Prices are competitive, but they shine when it comes to customer service.
They give ample communication regarding your shipment, and excepted a return with free return shipping. I feel VERY comfortable ordering from them.
Also, they have a great online chat. I just completed my order, but selected the wrong shipping method. I started up the chat session, and in less than 5 minutes the shipping method was changed and refund for the difference was issued.

"I've ordered from backcountry.com / backcountryoutlet.com / steepandcheap.com probably over 5 times. Shirts, undergarments, jackets, headlight, boots. Each time the item is shipped immediately or within 24 hrs from the order and packaged well.
One clothing item I received was slightly damaged and I only discovered this upon first wearing it. I used backcountry's online customer chat and they issued me a shipping slip for free return of the damaged item, then shipped out a replacement item immediately. Once they received the damaged item (after I sent it back), my refund was issued within 24 hrs.
They sell high-quality products that are often difficult to find, even in NYC. Their regular prices reflect the manufacturer's suggested retail, but hey, if you don't like it, look somewhere else. Be an informed consumer. Their sale prices are often spectacular. Especially if you go through steepandcheap.com - I've had the same speedy service and shipping through this sister site.
I also appreciate the product reviews submitted by their other customers. They are generally fair and backcountry allows them to be honest. Some reviews have important information about sizing, important things a product is missing, etc.

"Backcountry.com is a good website with huge selection and inventory, and has an extensive outlet site with pretty good deals. Their prices are usually not the lowest, but they offer free shipping - which they tend to ship to me as UPS Ground - and I don't pay sales tax. They also ship things very quickly and with UPS ground I usually will get something on by Wed/Thu if I order it on Monday. Pretty darn good for free shipping, in my opinion.
I've sent a couple of things back in the past and never had to call to ask "where's my refund?!". I feel I can trust the company to deliver on what they say they'll do. I've probably made a dozen or so orders over the past 8-10 months or so.
Also, if you sign up for emails you actually do get coupons for 10/20% off on a reasonably regular basis. I also got a 10% off coupon included in a recent delivery of snowshoes and I'll be headed right back there to get the avalanche transceivers I need.
Overall, a great company to deal with and I'll continue to use them until they mess me around, which I hope will never happen.

"same experience as others. They weasel out of honoring their promotional discounts and customer service only gives you a run around.
Oddly, while explaining why I couldn't use their coupon on anything I wanted to buy, they proudly stated they are overpriced, selling most things at full bore MSRP, and ANY price(even a couple fo pennies) below MSRP is considered a "sale price" and is therefore not eligible for their promotions.
So if you like paying too much, and selecting from their top of the line (and pricey) limited selections, and don't have to use customer service, then they might be good. Don't even consider trying to use a promotional code though.
They did eventually "split the difference on the misunderstanding that others seem to have had also", and more importantly promised they will look more carefully at the wording of their offers in the future. Time will tell...."
