"This order turned out to be a bad experience that is not typical of my purchases from Surplus Computers. Usually I never have a problem, the merchandise comes in and it is as advertised and works well. So I never had to deal with returns before that I remember.

I had 2 problems with this order - big mother seagate drives (FH) that didn't work (4 pack, 2 were bad). I had purchased this same drive in the past and didn't notice that they were now sold as is. They were advertised as factory refurbished, very reliable and so on. I often buy factory refurbished and have never had a problem before or since. I managed to work out a deal with them and got 2 working drives (and set up the disk array). This took a lot of time though.

The other was with a 22" flat monitor. It took a long time to iron this out as the RMA department/shipping seemed to take a long time to turn it around. Eventually I got another refurbished monitor that while it works is still fuzzy. Convergence controls don't seem to improve it. That monitor is now at a local church on a machine that doesn't require a sharp monitor. It was much easier than dealing with returning that one too. I purchased a new one to replace it.

I was also surprised that shipping didn't issue a UPS return tag for the monitor rather than sending me a new shipping label. Since the sending and return address were the same it caused all kinds of trouble when I tried to send it at the UPS store. Eventually (like 20 minutes later) a manager came out made a few calls and took it.

The return situation may be a reflection of the holliday rush. However it took so long that I found it unacceptable. I probably will buy from them again, just not refurbished stuff unless it is a good deal."
