"I have rated CostCaptain.com 4 stars because I am "somewhat satisfied." I received my items in sealed retail packaging exactly seven calendar days from the date I ordered them, shipped via USPS Priority Mail (that I paid $4.95 extra for). I admit that I am spoiled by my experiences with other big online retailers who provide instant updates to order status and often ship the same day as the order. The details of my experience follow:
I placed an order for 3 copies of MS Office 2010 Professional on Monday 12/12/2011 at about 2pm EST. Nowhere on the product page EXCEPT for the photo of the product package does it indicate it is the "Academic" version or what that requires. You do not get notified that Academic credentials are required until you have placed your order. Since I am an educator this was not a problem, but I can see how others could be duped by this, and it seems a little unethical and deceptive that this is not pointed out more clearly on the product page BEFORE the order is completed. I scanned & emailed my credentials less than an hour later but did not hear anything back from CostCaptain until the following day - and then only after I made an inquiry via email to verify my documentation had been received.
Also, I was very annoyed that the "Media Replacement Assurance" option for $14.95 per item is checked BY DEFAULT. This is a ripoff, and I would bet that many are taken in by it. Shame on you, CostCaptain! Does that include shipping for $14.95? It had better!
Two more days pass and my order status still says "pending." At about 9 a.m. on 12/15 I email CostCaptain to inquire about my order status and why I paid extra for 3-5 day shipping. Three hours later I get an email saying my order has been processed and that tracking information will be sent via email. About that same time I received a separate email from CostCaptain telling me that my item "has shipped and the tracking information is below." A USPS Priority mail tracking number was provided, but was not "in the system" until over 24 hours later. Even then it only said "USPS was electronically notified by the shipper on 12/16 to expect your package for mailing. This does not indicate receipt by USPS or the actual mailing date." Okay, so maybe I'm expecting a bit much, but when someone tells me "it shipped" that means it's on its way. Of course, we ARE dealing with USPS here, with all that includes. I'd much prefer FEDEX or even UPS.
I was encouraged later in the evening of 12/16 when the shipping status at USPS.com indicated it had "processed through" the sort facility in Atlanta. It was out for delivery from my local post office in Northern Virginia by Monday morning and at my address that afternoon, just 7 days after placing my order.
As I said above, the items delivered were exactly what I ordered, well packaged and delivered in a reasonable time. My main complaint is with the slightly less than efficient order tracking process. I feel like my order only progressed as well as it did because I kept emailing inquiries (which were promptly answered.) Your mileage may vary. If my order info were updated more quickly and did not appear to depend on my persistent emails I would rate this vendor FIVE stars and would be more likely to order again or recommend to others. Also, be wary of the "Media Replacement" charge - this is a silly expense. Just use your DVD burner and ImgBurn to make a backup on a cheap blank DVD for about $1.00. CostCaptain should clearly indicate ON THE PRODUCT PAGE that academic credentials are required to complete the purchase. That's just an honest way to do business, otherwise it seems like a shady 'bait and switch' operation. But then, I would not expect an "honest" company to steal design elements (Shopping cart buttons) from Amazon.com in order to give their site the appearance of legitimacy or linkage to Amazon.
And I just noticed one more thing...
The email I got from CostCaptain asking me to provide feedback on my experience offered the enticement of a chance to win an Xbox360 with Kinect, but on this ResellerRatings page it only mentions an iPad 2, nothing about an Xbox360. Kinda weird. We'll see, I guess."
"B&H never fails to satisfy - easy to navigate site, good descriptions, and updated inventory status (no bait & switch with B&H). My order shipped promptly and I received shipping notification via email. Items arrived quickly and in perfect condition - well packaged. If it's photo gear I look to B&H first."
"I placed my order on 11/6/09. Received email notice on 11/9/09 saying my item would be shipped "with the next day shipment" and that my order status was being changed to "shipped." By 11/16/09 I still did not have my order, so inquired via email about status. Received automated email response below:
"Thank you for taking the time to send us an email. We get 100's of emails each day and it has gotten to the point that we just cannot keep up. Please call us on our toll free number so we can assist you quicker. That number is ***-***-****"
So I called the number - busy. Called again later - left voice message with my order number, my phone number and a request to be called back with status. I tried calling again on 11/17/09 and got only busy signal during business hours and left voicemail after hours indicating I wanted to cancel the order and would be contacting my credit card company to dispute the charge. I never got a call back or an email indicating what the problem was, and of course, never received my merchadise. I will never attempt do business with this company again and would advise others to avoid them as well.
There are plenty of other online retailers who know how to treat customers and respond to inquiries. DPH Arms is not one of those."
