Horrible, predatory rate hikes

"I rented a 7'x10' unit for a beginning rate of $153 per month. The door is poorly sealed and there is a thick layer of dirt covering everything in the unit. A little over a year later my rate is $196. To add salt to the wound, I receive daily ads in my yahoo email for same-sized units available for $91 per month. When I called customer service to inquire about switching to the cheaper unit they told me those were promotional rates for new customers only. I asked if the new customer who gets that deal will be paying $196 after their first year and they stammered, not knowing how to reply, then said "Well, everyone's rates are subject to change, that's how this business works." I strongly suggest folks look elsewhere for storage solutions. This company is akin to something you'd expect from doing business with the mafia. I can't stress enough how much Public Storage should be avoided. you're better off taking your property and burying it in the woods."

"I have been with this Public Storage since 2017, the rates have gone up, $55 every year since. It hard to keep up, I believe they are scamming me. "

Renting a storage unit from public storage

"Public storage on mount view Dr. In Colorado springs Colorado as I am sure all of the corporate sites are the same are terrible awful people that are only out for cash and raise there prices on units called to ask why was raising price so high and the answer was because WE can. Have rented unit for over 3 years no thankyou for your business no thankyou for all the $ You have paid including late fees you pay which occur because I can't pay the first week of most months i am in a jam this month and pmt is going to be late just one day later than the last day of the month . Was told too bad now you have to pay two months rent and another late fee to save my property. Nice public storage not only do you gouge $ from your customers you also steal .well in the words of Cindy your manager on mount view in Colorado Springs it's because you can"

Unethical

"It happened to me as well...a 20% late fee is UNETHICAL. Which no one has to agree to if they would allow us to read the contract first. A house rental late fee is only 5%!!
Not to mention NO ONE HAS TO PURCHASE THEIR INSURANCE. ITS OPTIONAL.
Well just do your research online from their lawsuits for the use of "penalty" late charges...raised rent after your there for several months.
As soon as it happened to me I closed the account when the corporate agents used their script over the phone tactics to over charge a "penalty"instead of a simple late fee. Which 5% of a unit of 134$ is fair. Not 20% which is not labeled on the contract and if it was I would have never signed (which is why they don't label it) (UNETHICAL) so until it is clear on the contract that I agree to 5% only. I was not given the full contract until after I signed a small electronic pad in the office and it was on my account after login but not available until after I signed.
No upfront information explaining this and when asked it was just a few dollars...so to me it felt good being that it's just a storage unit not leasing a car here.
Look at the store in Illinois that closed down for one day for the cold temps which fell on the day at which fees would be assessed they were open the day prior it was cold out and then reopens the next day and it was still the same temperature outside and ALL cash customers were not allowed a next day grace period to pay the late fee causing a huge amount of fees for them to charge. UNETHICAL.
Just for my further experiences when dealing with public storage agents Over the phone I would either be verbally pushed around met with "just deal with it attitude"so to me that just screams that a company doesn't care of their employees. They never once instructed me to email a dispute team at ****@**** which I found after reading some fine print for 30minutes. Which you have to to at least try to resolve that way before taking up a lawsuit with them so this was all sent to that email for review. This review helps with clarity for everyone.
No one was helpful at any point but when I set up my unit.
When a email is sent through the only way they allow "their website form" with no ability to CC yourself or anyone else or keep track of them (which is another unethical tactics) (so I record by video and screenshots to hold my information.
When speaking with agents I demanded a supervisor call back or email me for a phone appointment being that the agent said they are unavailable at that time...which it's been 48 hours and I sent 3 emails during that time to remedy the issue with no response. No call backs. No voicemails. No texts.
I Immediately closed the account being I will never do business with company's like this and everyone needs to follow to not allow them to continue unethical practices.
When you Look at your contract it will say they assessed the late charge on the 7th and will not give any reasoning behind how they came up with the assessment and one agent said he " just doesn't know" To me unknown assessments By my business standards this is unethical. Auto pay can help but if for any reason a lapse happens in a deposit it can cause more fees from the bank being which doesn't match that we are dealing with a storage unit that is supposed to be clear in pricing.
They do not record calls as to not allow any evidence to be used during a lawsuit nor will they CC any emails back to you that was sent to them when asked.
All Company's that are truly ethical will label ALL fees by a " clear number" that is expected to pay if that happens everyone has a right to know the fee amounts up front.
Also when a demand is made to speak with a supervisor and that falls on deaf ears is a huge problem in any company.
Along with simple agent training methods to allow clients the ability to solve a problem with them.
The only reason it gets one star is I have to at least put one.
However the manager at the Charleston location was nice in setting me up with an account so she deserved at least that and I'm sure hears all of this but is just trying to get by herself. They don't pay well from when I looked on indeed for more reviews about them.

Less than pleased.

"I set up an appointment to get a space. I went to the site and I was required to buy their cylindrical lock - it cannot be used anywhere else, for any locking purpose. I was also required to pay $15.00 a month for 'insurance'. I had some things with me, I was pinched. My rental there will be for two months."

Bait and Switch

"On September 9th, I called in. I told the person over the phone that I'm looking for a deal to replace a storage space I have now. She found me a 10x15, climate controlled, drive up space for $86/month. That's much cheaper, so I agreed to leave work early to go in the next day and get my unit before the sale ends. This is a permanent price, not a first month deal, so it was worth the trouble. I did that, wasting 90 minutes and leaving work early to go and walk the space.

First of all, the person was lying, it wasn't climate controlled. But I can get a second floor climate controlled 10x15 for $92. So I walked that one and then went in to sign the papers.

Next, I had to buy their lock. I have a lock on the space I'm vacating, but I was told that I can't leave it without a lock until I move in, so I have to pay $19.99 for a lock. I looked it up, Amazon has the same lock for $7. Anyway, I'm still saving money, so I kept going.

Then comes the switch. That's right, Public Storage is a BAIT AND SWITCH company! I have another, smaller, undiscounted, space at a different facility, and that makes me inelligible for the discount??? They want to charge me double what they told me. Of course, the person over the phone who quoted the rate knew about this, but suddenly the next day this is a problem?!?!?!?

I called their corporate number, and the person who spoke with me was rude and unhelpful. Then she said I could hold for a supervisor, but instead she transfered me to a voice mail box. No one has called me back.

This is a breach of verbal contract, it's illegal bait and switch, and it's generally the sign of a crooked company.

THE WORST COMPANY AND THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE ONE CAN GET!

"THE WORST COMPANY AND THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE ONE CAN GET! Dismissive and obnoxious, rude and then talking down on a customer... I called in numerous occasions to let them know I no longer needed the unit. They indicated I talk to the unit manager. Had to get a two-hour ride to personally go and talk to him so that I would not have to deal with problems later. I followed instruction and even turned over the keys to my unit to the unit manager. Then they started billing me for fees I did not owe. I explained over and over that I had followed their instructions and went to talk to the unit manager in person to turn over the unit and the keys. Nothing. Now they are up billing me for September when I no longer use the unit since July. As soon as I complained and asked questions the customer service woman started cutting me off and would not let me get a word out. Then she told me "I have other customers I have to attend, not just you,..." then she hunged up on me. Who does that? It speaks of an inability to handle customers properly and lack of training... I will be writing multiple negative reviews based on my experience so that people can know what they are getting into before they waste money, valuable time and energy! NO STAR RATING!"

Don't trust

"I still can't move on. My valuable furnitures were gone just leaving them outside of the storage for 30 mins at Langhorne, PA location. I am a single mom struggling to buy stuff but why on earth I trusted a storage without a surveillance camera installed. Never again! Not worth the risk. "

Employee need more training

"I love public storage but the customer service needs improvement and lots of patience first of all they are dealing with people that are in bad situation from losing their their jobs their place or even people that are living in the streets or their car like myself and sometimes when we as a customer are not able to keep up with payments or pay on time it doesn’t mean that the employees have the right to talk down to customer or be unprofessional and rude to them a simple (lm sorry your going thru that but there is nothing we can do) is nice enough because at the end it’s not the employees fault that we put in this situation but they are supposed to get train to be professional and none judgements. Other then the place is nice clean and by my stuff been in there is helping me get on my feet. I do GOTTAH say going there or specially calling is a mission because of the way they talk down to you as if you were a bother to them. "

Rude and unethical

"Ms Roth (District Manager),

You recently re-instated the late fee for my June rent.

As I tried to explain, I attempted to pay my rent on the evening of June 6, but your payment website was down. I tried repeatedly to make the payment on the 6th, before the late fee kicked in, but without success.

It is not my fault that your payment site was down, and I attempted in good faith to make payment before the end of the day on the 6th.

If you advertise your business is open until 6 p.m., I arrive at 5:30 p.m. and the office is locked and the lights out, am I still liable for the late fee if you don't observe your own policies?

I have left several voice messages, which you have declined to return, so I assume the matter is dead. I consider that a cowardly non-response.

The gain of a $20.40 late fee has cost you a monthly customer payment of $108. A multi-million dollar corporation like Public Storage can easily absorb a paltry $88 loss, but you will be receiving a bad review wherever I can post one. My business relies entirely on word-of-mouth referrals from satisfied customers, so your company will never get a positive word from me.

Perhaps you can sign a new customer to replace me, perhaps not. After 9-1/2 years of business at your Public Storage facility, I will be moving out June 29 because of your obvious lack of business ethics.

Short-sighted, petty, and stupid.

Public Storage - 2211 Barrett Station Road, Ballwin, MO

"I had a bad experience with the customer service department on the process for renting a unit thru Public Storage. I called Mallorie at the Barrett Station location in Ballwin MO and unfortunately displayed my frustration. Mallorie handled my frustration very eloquently, listened carefully, and never argued back or hung up the phone since I was very unhappy. I was so amazed how she was very calm, professional and pleasant. I think she needs a lot of recognition since she handled this situation so well, so please give her a promotion!"

RAT MOTEL: DON'T STORE HERE!!!

"I'm not sure what is worse, the horrible physical condition of this business (rodent infestation) or the apathetic attitude of the management towards the filthy state they've allow it to remain! When the severity of the conditions was raised (potentially life threatening risk when dealing with rodent excrement) the general manager stated that they were not liable. The request that professionals be brought in to clean up the units, and subsequent loss of most the belongings stored, was denied by the same management. Adding insult to injury, when my son and I purchased filtration masks, and began the process of cleaning, the water supply was cut off. The use of the water was to wash our hands. Presumably because they didn't want the bad publicity of individuals wearing masks on the property.Too bad the same energy, that was given to protecting their tainted reputation, wasn't applied to fixing the problem of rat infestation.
It should be said, this was a property wide issue. The rodents were discovered by renters throughout the location. Sadly, I am not the only one who has dealt with the vermin: both four legs and two. Hopefully this review saves others from wasting their money, potentially loosing precious keepsakes as well as financially valuable items, and most importantly, prevents others from risking their health: physical and mental !!!
