"Thredup is a scam. They steal clothes with resale value out from under people. If you send a high value flawless item they’ll claim to not have received it or be vague about it not meeting their high standards. I’m a 5 star reseller on many platforms and know how to evaluate items. I’ve never had an issue with other resell sites. Thredup are liars and thieves."
"I've been looking into rental or subscription services for styling and there are so many out there i'd figured I'd try a low cost option to see if its something I like. Thred up seemed like a great fit, I love thrifted clothes and their style quiz was really in depth. Felt like they really understood my style. after that, things went downhill fast.
1. there is absolutely no communication. No idea when my goodie box is getting picked/can't take things out of my box before it ships based on look of stuff. no notification that it shipped. it also took like 3 weeks to arrive, and then I had to return within 7 days - 4 of which were a long weekend over a holiday and no mail service.
2. they literally do not pay the slightest attention to that really in depth quiz, so what's the point? The first box miraculously had a few items I thought were cute, but they weren't in my size at all. (even though they ask a bunch of size questions, they just pick things out at random) so big disappointment. I had literally picked "avoid ruffles" and "avoid pink" and 3 items were pink, and one big ruffly dress.
3. I was able to leave reviews on all the items since I sent everything back. decided to do a 2nd box to see if it would improve any with the added feed back. the 2nd box was way way worse. Again hardly anything in my actual size. And basically everything else except for one shirt were some of the ugliest clothes ive ever seen.
4. the pricing. look - I know its 2nd hand stuff, and re selling but these prices are a bit outrageous for the quality of stuff. I mean why would I pay $20 for exercise pants with stains on them when I can get new ones for the same or less?
it really surprises me that I'd considered this experience such a waste of money when I'm only out $20. but it was way more of a hassle, not fun and absolutely not helpful. I'd stay away from these goodie boxes at all costs. and honestly I'll probably never shop at thredup just based on this experience. "
"The clothes smell of chemicals and cigarette smoke , it's disgusting and it is the same sickening smell in all 8 pieces I purchased. I have soaked them in vinegar, then baking soda, washed them twice and I CAN STILL SMELL IT. I don't know what they use, but it's gross and has turned me off completely. Will shop local thrift and consignment stores instead. "
"Yes, I was another victim of ThredUP's so-called "save the environment" tactics. I sent in a bag of designer clothes, only to have 5 items selected to sell on their site. Their catch is the return policy. When an item is sold, you have to wait for 15 days to receive any kind of payout. But, I have discovered that 2 of my items went past the 15-day policy, only to show up again on their listings. I've worked in retail to be well aware of people who purchase an item to wear on a special occasion, only to return it after for a full refund. Their payout wouldn't buy a cup of coffee, if they actually pay you. I would never recommend this site for anyone who is looking to sell their good items. You would be better off with a local consignment shop or even eBay. "
"ThredUp practices border on theft and fraud. After having several items of clothing and bags processed with no issues, I turned off the feature to have items shipped back that are not accepted. I sent 2 pairs of designer Italian loafers + items I bought from thredUP but had changed my mind and decided to re-sell them - and they all disappeared. No credit was given as apparently they "didn't meet standards." I attempted to contacted them and got no response. From reading other reviews and my experience, thredUP employees check which items are marked "don't ship back" - and keep desirable items for themselves and/or to sell on the side.
That was almost a year ago. A few weeks ago - against my better judgment - I bought three bags from the site. One of the bags has a broken handle. ThredUP can only be contacted by Twitter (which they didn't answer); there is no phone number and emails go unanswered. "
"I won't keep shopping here, as I came to use a gift certificate which the site failed to take, charging everything to my PayPal instead - my immediate use of various means to contact customer service got me a nice email several days later telling me it was too late for them to do anything about this - AND failing to explain what on Earth went wrong or how to avoid this on ant further attempt to send said certificate.
That said, I got some nice things for decent prices, and what didn't fit or was stained was an easy return.
Regular thrifting is easier than looking through all these images of clothes with not much description - if you've got the means to get to places, and probably works out cheaper, and you can tell what's what (click on photos to zoom in & they do, but not to a quality that differentiates most textures or clears up shine from flaws). So I prefer regular thrifting. If I hear TU gets a customer service facelift I might try it again someday."
"From a buyer's perspective, absolutely, positively do not buy used items from Thredup unless willing to take the gamble of throwing your money away along with the garbage they deceptively state in "good condition" with one or two fuzzy photos. Bought leather handbag at their usual highly exaggerated "retail" and heavily discounted price. What arrived was a filthy, worn, smelly piece of trash. What was once pebbled leather worn down to nothing, interior black with filth. Of course no return of handbags. Never again."
"Sent in a box full of handbags. Literally one year later they get to listing the contents of the box. Inside the box is a NWT Issey Miyake Bao Bao. When I contacted the company regarding 1) if the box had been completely reviewed and 2) why this specific brand new item was not listed, the chat rep gave me the equivalent of a shrug emoji.
Obviously I trusted the wrong company. I never ask for return service (paid theft insurance?) because I am trying to clean out my closet and am happy to donate things that don't sell, say nothing of the environmental cost. But the one time I send them a truly high value item that would sell immediately, it is deemed "unacceptable" and disappears? Really? That's how you do business?
I've tried to escalate the issue, but I'm not holding my breath seeing as though, well, they already stole from me. If unresolved, I'll be making it my new hobby to ensure their purse snatching enterprise costs them far more than $500."
"They have excellent selection, a wide range of brands and sizes, and are very detailed and accurate in their descriptions. I've been pleased with every piece I've ordered."
"I absolutely love ThredUp! I love the selection of Women's clothing at terrific prices! "
"easy and fst delivery, clothing very nice"
"It took a while before I received it, but very happy ! It fits really good !
Thank you "
"Learning to navigate through the Thredup site is challenging but well worth spending the time and effort to discover just the right shirt, jeans, etc. Great clothing at great prices! "
"Really love the bag.and it came sooner than expected."
"First, the good: I loved most of the clothes sent in my goody box and found the prices to be in line with what I was willing to spend. The items appeared to be brand new--some still had the tags on them.
The process definitely left much to be desired. At first, I loved the idea of having 7 days to review. As a customer of another company like ThredUp, they only allow for 3 days. Also, I loved that the box was reused for returning the unwanted items (I like the ease and environmentally-friendly option.) Unfortunately, the purchase/selection process was confusing. The instructions were not clear or in one place. I shipped the package 2 days after receipt but since there is no way to close the purchase when I send it (like the other company I mentioned.) Despite me sending the box back well within the required timeframe using their shipping label, they charged me for the full box--even though I responded to each item online to explain my perspective on the item. I have emailed them twice with proof of my shipping on time, and while they issued a "refund" it wasn't due to my communication.
It definitely left a bad taste in my mouth. ThredUP should update their process and have it mirror competitor's process."
