"I received a refurbished Optiplex 990 32bit Win7Pro computer as a gift, but it came only with a DVD/CD ROM not a Read/Write device required by the Windows backup/restore utility. I can't write to it, so I can't use windows 7 Backup and Restore to create recovery DVDs.
Also, the F8 during boot is supposed to bring me to a menu to restore from the hard drive recovery partition, but the F8 key has no effect. The Optiplex did not come with a Windows Installation DVD, so I can't make a recovery boot disk from that even if I had an installation disk.
In case of a defective C: partition, I need to be able to boot into a Win7pro environment to restore a backup; but there is not way to do that now. So, I have to order a CD/DVD Read/Write device and install it. I shouldn't have to do that.
I went to DellRefurbished.com and submitted a request for help, but never received a reply.
