"The burnt handle was a strong enough smell to mess with cooking. I replaced it with my own handle. Not a problem for myself, but not everyone can do this. The pungent burnt wood ...fire hardened handles should be part of the description if a knife falls into this category. I first tried sanding and oiling the handle without success. It can't be easily covered ..the strong aroma. Replacement gave me a chance to improve the shape and balance to my fit preferences ..a positive in the end. Great blade if not the prettiest. The blade deserves 4.5 stars. "
