"I am working on a book involving operatives who countered German espionage and sabotage in New York before America entered World War I in 1917. Along the way I have needed several rare books. Biblio.com has turned these up for me at most modest prices. One "Spy and Counter-spy" by Emanuel V. Voska was procured from a Florida dealer who had bought a decommissioned copy from the Fort Worth Public Library, Texas. As far as I know, this is the only copy that is accessible to me. There is one other copy in a reference library in another state but they will not send it interstate (and Australia is a big country).
The subject of this review is a report of the 150th anniversary of The Providence Journal, in Rhode Island, which for many years was run by an eccentric, Australian-born conman, who changed his name and thundered propaganda against Germany in those years.
This cost only $5.95. But as Elgin Cary of Book-seller Support told me, it would cost $45 to ship.
Elgin reviewed the book for me and told me it would certainly be valuable for my research.
He said the big and heavy covers could be removed and the book sent for about $12.50 or so.
After the information he emailed me, $45 really wasn't a problem. This guy needed unmasking even though he's been dead since 1923.
However, I agreed to his suggestion and now await the book.
Who but dedicated booklovers and those dedicated to helping remote customers would spend this time and effort on a $5.95 purchase?
I say bravo to Biblio.com.
