"I bought a used iPhone to replace a phone I had a lost. Speed was important. I paid for it on Paypal. Two business days (4 calendar days) later, I get an e-mail with no subject from BlueDot saying that they were "proactively" telling me that because of fraud concerns for purchases over $400, I need to forward them a photocopy of my driver's license over e-mail; if I don't respond, the purchase would be canceled and the money would be refunded. Here's my issue:
1. There's nothing proactive about this communication. Being proactive means telling me about this policy before I commit to buying and paying for it.
2. Did they have to wait so long to tell me? That's no proactive.
3. Their method of communication (an e-mail with no subject) was poor. It could have ended up in my SPAM box. I could have accidentally deleted it. And how do I know that it's not a "phishing" scam?
4. I left two phone messages and two e-mail twice that day, asking them to contact me--I wasn't going to follow the instructions of suspicious e-mail. I didn't get a call back until the next day, the third business day after the initial order.
5. Their calling hours are 9-5PM (eastern)--not very convenient for those in Pacific. [The website claim they serve 500 customers a day. I find that hard to believe if they have 8 working hours/day only 5/days week.]
To their credit, the guy I talked to was polite (though not very empathetic) and gave me a refund that day. Perhaps I'm being overly cautious, but I don't feel comfortable sending photocopies of my driver's license over the internet. In all my online shopping, which has included much larger ticket items, that has never been the protocol. I understand their need to reduce fraud, but this is a poor way of addressing it."
