"Wow, I am not the only one to purchase a bad video card and get stuck with a $12 shipping and handling fee to return an item that was shipped with free shipping.

Must be we are re-shipping that one defective graphics card to multiple customers. Anyway it seems to be more than coincidental. That said I filed a dispute with American Express and they made good on the $12.00. They may not go after the vendor to get the $12 back but I suspect if more people dispute the charges with AM Ex they may increase the fees charged to the company based on problems encountered.

FYI - if you use AM Ex and return a product within 90 days of purchase, AM Ex Buyer Protection will make good on up to $300 in losses. So since the merchant saw fit to keep $12 Am Ex made good on it and refunded the $12 to me. Problem is resolved to my satisfaction!"

"I've never really been a big fan of AscendTech although I have ordered a few things from them in the past. You really do need to watch what you buy from these people. From the other reviews I've read I can agree with everyone that's had issues with defective products from them. First off, many of the items listed on their site are used, refurbished, remanufactured or the like. So watch what you're buying. Their return policy is pretty strict when it comes to refunds. Their customer service is pretty bad. I think they assume they're dealing with non-techs most of the time. And some of their items are way over priced, like RAM and hard drives.

My recent encounter with them involves a graphics card that worked at first but crashed after 10 minutes of being powered on. It was listed as recertified which was fine because the price right. This card was for a customer of mine as an upgrade for a Dell XPS system.

I try to save my customers some money by getting what I hope will be a quality product at a good price. Many times, when dealing with recertified items, you end up costing yourself money for having to return an item and time in replacing it.
After being in business for 11+ years doing computer repair and buying most of my items online from various sources, I tend to stick with a few vendors only. I find that the ones I have stuck with I've done so not for price, but for customer service, shipping cost/speed, ease of RMA/returns, and selection. I would say buy from Newegg and call it a day.

And from some of the positive reviews I've read here I have to say to anyone considering buying a new pre-built or kit sysetm from them to look elsewhere. I've purchased kits from them as well and I'm amazed at the lack of professionalism they show when doing a build. I alays end up rewiring something. Also the power supplies they use for their barebones systems are garbage. I always end up having to replace them within a year. There are other online stores to go to that offer just as good a deal as AscendTech if not better, with better parts, faster shipping, and much better customer service. "
