Sennheiser - So So
"These headphones were bought for my wife. She didn't like them so I inherited them and bought her a set of Sony wireless (also less expensive) that she picked and prefers.
Sennheiser RS175 takes a long time (16 hours) to initially charge, unlike the Sony model which was plug and play out of the box.
Side by side for features:
- I don't like that the Sennheiser set has to be muted by pressing the power button momentarily, while the Sony is easier to use by pressing mute on the TV. Unlike Sony, which controls the volume through the TV remote,
- Sennheiser volume is dictated strictly through the volume + - buttons on the side of the headphone. Personally I think having the buttons there is a little obtuse because they are easily confused with the bass boost and surround boost. Sony outperforms in this category.
- Sennheiser could take a page out of Sony's playbook with the on/off feature too. Sennhieser requires the on/off button (which doubles as the mute button) to be pressed for 3+ seconds to activate the unit. Sony on the other hand uses a pressure switch on the headphone headband to turn them on/off automatically.
- Both Sennheiser and Sony turn off and start charging once they're placed back in the docking cradle.
- Sennheiser doesn't identify which headphone is Left or Right so finding that is trial and error based on surround sound through the headset.
- Sennheiser does allow the TV to be cranking out volume while the headphones are in operation, and the user wouldn't know that because sound is simultaneously channeled to the headset. Not sure what this feature is supposed to accomplish.
- Given the cost of the Sennheiser vs Sony? Sony wins hands down.
- Rating the sound? Sennheiser has an advantage with the bass and surround boost, but that's about it.
- Comfort of headsets? Sennheiser is heavier and not quite as comfortable to wear for long periods like when watching movies. The headset can be worn with controls either to the left or right but that changes the pad locations where they sit on your head, and that isn't always comfortable either. BUT, it rocks for techno, action and sci-fi surround realism. Sony is lighter and provides great sound too, just not as vivid and there are no pressure points from their headset.
- Range away from the tower is exceptional, although I don't know why you'd wander from the TV without just hitting pause.
Glitches - I did experience short term (momentary) sound drop out with these headphones, and it appears to be related to the close proximity of the LAN router for our home internet. It was frustrating to have the sound disappear without notice for a few seconds, and ruins the moment that was on the TV. It's correctable though.
Overall, these headphones are good for the sale price and free shipping. I wouldn't buy them again though as they didn't meet our original needs and they are fairly pricey.
Unfortunately in our area, no one sells Sennheiser unless it's special ordered. That means they won't give any product sale discount (like Black Friday) and don't provide local warranty either. Another thing I'm not impressed with about the Sennheiser image/brand.
Bottom line - know what you're buying and what you expect. They could be 2 different things."
