"BUYER BEWARE! We bought the platinum coverage policy when we closed on a home purchase and 4 months later our air conditioning stopped working. We live in Phoenix, AZ so not having a/c is a real problem. We called the warranty company and they had someone out the next morning. We were told it was going to cost $1600.00 to fix it. We asked would it be covered and were told they submit the paperwork to the warranty company and it takes 3-4 days to get their approval or denial. We called the warranty company, had them look up our policy and asked if this would be covered through them. We were told they couldn't discuss it with us until the claim had been turned in. We told Select Home Warranty the motor had to be replaced, could they tell us if that would be covered and they wouldn't discuss it. We asked if they could tell us anything that would help us to know how this works? We were told we would have to wait for them to review the claim. So we looked on their website and under terms and conditions 6.3.6 it listed the motor as one of the things it covers as long as it does not exceed a 5 ton capacity. Because of this, we thought we should get most of the money back, if not all back. With the heat here reaching over 100, we went ahead and paid for the repairs and whatever the home warranty covered would be reimbursed directly back to us. We were told this is very common practice with home warranties. A few days later we received an email asking us to send pictures of our a/c unit which we did that day. A few more days went by and we received in a check in the mail for $50.00 saying that was our maximum allowed amount. When we called the company, they said we needed 3 years of maintenance records on a/c units for them to cover more. We said we just bought the home 4 months ago, why didn't they tell us that when we called? If we would've been told this, we could have shopped around for a much better price. We asked why would you not tell people buying the platinum plan for a home they are buying that they wouldn’t be covered w/o maintenance records? Select Home Warranty said this information is in the welcome packet we mailed you. We said the welcome packet we got AFTER we purchased your platinum plan? They said yes. Why wouldn’t you just put that on your website or tell the homeowner when they call? That seems very dishonest and misleading to portray you cover items, when you really don’t. They asked if we could contact the previous owner and we did try and were unsuccessful and said all we have is the home inspection report from our purchase which found the a/c to be working correctly.
We talked to several people at Select Home Warranty each time supposedly going higher up, asking why we weren’t told this up front. We just kept getting the same answer, it was in the packet we mailed to you. Remember it’s the packet they mail AFTER you purchase their warranty. We were left being told that they would try to get us more money and would get back to us in 10 working days. It’s been over 20 and we haven’t heard back from anyone and don’t expect to. This is a very dishonest company. Why not be honest and upfront and put this policy in a clear easy to find place on your website and tell people who call with a/c problems what will be required for coverage. We will not be going with this company again and we tell everyone we can not to either.
