"Looking at my current credit reports made me recall the old Spiegel catalog and I remembered what they did to me. I’m glad they are out of business!
In the early 1990s when I was in my early 20’s and living on my own, I was getting a lot of catalogs in the mail. Many of them were “buy now, pay later”. I made 2 separate orders with the Spiegel catalog: a wooden bookshelf and a sweater. I made monthly payments on these 2 items which totaled around $100. Although I paid the bills in full in just a few months, Spiegel gave me a lot of trouble via nasty letters in the mail and I never understood why! They put a negative mark on all three of my credit reports which stayed on them way past the average 7 years. This was a lesson learned to watch who I do business with. Awful company in my opinion."

"Anyone had any issues with being charged $14.95 for a privilege pass? I ordered something way back in 2009 and noticed (too late), a monthly charge of $14.95 for something I apparently agreed to by clicking on a button in an e-mail. I did not agree to anything. I contacted Spiegel who were adamant that I clicked on a button on an e-mail for a privilege pass which allowed me discounts. I have never used this service ever and they are still trying to charge me a $14.95 charge since 2009 ($1196). I'm disputing this matter with them but they are not very forthcoming in trying to help and are offering me at the moment a refund of 2 years for this service which I never signed up for. Please be very vary when buying online from them and if you do, please be careful which buttons you click on or you could find yourself paying for something you did not sign up for. I'm awaiting a follow up call from their management team. I will report back and let everyone know how accommodating they are.

"Ordered a $34 sale jumpsuit in my usual size 8. All my old Spiegel size 8s still fit me. I expected this to be like the Spiegel of 5 years ago. It's not!!! I don't know who is manufacturing for them, possibly someone who uses Asian petite patterns. I can't get the jumpsuit over my head. There's no access on top and the side zipper is too short. The pants don't even touch the ground and I'm average height. The worst thing is, there's a note inside that says I can't return it. Daughter wears a size 4 and she can't fit this either. I have no choice but to donate. I doubt they will even take it. It's a rip off! Don't buy here! This is not the Spiegel of 5 or 10 years ago!!!"
"This company is a SCAM, SHAM, and a FLIMFLAM! Tried to return merchandise back to this company due to defective material and was told to "snap a picture of it and don't damage it on purpose." They've must have known it was defective based on that response. Filed a complaint with the BBB, even that agency said that Spiegel refused to respond.

"What happened to the Spiegel of the past? It is no more. I placed an online order and received an auto response. A week later I went online to check the status and discovered it had not shipped. I sent an inquiry email to Spiegel customer service. I received no response. A few days later I checked again--not shipped yet--resent inquiry...no response. I did this one more time, and still did not receive a response. 3 weeks after my order, I was unable to check the status of my order because Spiegel closed my account-- an account I have had for years! I was not rude or nasty. I just asked a simple question. Never, never order from Spiegel!"
"I used to order from Spiegel without ever experiencing a problem. It is clear that those days are over.
The dress that I ordered never arrived, although the estimated delivery date had already passed. I contacted customer service by email (I couldn't find any other way to contact them at all) and told them my story, supplying invoice number and all other documentation. They said they are looking right into it. If you hear from them before me, please let them know that I am still waiting!
Fortunately for me, although they had my credit card information, the charge was never put through. Even better, I found an adorable black dress at a local store that fulfills my needs.
Too bad. Spiegel used to be very honorable and reliable. For that reason, I hadn't bothered checking the reviews before I made my purchase. It would have saved me time.
It is very unnerving dealing with a company such as Spiegel. Customer Service has clearly gone down the drain.
FOLLOWUP: Spiegel's finally found time to answer my query on 2/15/15. They claim they no longer have the item I ordered. Funny . . . it is still being shown as available on their website. Further, they confirmed that they did not charge the item to my account. (Hah! as if I would pay it, anyway!) and they apologized. Actually, I am sorrier than they are for even bothering with them in the first place.

"Back in the 1980s and the early 1990s, I used to get a package in the mail from Spiegel nearly every week. Their catalog (this was before online shopping) was a veritable treasure trove of high-quality fashion items for reasonable prices. I loved Spiegel. As I moved to larger cities and more brick and mortar stores were available to me, I didn't do as much catalog purchasing, and Spiegel eventually stopped sending me their catalogs. However, before Christmas of 2012, I again received a Spiegel catalog in the mail, and based on great past experiences and nostalgia, I ordered several items.
What a disappointment! This retail outlet has really gone downhill. The quality of the items (all clothing) was shoddy, NOTHING was made in the U.S or Canada (despite what the catalog listed) a skirt wasn't even colorfast and turned my skin blue, and Spiegel's return policy is so costly and convoluted that it would have ended up costing me more in time and postage to return the items than it did to keep them and take a loss. NEVER AGAIN!!! Unfortunately, unless this solid old Chicago company finds a way to shape up and live up to its former reputation, it will be going the way of other classic retailers ... down the tubes."
"Shape FX - a company owned by Spiegel does NOTHING to assist when you order and item that is out of stock. No courtesy call and/or e-mail to tell you it is NOT available. Nothing said when I ordered it. They just cancelled the order and do NOT notify you. TERRIBLE customer service. Never again ordering from Spiegel OR Shape FX!"
"Spiegel has always been slow on refunding your money on returns. I was told they this am that an order they received and signed for on 7/28 will not be refunded for 4 weeks. This is slower than any mail order merchant I have ever used. According to the customer service dept they make no apologies for their policy and will make no effort to speed up the process. I won't do business with them again."
"While Spiegel's may provide quality product, customer service is inadequate, as well as inefficient. I have had several issue with the delivery of my merchandise over the years including delays, products no available, and delivery without notice. However, my last order with this company has made me decide not to EVER use their service again. Not only was my merchandise shipped to an old address, which I updated in December 09 and I am currently receiving my bills and advertisement at this address, but I was not informed of the issues pending. I did checked with UPS to track my package. Spiegel's is neither worth nor deserving of my business.
