"The material and the content was very well put together. I have not taken the proctored exam yet, but If I do have the time to study the material given will help me pass. The only discouraging thing is the amount of information that has no relation to the demographics of where I am from. Half of the content does not pertain to what we will be dealing with as Captains here in Hawaii. No fog, no navigation in a narrow canal, etc. The proctored exam should instead be a course that teaches captains specifics about their area of demographical operation. Also, I strongly believe that someone's experience and common sense should be a big part of passing the proctored exam. I'm not a good test taker, but I am confident in my skills and knowledge as a Captain. Anyone can study and pass a written exam, but not everyone can just drive a boat no matter how well they did on a written exam. For basic knowledge and understanding I feel the proctored exam is necessary, but to pay all that money, everyone should pass as long as the comprehend and understand the material. The focus should be on the sea time and who does that Captain learn to be a Captain from. They should be required after passing the proctored exam to put in Sea Time with a certified captain with a minimum experience of 20 years in that particular area of the world. "
"Some of the lectures and video's were pretty vague, so I had trouble finding answers to questions. Seems there should be color charts that show buoys, lights, sound signals and etc., to make it easier to become familiar with. We will see tomorrow when I do the proctored exam."

"I used MLS for my 100 Ton Near Coastal Masters license, with Sailing Endorsement, and for my Marine Radio Operators Permit. In both cases, I did very well on the final tests - a reflection of the course materials as much as my own efforts. The things I'd like to see MS do better are: (1) Cover all the required material in both lecture, reading, rather than leaving some parts covered only in lecture, reading or video. (2) Be more comprehensive in the coaching for submitting applications. For both my 100 T and my MROP I had to spend a lot of time figuring out how to complete the application process after finishing the courses."

"The study outline for the MROP is very clear and had great videos for demonstration. The practice exams cover the information in the study outline and gives unlimited opportunity to practice the information. The final exam covered the same information in the study outline. "I tried to study for the exam with just a book off of Amazon. That book was good, but it was missing some key details and it made taking the practice exams difficult. You have to score a 90% on the exam (rules of the road portion) so that means you can miss 3 questions. If the book is missing some info you margin for error is too low.
With this system you read, watch a video and then read it again. You are then tested on only that portion of information. This really allows the info to sink in and you get immediate feedback on whether you are learning or not.
I think the best part is that when you are done you are not taking the Coast Guard exam, you are taking the MLS exam. This exam should be more representative of what you are learning and be closer aligned to the practice exams you have taken."
