"On Feb 15, I ordered a software product. It was listed as "IN STOCK" (Not now, but it was then) It was supposed to be delivered in 3-5 days. I have an Email to confirm this. On Feb. 27, I contacted the company and asked why the product was at least 10 days late.
Their response (I have the email to confirm this):
"We do apologize but this is a special item that does take a few weeks
to deliver. Please advise if you would like to continue to wait."
They: 1) did not have it in stock when I ordered it -- or at least did not have enough to deliver mine in 3-5 days, and 2) did not do me the courtesy of sending me an Email telling me of the delay. To be completely fair, the FTC gives them 30 days to do so. But from my perspective, they should have informed me right away as that FTC rule was written pre-internet -- in the days before people expected "instant response" -- or something close to it. They also should not have charged my card, which they did, until it was shipped. (Unethical to do so -- not sure about the legality).
I told them to cancel the order and, if charged, credit my card. My card, as noted above, was charged! This is the Email they subsequently sent:
"Your order is cancelled per your request. It takes about 3-5 days for your
credit or debit card to reflect the voided transaction."
They were using my money and reducing my credit availability when they knew the product was unavailable and wouldn't (according to an Email I received from them) have the product for some weeks! (See Email below to substantiate this.)
I think this is, at a minimum, highly unethical -- and I won't be doing business with them again.
They have no telephone # listed that I could find. So I depended on their "In Stock" listing when I ordered it. (I often call to make sure it's in stock before ordering.)
After I cancelled, this is the email I received (and have kept for substantiation):
"We do apologize but this is a special item that does take a few weeks
to deliver. Please advise if you would like to continue to wait."
FEW WEEKS!!!!
They apparently have great prices and have been good to order from for many people according to this Site. But if you read the reviews, what happened to me is quite frequent.

"Beware this is a shady company. Like many other customers, I fell victim to ordering a product from their website which was out of stock. They did not list the item as out of stock; I was able to add it to my cart and place the order. The item I wanted was an Asus Radeon 7970 Direct CUII graphics card which is a hot item and out of stock everywhere that has it for sale at a reasonable price. I stumbled onto this site through a google shopping search and was quick to order it once I was certain this was a legitimate company, which it is, albeit a shady one. They charged my card and only afterword in coming here to check the reviews did I read about them selling out of stock items which they know they cannot fulfill. I sent an email to them and after 4 hours I got a response, sure enough "We do appologize but this item is currently unavailable". Great, so you charged me for an item you don't have and don't notify me. I requested a refund but now my money is being held hostage while I wait for the refund to process.

STAY AWAY FROM COSTCAPTAIN UNLESS YOU LIKE HEADACHES!

"We found CostCaptain to be a great solution! Our Sophmore is working on his Senior Project over the next 2.5 years and the Outlook and Office Programs will allow him the updates he needed to make the most of his time. In fact, part of the program has him utilizing an iPad and MacBook as well, so we will likely be seeking newer Office/Outlook softmware for thos Apple hardware he'll also be using."

"I can't say enough about the quality of the service and the people with whom I've dealt. If I've had a problem, it's been addressed immediately and with courtesy and concern. If I've had a question, it was dealt with in the same manner. If I had to rate them on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being highest, in my book they would rate 10+. "

"I ordered the Bamboo Connect Tablet two weeks ago. They took the money out of my account but two weeks later my order was still in the processing phase. Their costumer service didn't give me any answers, only that my order was queued for processing. I ended up having to cancel my order. I do not recommend buying from them."

"When I first went to your website I didn't know the rates were for students. It took several days for me to get the information required. Once that was done I received my products rather quickly. The other problem I had was entering my credit card. The CostCaptain Club button kept turning on by default. So in the end I was signed up for it when I didn't want it. The person who answered the phone when I called took care of it immediately. I appreciate the fact I wasn't given a hard sell speech."
