Lands& End clothes might be a bit stodgy but they're utterly dependable
"I have been ordering from Lands' End, off and on, for a couple of decades now. Sometimes they get a little too New England Preppy for me, and they had a bad attack of Spandex a few years ago, but I know that when I order something classic, what I order is exactly what I get. I just ordered half a dozen tee-shirts of various colors, and a rather expensive blazer. They arrived in good time, in a sturdy box. The sizes are true, the colors are clear, the materials feel good, and the blazer looks very fine. It's well-made, with a good lining. I've never had any problems with Lands' End customer reps or with returns, and I think their prices are very reasonable for what one gets. The only quibble I have is that my favorite colors disappear without warning. I understand that they want to keep their merchandise "fresh," but when I need to replace a favorite tee-shirt, I'd really like to be able to get Favorite Tee-shirt II. And I wish they still had their catalog for professional women; they had some really nice stuff in there. Ahh, the good ole days . . ."

Disappointing
"I had shopped at Coldwater Creek before the current owners purchased it, when it still had stores, and I had always been very happy with my purchases. I recently ordered 8 items from Coldwater Creek online -- and that's when the story changed. I had trouble with the site not accepting the "no shipping charge" code so I called to straighten that out. I was told to call the next day after the items had shipped, so I called the next day -- to be told that when the back-ordered items shipped, they'd take care of it. Back-ordered items?? Everything was in stock when I hit the "buy" button . . . but the customer rep assured me that it was just the tee-shirts and they'd ship in a few days. Hmm. I checked my e-mail, and there was a confirmation of my purchases -- saying that THREE items were on back-order. The "few days" for the tee-shirts were in 2 weeks, and the third item wasn't scheduled to ship until after 3 weeks. So I called back, and we went round and round for a while; the customer rep disappeared several times on hold but after 30-40 minutes the back orders were canceled and the shipping charge removed. So all was well, and I settled down to wait for delivery. The delivery was in good time, everything was nicely packed, and it was all horrible. All of it. One drape-neck shell was made from a really greasy, smarmy material; another one felt and looked like it was made from a cheap, thin, poor-quality undershirt. A draped cardigan had sleeves down past my knuckles. The trousers were labeled with the correct size but they certainly weren't cut to that size. There was one (1) item that was made from good material -- a dress. Nice color, lovely feel, well-made, and dowdy as heck. Just awful proportions. The neckline was too tight, the skirt was too long, and it made me look like I was wearing my grandmother's clothes. It could have been a darling little summer dress -- but it wasn't. Oh, man, it wasn't. I am VERY disappointed! I'm not wasting my time with them again."
