Easy DIY

"I ordered a Blueridge low wall mini split and it was delivered in less than a week. I followed the instructions and it worked perfectly with no glitches! You need the right tools to do the job, E.g., flare tool, hole saw, wrenches. The tool cost is minor compared to contracting the work. Bending the tubing is the most challenging part. I should add, however, that I am a chemical engineer and the installation was within my comfort zone."

Blue Ridge mini split systems not accurately described

"Don't trust the videos regarding installs of Blue Ridge mini split systems by novices... both the parts they say you can easily install yourself and the parts that they suggest hiring an AC tech to install. I paid more for the Blue Ridge units over cheaper competitors because after watching the video on Alpine Home Air's website it made me feel like I could do those steps without too much effort, but that's not the case. Alpine Home Air advertises these as if it is everyday business to call up an HVAC company to pressure check, vacuum lines, and release refrigerant into the system. However, after calling 10 places where I live, only one would do it and they would charge $4,000, and were also very condescending about it. There is obviously a disconnect between the seller and HVAC contractor points of view on this process, and if you read forums BEFORE you buy (unlike me) you can save yourself a lot of trouble.

Secondly, my 3-zone unit is not as easy to put together as their video implies, and if you end up having to do the full install yourself and buying expensive equipment on top of buying these relatively pricey units (compared to Senville and others) you'll see the odds are against you to make it work and you will spend a lot of blood, sweat, and tears getting it all sorted out. Expect to have to buy tools to make flares properly (even if you do find an HVAC person to do the rest). The company's phone tech help told me that the flares may not be done correctly and that you should check and possibly redo them. He was right. Especially the 3/8" flares were not large enough to cover more than about half of the cone of the flare fitting.

Be aware that you might get a unit with condenser ports that don't match your line set, and so you'll have to use an adapter. When I called them thinking they'd sent me the wrong unit (because the model number I purchased did not match the model number on the condenser I was shipped) I was told there was a mix up with some misprinted labels and I definitely got the right one. It was kind of suspicious that he told me just to use the 4th line set hookup, when my unit did not have one, especially given the model number didn't match what I apparently purchased, but of course the guys said it was apparently normal to have misprinted labels and condensers that don't have the same number of hookups as they are supposed to. I had to use adapter which is less than ideal because you are adding 1 more connection that could potentially leak refrigerant, and one more flare you might have to potentially use with just a little bit of 1/2" tubing if you need to make a new flare. Definitely not an efficient way of doing things but it's normal so know this could happen. I'd say these units are suitable for the adventurous DIYer or one who has money to blow if they can't figure things out. Be warned that you may have to do the install yourself.

My unit also arrived in a dented package with two quarter-sized holes. Unlike the instructions state, there was nowhere to write comments, and I did tell the delivery driver who said it was the shrink wrap and I didn't see him write anything down. My unit does have a small dent in it and unfortunately because there was nowhere to report it I have to hope it didn't affect the functionality. If you check google reviews and BBB you can see damaged equipment isn't uncommon with their shippers.

Dissatisfied

"I purchased a new 2.5 Goodman AC condenser. When the condenser arrived it was badly damaged. I called in the customer service and notified them that the unit was damaged and I needed a replacement. I was told did I bought a scratched and dented unit and there was no replacement. They offered to sell me the parts that would be needed to repair the unit only I paid for a brand new unit not a damaged unit. I had to stop payment on the purchase and waiting for them to pick up for return I have bought a new unit from a different company for much less money I would not recommend Alpine to anybody."
