"In March 2020, owner Shawn fired many senior employees with no notice or benefits, including managers who were with the company over 15 years. He pretended that he had no choice as a result of Covid rules but it was really a planned restructuring to increase profit. Employees were given no notice and escorted out of the building like criminals instead of people who helped build the company with their sweat and blood. That's how much this company values it's employees. Dozens of dedicated people have been fired so far and the remaining employees live in fear of losing their jobs and health insurance at any moment. For a company that talks about social justice so much, they sure don't have much respect for their employees."
"I had an issue in which UPS lost my package. This was right as the current pandemic was going down and the company was being swamped with orders. I tried to wait it out in hopes the package would be found so that I didn't have to contact them during this rough time, but the package was at a complete stand still. I was given a quick response and a new package was shipped to me with 2nd day air. Although the issue was not on Mountain Rose Herbs part, they did totally right by me and I appreciate it so much. "
"I worked for them for over 3 years, so I had an opportunity to look at them from the inside. And here is what I can tell:
1. Most products are more or less decent, however the people who clean, cut, package, etc. those products are often unprofessional and with low level of integrity (especially at their Mill), so when you buy their herbs and spices, do keep in mind that they might have been touched by someone not wearing gloves, or they might have been picked up from a dirty floor and put into bags, etc.
2. They did lay off 20% of employees on March 30. The official version is that this was done because of the pandemic, but they laid off some people who worked from home at that time, so pandemic is just a cover. Actually they started firing people back in February, because it turned out that their poor management led the company to a financial crisis, and in January they were very close to be unable to pay salaries to everyone.
3. The way they treat their employees is just incredibly mean. For example, the way they handled the lay off was the following: one day, while you are working, they suddenly block your access to your account, call you in 15 minutes, and tell you to leave, like you are some sort of criminal. Or they just put your things in a box, in the evening when you left work, and in the morning you come and find an empty desk. Here is what you get for all the years of hard work! The higher management protects those whom they consider their friends, even if they are absolutely unprofessional and dishonest. So, they kept all of their friends and got rid of everyone else.
So, you can, of course, continue buying their products, but remember that their motto “people, plants, and planet over profit” is not true, because what they care about is their own profit. They are very good though in creating an illusion of them caring about their employees and customers. That is one thing they do well - pretending. "

"I used to order a lot from Mountain Rose Herbs over the years but I noticed that they've been really bad about hiking up shipping costs to where you need to re-evaluate if their products really are competitively priced (often they're not), and many times it takes them about a month to ship my order out to me. If I email them to ask for an update, the first thing they do is quote their policy that they don't guarantee shipping time but won't help check the status of an order sitting in their warehouse for weeks on end. Then if you want to cancel so you're not charged on an order that has no shipment date in sight after a month, they'll tell you that you can only cancel within hours of placing the order. WHAT IS THIS?! This company really needs to rethink how they're running the business and if this is how they want to be treated."
