"ecost.com sold me an open box refurbished item. What they did not care to explain was that this item was an HP refurbished item that they sold and it subsequently returned back to ecost. It was marked as open box refurbished instead of open box and refurbished. In their system it was marked as a T1. The laptop had keyboard issues where the right side of the keyboard was making a lot of noise. Further inspection of the laptop box indicated that the laptop return was inspected on 2/27/2014 by a tech named HOP (ecost employee). I still have the picture of those labels.

I had not activated the windows software on this laptop. I noticed the issue when I tried activate the laptop, so I stopped. I called ecost to get a RMA and they told me that I need to talk to HP. Why? because "supposedly ecost does not accept returns on HP products." I called HP, got shuttled around with 3 different people and they finally told me ecost should give me a full refund, based on what I just explained. That exercise in futility took 1 plus hour on the phone.

I called ecost back on for ecost to tell me they do not issue refunds. Now it was time to play hardball.

Ecost tried to treat me a like chump. I asked them to explain to me how and why they took the item back in the first place as it was evident from all the stickers on the box. The fact they they sold this refurbished laptop and took it back and then resold it to me tells me otherwise. Of course they did not have an explanation for that.

I then made it very clear to them that I am going to the BBB and going to challenge the charge on my American Express. At which point they escalated the issue to a manager and promised they would call me back . Several hours later they called me to tell me they would "make a one time exception" and take the item back. Just to make a finer point - they were going to take this item back the 2nd time.

My dissatisfaction is from the 2-3 hours wasted with the BS and the runaround. I am never going to get that time back. Why play these games? Why treat a customer like a chump? Why make the customer fight for their rights? Why not do the right thing from the start? This is an HP refurbished item that you had already taken back. There is obviously something wrong with it. Why put it back up for sale?

"E-cost is proud to provide you the finest care and support in all your technology needs"; This line was in my email exchange with ecost. My experience tells me otherwise. I felt like ecost was playing a shell game with me. The laptop is probably going to be back on sale to another sucker, another chump - beware.
