"Here's Yet Another Unsatisfied "Potential Customer" with my formal complaint below.
They responded with a phone call today and the man never identified himself, just said "This is Sonic Camera" and asked for me. When I said "speaking" he said "we got your complaint, what do you want?" and I said "excuse me? What do I want" and he said "yes, what do you want from us" and I said "Wow, another rude employee" and he said "I listened to your original conversation and you were the one that was rude to our salesperson" and I said "you gotta be kidding me" and he repeated himself "So, what do you want" and I said for Jordon to get reprimanded" and he replied "never gonna happen" we said some other words and I hung up and sent him a message stating I called the Better Bus. Bur. and copied 9 pages from this site with all the complaints.

I am highly disappointed with the service I got today 8/29/08 while talking with
your unprofessional staff - in particular a sales person by the name of Jordon ext.
224.
He was so helpful yesterday 8/28/08 1pm, when I was interested in placing an order
(#25623). But when my credit card wouldn't go through, he told me I would have
to call the bank directly to have them approve it. After waiting on hold with Wells
Fargo and getting the run-around, I decided to hang up and left for the day. I then
went online last night and found the same package for almost $800 cheaper. So I
ordered it through another company and assumed that the order through your company
hadn't been gone through since no authorization took place.
This morning I came into the office with a message from Jacob ext. 240. He stated
the transaction had gone through by using multiple charges instead of the lump sum
and I needed to call back for the correct billing address to process the order.
I called back immediately and told him I had changed my mind and to cancel the order.
He asked why, I told him when I couldn't get through to Wells Fargo, I looked
online and found it for a cheaper price. He told me it was impossible. I told him
I still wanted to cancel, he told me to hold on. Then instead of telling me why
I was being put on hold, he transferred me to Jordon - I was unprepared for the
unprofessionalism that came next.
Jordon answers and me being unprepared I was being transferred was surprised he
answered. I told him I was put on hold with Jacob. He asked who I was and then said
he could help me. Okay, I said and reminded him about our conversation yesterday
and that I couldn't get through to Wells Fargo and had ended up going online
later that night and found it cheaper. His tone and demeaner changed and he said
there was no possible way I could've gotten it for less than the price he offered.
When I told him in fact I did and placed the order last night, he said "if
you cancel your order, I'm going to charge you $449 for the cancellation and
processing fee". When I told him there was no possible way he could do that
because Jacob hadn't finalized the order and was waiting on my billing address
and the bank nor I had given him authorization, he interrupted and said he could
since the card went through with the multiple charges. I asked to speak to his supervisor.
He stated he was the supervisor, when I asked to talk to the manager he wouldn't
transfer me, he ranted about how there was no possible way I could've gotten
that price- almost calling me a liar. I called him and ass and that indeed I got
that price and that he didn't understand the laws and couldn't charge me.
I told him I would dispute the charges if I saw any and he said if I don't pay
the cancellation fee he would send it to a collection agency.
I have called my bank, cancelled my card and have a dispute against the two charges
$500.00 and $408.97. I also called Jacob back and requested an email confirmation
which he just sent stating ALL charges will be refunded.
So all is fixed as far as my credit card, but not with my anger towards Jordon.
I will NEVER use your company due to Jordons attitude and unprofessional treatment
of a me as a potential customer or future customer. I understand that he lost the
sale, but does he not realize that the word of mouth in my industry is very profound
and having a bad reputation for handling a situation like this will harm your company
in years to come with the bad reputation that he has created??? This man needs to
be reprimanded, but should be fired due to the poor and unprofessional attitude
and am sure I'm not the only person who has a run in with him. He is losing
you customers and is suppose to be portraying your company as a reputable company???
I expect a call or reply back to this message so I'm aware this isn't getting
brushed under the carpet, because if it does, I will make a point in passing the
word along about this company and its practice with any customer who changes their
mind...unbelievable!

"Scam, Scam, Scam! What can I say? Everything you read here about Sonic Camera is true! Anything you see on their site with a great price they do NOT have in stock and probably never did.
On Saturday 26th July I order a Canon 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 IS USM Lens for $369.00. Great price. I too ordered with AMEX card. I received the email for confirmation Monday morning. I called and confirmed and I also confirmed it was in stock. They wanted me to change from Amex to Visa so I did (watching charges on that card now). This morning I received this email:
-----

This is a total scam site! A friend of mine ordered something completely different and received the same freaking canned message! I really don't know what they are doing. It makes no sense to not have product unless they are taking your credit card information. I am watching my AMEX and Visa very closely."
"After extensive research on cameras, we found just the camera and package we wanted at Sonic Camera, placed an order for a brand new camera we'd been wanting for years, and celebrated and started imagining all the things we'd do with our camera when it arrived in a week or two. The site said we'd have our camera in 8-10 days. Two days later, e-mail arrived saying we'd have to verbally authorize the sale. I called Sonic Camera, and was placed on hold for 20 minutes. I had to go to work. When I came back I had received another message from the camera shop, but they were closed for the night. The next morning I called as soon as they opened at 9:30 and was on hold for 15 minutes. I finally got through to someone, he took my information, said the order was confirmed and asked if I wanted to buy some peripherals. I asked if the confirmation was complete because I wanted to get back to work. The man on the phone in a sarcastic voice said he just wanted to help me and then said it would be 3-4 weeks before the camera arrived. When I got off the phone, I received an e-mail saying the order had been canceled. I called back and got another person who, in a bored voice told me that indeed it had been canceled because it was no longer available. I couldn't believe this-- I had ordered three days before, and confirmed five minutes before and no one said anything about the camera being unavailable. The second associate told me in an "of course" tone that it wasn't available because they had a big phone promotion, and that even though I'd place my order first, the phone orders were fulfilled first. I asked to speak to a manager, and the associate said, "Sure, he'll be in around 11 AM." I asked him what he had available, and he said the only cameras of the type they had advertised were more than twice the price listed on the internet. The package, and presumably many other unavailable packages, are still listed for sale on their web site. Maybe it's just a New York thing, but the associates tones of voice told me they were not the least bit concerned with whether or not I had good service, or whether I shopped there again. Not what I expect when making a major purchase of more than $500."
"Horrible website - do NOT do business with this company. Look them up with the Better Business Bureau and you will see for yourself. I ordered a Canon 17-85 IS lens and was told I needed to call and confirm my order. When I called I was told I was being "upgraded" for only $65 more. This upgrade ended up being almost $100 more and the lens they "upgraded" me to was an 18-55 IS lens which is in fact a downgrade. My husband and I were told to talk to Nicholas but every time we called either he was not there, on the phone, they couldn't talk to my husband, etc. I called up and was told my order was canceled and not to call back again - then hung up on. I filed a complaint with the BBB and my credit card company is aware of the situation as well. Will update again once I find out if the order was in fact canceled. Like other reviewers we were told 30 minutes after the order confirmation that the lens was shipped. However, they were unable to give us any kind of tracking information. They also did not respond to emails.
Very unprofessional and misleading company!!!!
UPDATE:
After canceling the order on Friday and Monday, and having them tell me the order was canceled on Monday (then promptly hanging up on me afterwards), they turned around and shipped the lens on TUESDAY. When UPS tried to deliver the lens I rejected it after first getting the tracking number so I knew that they received the lens back. Disputed the charge on my credit card so I will see the results of that. "
"purchased a nikon 240x in late June, decided a few weeks later that I wanted the D60 instead so I called and explained my problem and without hesitation he gave me an RMA. No nonsense no nothing. New camera on the way. Would recommnd to anyone. "
"I wish I had found this site before I placed an order. On Monday July 21 I placed an order for a Nikon D300 VR Deluxe Package. The add showed the camera with a one year USA warranty. I got a conformation E-Mail at 12:49PM and then another at 2:01 telling me that I needed to call to confrim the order. When I called I was asked why I was ordering a grey market product, I told him that I did not realize that it was grey market because it said with USA warranty. I was told that anyone who saw that price should know that it was not a USA product. I said that I wanted to cancel the order and was told that I would have to pay a 10% cancelation fee. I was then high pressured into ordering a D300 body only at a higher price. I was also told that the batteries for my Nikon D70 would not work in the D300 and the D300 would be shipped without batteries, this was a lie because the batteries for my D70 will work in the D300.
After hanging up I did not feel right about Sonic Cameras and this morning called my bank and canceled my credit card as Sonic had not authorized payment yet. I then called Sonic and said I was canceling the order and was told that I would have to call back and talk to Josh in 15 minutes. I did call back and told Josh to cancel the order, he told me the camera had already shipped and they had authorazation on my credit card. I told him that the bank had assured me that the card was canceled and no charge from sonic would be paid. He also told me that it takes 24 hours for the bank to post the authorazation and it would be paid, he also tried to talk me into unblocking the card. I called my bank and they garrantied me it would not be paid. Shortly I received a call from Sonic telling me that they needed another credit card to bill to. I told them to cancel the order and was treated very rudely, but finally was told that they would cancel the order. I knew that they would not ship the camera without payment(just another one of their lies). I will now check out any company that sells on line before I order anything, I think I may stick to local dealers from now on. Sonic Cameras should be put out of business."
"I have to say all the comments about the rude nature of this company is true. I ordered a camera package and could not understand why I received an email telling me I needed to "confirm" my order. I have ordered many things on-line, and NEVER had to call and confirm for any of them. I was on hold for almost an hour before I hung up and tried again!
When I talked to the person, I simply canceled my order. I do have to say, they accepted my cancellation without hesitating. Of course, it would have been canceled anyway because I did not buy any extras.
!!PLEASE BE AWARE!! There are laws that protect the consumer especially on internet and mail-order purchases. You can return unwanted items (with in a limited time, but at least 30 days), and they must give you a full refund of the purchase price. You would do well to make copies of the refund request and send all mail certified with return receipt. Mail is the only way to verify what you have communicated, when, and that they have received it. They know this, so if you call on the phone, they just tell you you can't return it. You have no way to prove that you made the request, so they feel they don't have to honor it. Although, if it is a package deal, you must return all items of the package and get a full refund. Even a reputable store will not refund for parts of a package deal.
Finally, if you have paid with credit card or bank card (I think this is the only way they work), and they charge you different than what you agreed, or if they refuse to refund even after you have returned the product(s), then you can go to your bank or credit company and file a wrongful charge claim. If your bank or CC company is at all reputable (we will assume they are) then they can pull the money back, whether or not Sonic Cameras says they can. If very many people do this, it hurts Sonic Cameras ability to do credit transfers, as the companies that make credit transfers possible will quit working with them as they see them as a credit risk."
"On Monday, July 14th, I ordered an "EOS 40D Express Package w/Canon 17-85mm & 70-300mm and more!" camera package online from Sonic Cameras using my American Express card. The next day I received a call from "Josh" trying to sell me extra items for the package. I agreed to add a battery for the camera. Additionally, I was told that I had to buy shipping insurance @ 10% of the cost of the package because they would not ship without insurance. I said OK. The total cost of the package went from $1,149.00 to $1,444.50. "Josh" then informed me that they were having trouble processing AmEx charges, and they could only accept MasterCard or Visa. I told him I did not want to use those cards and to cancel the order. He said that they could ship COD. I agreed, and I purchased a certified check from the bank in the amount of the $1,444.50. Yesterday, the package arrived, all beat up, on UPS. The UPS driver and I opened the box to inspect it before I accepted it. Inside I discovered that cheap Sigma lenses had been substituted for the Canon lenses that were supposed to be included. I refused shipment and told UPS to send the package back. I called Sonic Cameras this morning to inform them of the problem, and ask them to resend the correct equipment. "Kevin" was very abrasive and stated that I did not have authorization to reject the package. I told him that they did not have authorization to do a product swap, and that I just wanted the products that I had ordered. He said that they would cancel my order, and would not ship the products that I had ordered. I told him that I would file a complaint, at which time he threatened to sue me. I told him to go ahead and try, at which time he hung up. This is clearly false advertising, and a bait and switch operation. I had read numerous complaints from other people on-line, but thought I would try. I even looked up the Better Business Bureau of New York history on this company, and it appeared that most complaints had been resolved. I should have known better. This business should be shut down."
"Well I stumbled upon Sonic through a web site called "Steve's Digicams" (pretty informative site if you're looking for info for a new camera). It was an AMAZING deal on a Nikon D300 - Almost $800 less than what Wolf advertises it for. Apparently it was too amazing. I ordered on Saturday with my AMEX card and all seemed well. I received an e-mail confirming my order and I went to bed. The next day I received another e-mail updating the status of my order to "Left MSG". Don't know what MSG was or is and that was confusing?? Anyway, something just felt weird about the whole thing, so I did a search for "sonic camera review" and found this site. Needless to say, I about crapped my pants when I started reading all of these horror stories! I was on edge all Sunday waiting for the dreaded e-mail (please call to confirm your order). But it did not come. Instead, I received a call on Monday while at work on my cell. This is how the conversation went:
"Sir we are ready to ship this out but I noticed that you paid with an American Express and we currently aren't set up to accept AX. If you can give me a Visa or Mastercard I can process this now and get it shipped out to you."
Well thank God I stumbled on to ResellerRatings this weekend! I was soooooo ready for this crap. My response:
"I don't have Mastercard or Visa, the AX is the only card I carry."
Him: "Well Sir, in that case I'm going to have to cancel this order."
Me: "Oh, O.K. Well I'm sorry, maybe next time."
Him: "Yep." Click.
Whew. Skated out of that one.
Thanks a lot to you and all of the others for the warnings! Real bummer is that I purchased a dang 4G Ducati CF Card to keep up with this monster of a camera, and there is no way I'm paying over $1400 for the thing. Guess the card is going on Craigslist or som'n. Paid $80 for that! What a stinker.
"
"I've done a lot of buying on the internet, and this was by far my worst experience. If I'd only checked this site first! I ordered a Nikon Lens, received a call on Sunday requesting the security code from the back of my credit card, and then was sold on a "better" lens for my camera. I agreed to the switch, but then when I received an confirming EMail I researched the "better" lens and found that it was of much poorer quality and did not even have some of the features that the 'Supervisor' promoted. When I called back, they were 'closed', so I sent EMail stating that I did not want the lens and that I wanted my order cancelled. First thing Mon. morning I called and spoke with the 'Supervisor' who told me that the order had already shipped and that he couldn't stop it. He gave me a load of BS about how the lens that he was shipping me was a special 'professional grade' model that even the manufacturer doesn't know about. Huh? I told him I wasn't going to pay for the product and he threatened to report the lens as stolen. He told me that he'd 'make my life miserable' if I didn't take go through the process of receiving the shipment and sending it back for a 'credit'. I asked, "Does this mean you'll issue me a full refund?" and he hemmed and hawed about policies. That was all I needed to hear. I hung up and called me credit card company immediately. I've often heard about 'bait and switch' tactics, but this is the first time that I've actually run into it. It was so blatant and rediculous! Somebody needs to go after these guys."
"Everyone who has eyes to see and is able to read understands by reading all the reviews that those guys are crook's and hopefully the law will soon take care for them. Just one other version of the stories was told before: I wanted to order a Canon EF 70-200mm 2.8f IS USM lense with those Sonic camera- guys because they had the lowest price and by the way a 5 star- rating with other web- pages. Got the same call as everyone else telling me that they are about to ship the item that I ordered and I would need to call back to reconfirm. Got the same kind of sales talk as everybody else. The thing what was new for me and by the way is a smart trick- the guy on the phone tried to talk me into a "similar" Sigma-lense because the original Canon lense would not have the ability to actualy use the 2.8 aperture. He claimed that this lense attached to an Canon EOS 40D camera would raise the max. aperture from 2.8 to 4.48 what would of course not be what I wanted to spent the money for. The lense he recommended- Sigma of course- would not do so and therefore would be the better choice. I checked several websites because got irrotated on this but the only evidence I found was that of course as with most DSLR's the focal length (70-200) needs to be multiplied by 1.6, not the aperture! So just another nice little trick to talk potential consumers into other products. Lucky me I did not switch over to another product, did not order any additional items without asking how much they would be and asked the sales guy at the end what the total would be and when it would go out for shipment. Surprise, surprise the order was cancelled today with the reasons they give everybody else. So from one day to another they realized tehy run out of stock andhave a backlog of 6 weeks. Just fairytales! I wonder if their would be ONE customer only out there in the US, getting the product he ordered with not buying additional items and for the price as advertised! Pls. let the community of "never returning Sonic camera customers" know!!
PS: After writing this first part of the review I went back and checked why the pricingdepot.com search engine would show 5 stars for those criminals. Looking at their website you already see who is sponsoring the search engine and reading all their positive reviews from guys like Kevin and Michael and such you soon figure out who is actualy talking to you. Last evidence I needed was that I tried to sign in and wright an review myself! Guess what? After endless pages of ads where I was asked to sign in to their news letters I finally received message that my account was opened up and I just should click on the link send to me to verify! I did this procedure a couple of times- I never got the confirmation email so was not able to write an review! Pls. be aware of that when wondering about a rating of close to zero on this website and 5 stars on pricingdepot.com! "
"I tried twice to order the Canon 28-135mm lens. Both times, I got an email asking to call them to confirm the order. I called, only to have the salesman go into a long bull session on why not to buy the Canon lens. Instead, they try to sell me a Sigma lens that I can get for $50 less on Amazon. Both times I told them I would stick with my original order. Both times, the next day I get an email saying that the lens was on back order for 6-8 weeks and that my order was canceled. This is a pure bait-and-switch shop. Stay away from Sonic Cameras."
"Ok. I read the ratings. I had same experiences as you all. After being screwed by PhotoDynasty.com, I found these bozos. Told them what happend at "Screw you to the wall PhotoDynasty" and was assured that would not occur with this group - and pigs can fly. "All items are in stock" and we do not operate thaty way. BAIT AND SWITCH is what it is. By the way, I ordered a Canon XSI package (basic) and went through all the same BS calls to "upgrade" - IF I wanted it upgraded, I WOULD HAVE ORDERED IT THAT WAY. Bottom line? What do we do? These clowns continue to SCREW the AMERICAN public. I am sending copies of ALL of your "wonderful reviews" of these CLOWNS to my congressman, governer, and the BBB. I can be reached at ****@**** we need to work together! This is for you at Sonic Cameras - threaten me like you did the others....GO AHEAD, MAKE MY DAY. Credit Card? Screw you...already took care of that. Credit rating? I will send them a copy of the emails you sent and this one too. I WILL do something. I am NOT going to take your crap. Raters - WE need to DO SOMETHING to get rid of NITWITS like this! Write your congressmen. Tell the truth about what they are doing. Other thoughts???
HEY! I had only one email. Unless ALL OF YOU email me with your dissatisfaction, we cannot put these bozos out of business. I HAVE made copies of all of the posts but ask that you email me as well to make our case. My email address is ****@****. IF you doubt this is legitimate, my cell phone is ***-***-****. Call me. I want to put these A$$Holes out of business."
"Warning! Even tho they refunded my $$, according to my credit card co, they doubled charged me.
Update:
RHEAANGELA: They actually refunded my money back to my card (I canceled that card anyway) and I'm sure they will do the same for you. NOT because they are good guys, but they probably know you have enough support to file a class-action suit. Hang in there!
This website boasts of great "retail" type of customer service at wholesale prices. The prices 'seem' good, but as far as customer service I had just the opposite experience! The WORST!
The person I spoke with, Kevin, should not be in customer service. He was rude, impatient, fast-talking and admitted he was getting "agitated" with my questions. When I called yesterday to ask about the delivery time for the Canon 10-22mm lens I ordered,he said I probably won't get it until next week sometime. I was willing to change the shipping option to get it before the weekend. Instead, he immediately talked me in to getting the Sigma lens for the same cost but will expedite the shipping and "I include a warranty". I asked why I would pay the same amount for a Sigma when they re offering the Canon, which normally goes for a couple hundred more...for the same price? His reply was because the Sigma has a glass lens and the Canon has a plastic one (by the way, another negative review about this bait & switch company states they were told the same thing about a Nikon lens..that it's plastic and they should upgrade.) I agreed to take the Sigma as I know they are good lenses anyway. The next day, after doing more research and feeling funny about him saying he'll "include a warranty", I called to cancel (within 24 hours), and he said it was too late. I told him I felt I was mislead about the warranty, (my mistake was to think it was an 'extended' warranty simply because all lenses come with a basic warranty..again my mistake that I did not ask more ?'s).
He abruptly asked why I felt I was mislead and kept interrupting me saying "We went over all this yesterday.." Well,SO WHAT! His job as a customer service rep is to go over it again if that's what the customer wants and be patient with their questions!! I practically quoted his words about giving me a warranty as if it were part of the deal, when all lenses come with a 1 year warranty. He flat out denied ever mentioning a warranty at all. That was a lie. Then he said the Sigma comes with their own factory warranty, not just the store warranty (as if the Canon doesn't)..well WHAT product doesn't come with a factory warranty?? Due to his unprofessional way of speaking to a customer, I asked to speak to a supervisor.... and surprise, surprise, he said
"I am the supervisor". They all seem to be supervisors. Having 30 years in customer service, I would've suspended a representative that spoke to a customer the way he did. I also told him I found it strange when I typed in "Sigma 10-20mm" in their Search window, it comes up with 'product not found'. But the Canon comes up immediately, stating it's a 'Canon'. He told what to type in the 'Search' (si 10-20)and it did bring up the lens, but does not specify the brand name anywhere. When I mentioned that, he got more irritated. He kept saying "It's for a CANON!"
I simply asked again why it doesn't it say 'SIGMA' Lens. His reply was "Because everyone knows the 10-20mm lens is a Sigma". Is that a fact?? What a stupid reply. The price also shows $999.00 GIVE ME A BREAK! NO store anywhere advertises that lens for that extremely high price!!! The average cost for that lens is $470.00. Not even the CANON 10-22mm sells for that amount! Seems they want you to think it's a Canon lens. Then I was told they are having a promotion for Sigmas and that is why they offered me the price they did ($519.00)when it's actually the average price. It doesn't make sense.(I got it even cheaper elsewhere) The bait & switch is they advertise the Canon 10-22mm lens for $519 which is approximately $200 less than most places. Once you place the order they try to talk into another less-expensive lens that actually sells at that price anywhere, claiming it's a better lens because they don't want to sell a $700 lens for $500. I seriously doubt I would've got that Canon lens at all.
Unfortunately I did not read the many dissatisfied reviews about this company before placing my order. I can tell others have spoken with the same person as their customer service experience is exactly the same. (By the way, I was told by another ignorant guy there that the negative reviews are submitted by competitors and not consumers..but they are the ones that have posted fake positive reviews..check out: http://thoughts-of-dave.blogspot.com/2008/03/more-fake-positive-reviews-of-sonic.html ).
I called them again to ask about getting a "return authorization number" and got a gentleman(?) who seemed like he was trying to help me. I tried to explain my story and what bothered me so much, he said "let me see if I can get you an extended warranty", put me on hold ONLY TO TRANSFER ME TO THE SAME GUY I WAS COMPLAINING ABOUT, WITHOUT WARNING! Apparently the guy who transferred me misquoted my words to Kevin. When "Kevin Glass" came on I told him I do not want to speak with him! He said he is the owner of the company. Kevin then said all calls are recorded and tried to put words in my mouth, claiming I accused him of offering me a free extended warranty & FREE filters!. Absolutely not true! I'd like to hear that recorded call! It's apparent they are inexperienced because the caller must be warned about the call being recorded or it cannot used for or against them. I asked him about his Einstein reply to me that "anyone knows that 10-20mm lens is a Sigma" therefore they don't have to state the brand name. He then asked why I was being a "smart-a##". Unbelievable!
Their email address from which I received order confirmation has been disabled!
DO NOT BUY FROM THESE JERKS! You probably won't get what you think you ordered anyway!

"I am not a professional photographer. My wife and I enjoy our Canon D20 for family, portrait and sports photography and we had borrowed a friend's 2.8 70x200 IS Canon lens and thought it was great. There is no way I would have ever spent that much on a lens until I used it but we were hooked. I knew just enough to be dangerous and get myself into trouble.
Then I spoke with Michael at Sonic Cameras and he took the time to explain many things to me and provided excellent information. He matched my needs to an even better lens and provided many great options at fantastic prices. It would be difficult to get this same level of competence at my local "big box" store where counters are manned by high school kids needing mad money for the summer. Plus, I have called back a few more times and they have been more than willing to continue to help me understand and use what I have purchased. I am extremely pleased with SONIC CAMERAS and would recommend them with a 10+ rating.
