"like others' reviews, Tredup is really a modern and 'elegant' way to steal your stuff!! I sent a full bag (most are new with tag items) of price worth over $2000 and guess how much I got? $30! What a joke!!
They accepted only new with tag items, but they did NOT accept many new with tag items, such as a ben sherman wool coat ($395) and a prada skirt ($300+)!!!
So estimate how much you may get from them
original price--$2000,
thredup listed original price-$425,
theredup listed sell price $96,
how much I got $30!
Think twice before you send anything to them!!! "
“Hi! We are truly sorry to hear you had a disappointing clean out bag experience. We keep very specific information on the processing and payout of every bag we process. We are happy to follow up via email and answer any questions and concerns you have about the full processing and payout of your bag B2FG9-AD7GG.”
"I really, really wish I would have found these reviews before becoming another victim of this scam. I feel completely ripped off - they offer almost nothing, then turn around and sell your stuff for many, many times what they give you. I wanted the convenience of putting it all in a bag, but I lost hundreds of dollars by doing that. I will never do it again. And I will never purchase clothes from them either, even if there's a good deal. I will do nothing to support a company like this one. What an awful business. I wish there were a way to get the warning out to more people. "

"More of the same here... totally shocked by the up front value I received from ThredUp. I sent NIKEs (never worn, ALDO shoes, Nine West, a ton of Janie and Jack and baby GAP stuff. Most of this was worn 1x if at all and after contacting them because of the payout discrepancy, they finally sent a list of what was accepted and what was not. Baby GAP dresses not accepted because of stains (BUT THEY WERE NEVER WORN)... certain brands not accepted but they're more designer than old navy or H&M!! So frustrated... will NEVER do this again and will stick to my local consignment where I received $60 more for half as many items! Wish I read these reviews before sending a packed bag to ThredUp! Am now sending emails to all of my friends I referred to NOT DO BUSINESS with ThredUp."
"THIS IS A TRUE THRED UP REVIEW AND STORY!
I used Thred Up both for consigning and purchasing items previously. As a consignor, I recognized I would not receive a huge percentage of what the items were actually worth, but I had to admit that it was convenient. I was selective in brand, age of clothing, and like-new condition, yet not many items were selected and paid out by Thred Up. I was on the fence about ever consigning with Thred Up again, but wanted to easily rid myself of my entire maternity wardrobe for two babies (born in two different seasons), so I foolishly decided I would consign again.
I sent in a bag STUFFED full of name brand maternity clothes. Almost the entire bag was from The Gap - with a few additional pieces from department stores such as Nordstrom.
Unfortunately, the Thred Up bag I used I had received from diapers.com so it was not automatically activated to my account like my previous bags. I do understand that it was my error to send a bag without activating it. This was clearly my mistake.
Then, Thred Up made multiple mistakes that clearly show a lack of professionalism, fair business practices, and good consciousness.
FACT: The bag I sent was opened despite the fact that Thred Up did not know who sent it or where it came from!!!
FACT: The items in the bag were then posted on the Thred Up website to be sold without Thred Up knowing who sent them!!!
FACT: The items in the bag were not all sold together, as I found on the Thred Up website an entire "bag" being sold that had some of my items as well as other, individual items, that were also being sold on the Thred Up website separately!
FACT: The bag containing multiple items was listed on the Thred Up website as having come from a "family in San Francisco," although it absolutely did not. I don't even live on the west coast. This was completely false information and leads other consumers to believe that the contents of the bag and other items were compensated for by Thred Up to a family that is actually 100% fictitious.
My greatest concern and complaint is that this is an example of really poor business practices - and could be seen as stealing from a customer.
The fact of the matter is that Thred Up is responsible for opening a bag and selling the contents of the bag without knowing where the items came from. Thred Up also created a fictitious "family" to list items on the website.
I was absolutely appalled to discover that the bag I sent in had been opened and the contents were being sold without Thred Up knowing anything about where the bag came from or whom the contents belonged too.
I WILL NEVER CONSIGN WITH THRED UP AGAIN. Don't be fooled by this completely questionable company!
"
"I read the review of the person trying to be positive and more "balanced." Yeah, had I stopped with just one bag, I would have been right there with you, sister. However, that reviewer stated that she had only sent one bag, and that is exactly why that review is misleading.
I have sent three bags, each with subsequently nicer (as in Nanette Lepore nice, to that reviewer's point), and each bag received a lower and lower payout - from about $50 for my first bag down to $0 - nothing accepted - from my most recent bag. I had ordered an additional bag, and thank goodness I didn't fill it.
They messed up one of the items in my second bag that they accepted on consignment (read: nothing but money for them, nothing for you) and had it listed in the maternity category, which it clearly was not. It took several emails to rectify this, and once it was done, I dropped their ridiculous price down several notches and - TADA! It sold within days.
Their "acceptance policy" has also very recently changed so that you will receive an even lower percentage of any lower-dollar items they actually accept (you know, the stuff that actually sells). Your consignments will continue to be listed at a ridiculously high price, so if someone is actually a big enough sucker to buy them at those prices, you could get a bit of cash.
Realistically, you need to get in there and adjust your price within the first week of listing (which, if you are a busy person, won't happen in time) so that you can get the item sold. Otherwise, be prepared to either buy your item back for whatever they are charging to ship it to you (which is in addition to return assurance for non-consignment items if you bought that) or have it "discarded." I agree with many of the other reviewers that there is some sort of pipeline for diverted designer goods. These things are NOT going to a thrift store.
If you go on their site, you will see TONS of items from Forever 21 and Old Navy that passed inspection. That's fine, but when you have multiple reviewers stating that they sent designer items with tags on that were not accepted, there seems to be a problem. Truly, I know that in my first bag, there was an item with small stains on it that they had no problem listing at near-new pricing. I just decided to take the chance because it didn't matter either way how that item ended up: sold or donated. ACCEPTED!
In my last bag, in which nothing was accepted, I accidentally shipped only one shoe and wanted to get the other to them in the next bag. I was informed that they have no way of tracking items without return assurance. That means that it is completely possible for anyone there to snag anything they want as long as the sender didn't pay for return assurance. (In their defense, they gave me a very small credit, but my answer and my credit only came after 10 emails.)
So yes - ThredUp makes it easy for you to clean out your closet by sending you a huge bag for free, which you jam full of stuff and wait for good news. Yes, if they accept your items, they handle all of the hassle of photographing and shipping your items, and their site is seen by a lot of people. HOWEVER, your item's likelihood of acceptance seems to decline with each bag you send (see many other reviews before mine that say the same thing). They have lowered their payout structure for moderately-priced items, they can't (or won't?) track your items unless you pay nearly $13 to get your stuff back, you have to pay another $6 per piece of consignment to get that back if it doesn't sell, and customer service takes multiple emails to resolve an issue. You also lose a whole bunch of time if you are a good little seller and take the time to check their "brands we accept" list and nothing ends up being accepted. This is time that could have been spent taking that very same item to a local consignment store or selling on eBay.
If you don't care and don't have time to worry about your things, ThredUp may be an option. But truly, if you don't care, just give it to a charity yourself and at least get a tax deduction.

"This is the first time I deal with this company and will be the last. I sent in a bag containing seven H&M button-down shirts and five United Colors of Benetton pants/ leggings. All of them are in the new condition. However only one of the pants was accepted and payout was $2.50. I can't believe that the rest of the clothes didn't pass their so called "strict" inspection. Emailed them asking what might be the problem of the clothes that were not accepted. Never got a response. Stay away from this company!
"
"I have used thred up for a few years and the last bag I sent them will be the last bag ever. They did not accept most of my bag and many of the unaccepted items were brand new. And I didn't get the bag return insurance because most of what I sent was new. Really disappointed to say the least!"
"ThredUP sucks... I'm so dissapointed. This company is made up of crooks. I lost some clothes that were in great condition. Some brand new from last year that were never worn. Out of that bag they took crap from 6 years ago. I'm angry. "
"The worse!!! I sent in my first bag of mid level label items and was ok with the payout so I sent in my designer items. Prada, Gucci, brand new Versace wallet etc. All high end and they didn't accept them and wouldn't ship them back. There response is they don't accept pants. Yes they do, they sell them right on their site liars!!! I think that they bait you with the first bag and steal your stuff once they think you trust them. BEWARE. Also what do they do with the designer stuff that they refuse to return? They probably have an alias company that they funnel the items to. DO NOT TRUST"
A rep from ThredUp, Thredup3, has responded:
