while some other products were) and the company website does not specify that they are selling used parts. As a result, I decided to return the batteries.
Update 6/9/2003: I have been in contact with GMI and they offered to replace the batteries with new ones. Apparently there was an error when the order was drop shipped. Stay tuned...
Update 7/13/2003: I decided to keep the secondary drive bay battery I purchased because it's performance was acceptable (although not as good as a new battery) and because IBM discontinued that particular battery so a new one might be hard to find. I returned the primary battery, which only got about an hour of runtime, to GMI for a replacement. About a week later, Drake from GMI contacted me to say that they were unable to obtain a new battery from their suppliers and they would refund what I had paid for both batteries even though I had returned only one of them. The representatives from GMI were very friendly and were eager to make things right with my order."

"My experience with purchasing two hard drives from Global Micro Inc. was outstanding. The ironic thing about this is that I later returned the hard drives. Part of our mission here at Onizuka Air Force Station is to record data for Space Shuttle missions. When the STS-107 disaster occured, we were given direction to remove the hard drives from the system, a standard practice when the NASA contingency plan is activated. We researched replacement hard drives and ordered them from GMI. They arrived as advertised, however we did not have the propietary software to install and load them. We were held in limbo for a few weeks and then new hard drives arrived from the east coast which already had everything loaded. Now we were stuck with these new hard drives from GMI and the 30 day return date had come and gone. I telephoned GMI and spoke to Juan and explained our situation. He made a quick call to GMI management and the 30 day return policy was waved. This is not a company out to make a quick sale, but rather one focused on the customer. I look forward to doing business with GMI in the future."

"I had some older scsi drives that needed to be replaced. GMI had a really great price on the replacements. After placing my order, a sales representitive called and informed me that they had just run out of stock. That they were willing to sell me the same quantity of larger capacity, drives and adapters (to make them work) for the original price of my order. I received the order on time but soon discovered that most of the drives had bad sectors on them. I received an RMA for the defective units through their website. I called about the RMA later, after I didn't get anything in the mail. They informed me that they had received the defective units but that they would be unable to replace them. Upon calling I was promptly given a refund for the non-replaceable items. They have VERY good prices but I would have paid a bit more if I knew that the drives had been tested prior to shipment. Overall, however, GMI was a good company to do buisness with. Customer service was nice, friendly, and prompt with good solutions.
