"I purchased a Xiaomi robot vacuum as a gift during a flash sale. I paid $348.39 on 2018-11-25. At the same time I purchased spare parts for the vacuum.
I have the spare parts which arrived in a timely fashion but no vacuum. They tell me it is out of stock. The product re-stock was estimated by Gearbest at approximately January 26, 2019. So I wait. When that date rolls around, they say it is still out of stock.
At one point they tell the product is no longer available but it is still advertised on their site. I tell them, send me the newer one that uses the same filters and brushes. They tell me (conveniently) that it is also out of stock but will ship the original item when available.
They can seemingly deliver these to lots of other customers but not me. Almost each time I contact them they give me a new "please wait another couple of weeks" or "it will be available on ___" or "you can request a refund" or even try to force a refund on me if it is not delivered by a certain date. The real slap in the face was telling me to cancel the order and then order when it is back in stock (at a price of $559.37, more than $200 over what I paid! That's customer service?!).
When you look at their site, you can see by the reviews that many people have received their robot vacuums long after my order which tells me they are trying to frustrate me into cancelling the order possibly due to lack of profitability and not because it is "out of stock".
In the past when there was an item that was out of stock, you could not place the order but interestingly, I can place an order for the robot vacuum at full price. Their explanation was:
"Please keep in mind that the stock and availability shown on this site is for your reference only. While we strive to provide the most accurate and timely information on availability, availability information may be out of date and may change between the time you have added an item to your shopping cart and the time when your order is received."
They seem to tag-team at coming up with excuses. I have been asked to wait until the end of March (now a 1/3 of a year before potentially shipping) and they had provided the following:
"When the item is available, we will ship it to you.
If we still do not ship your order out at that time, you can contact us to cancel the order."
Again, they REALLY want me to cancel the order. I have ordered many items from Gearbest in the past (tablets, keyboards, miscellaneous electronic items and toys, etc) with no issue until now.
The only reason I have not given them a one-star rating is that they might actually send me the vacuum for which I have already paid. It is quite possible they are just stringing me along with "false promises" only to frustrate me into cancelling the order.
As a token of their "sincere apology" for my inconvenience they have offered me $4 in Gearbest points (200 points). Is that good customer service? I could have made more than that investing my money .
You can buy products from Gearbest but if you shop around, you can often find the same or similar products elsewhere for the about the same prices with less hassle and wait time.
I am dealing with them on their site. Seems they try to respond to poor reviews to try to create the impression that they are dealing with the issue at hand. Further, most people are aware that Terms & Conditions are full of clauses wherein one's agreement to use a Vendor's site and their services, let the vendor off the hook for situations like this. That is standard and I get it. It is still my prerogative to inform others of what they can expect in certain situations. As I said, I have had good dealings with Gearbest, one so-so transaction but this one appears to be handled poorly. I will continue to try to sort out the problem on their site as I have been over the last two+ months.
UPDATE 2019-05-08:
I assume we were finally contacted by a real person who actually helped me. Apparently still back-ordered on the Xiaomi robot vacuum, they sent me the next generation model, the Roborock S50. Based on my previous explanations of already having purchased the spare parts, this was an acceptable solution. The vacuum arrived in acceptable time considering the voyage from China. Having used the Roborock a few times, I am glad to report that my wife loves her Christmas gift (yes, it is the beginning of May). Overall this endeavor was 5 months from order to receipt. In the end, Gearbest made good and did not force a refund on me.
Conclusion: If you run into this sort of difficulty, you have to be patient and don't lose your mind. Getting uber upset doesn't help and you only aggravate yourself. To be fair, I have had 4 and 5 star experiences with Gearbest but have not reviewed them as such. Human nature tends to be that we don't compliment as much as we complain so, despite this experience being 3 stars, I will give them 4 overall. Thank you Gearbest for getting a real person to resolve the issue and not leave me to the AI responses. "
