"I really hate writing negative reviews, but I have to warn others about this company. I ordered Vonage for my home phone service and I discontinued my current provider. I got the package and tried to use it, but the sound was fuzzy and the call quality was really bad. No big deal, I'll just return it for a refund right? Wrong! They charged me $30 for some setup fee and didn't give me a refund. I was passed from agent to agent because I complained about this charge that they wouldn't take off. So now I have to reconnect my original phone carrier and got $30 bucks taken from me. NEVER again."
"I take Vonage with me every where I go. I love it and it is great to call home and internationally"
"Very bad experience with Vonage. Subscribed to their much hyped no contract required VOIP phone service. Stayed on it for about 6 months. Faced lot of problems due to dropped calls despite very good broadband connection. Being fed up, when I decided to disconnect, I was slapped a fees of $127.78 for early disconnect. Talked to the customer rep and the supervisor. Both arrogant with no consideration for the problem with their service. I am not going back to them ever."
"STAY AWAY! Immediately noticed call quality issues even when no other internet activity was going on. Call-in echo that was NEVER there when previous AT&T phone service. Decided to give them a chance because price was so good. Followed Vonage tech bulletins to point of just having cordless phone plugged directly into Vonage box. Echo never went away. Calls from NC to NY were often 'no lines available' and when could get through just acceptable quality but frequently degraded and dropped. About 2-3 weeks ago it became almost impossible to even get NY. Cost $130 to drop service because I was 1 week away from 1 year. STAY AWAY - TECH SUPPORT IS USUALLY FOREIGN SPEAKING AND OFTEN USELESS!"
"I was unhappy with my Vonage service. The sound would cut out during conversations making it difficult to understand what the person I was talking to was saying, or for them to understand me. Occasionally the Vonage box that needs to connect to their server in order for the service to work would suddenly lose its connection. So I would be disconnected from the person I was talking with, and I had to wait several minutes for the Vonage box to reconnect to their server before I could re-call the person I was talking with. The worst part was when I canceled the service they charged me $117.52 for a disconnection and equipment fee. I regret ever signing up with them and I recommend people stay away from the service."
"I had ordered vonage and within 2 days we got the package to set it up. My internet was being updated and I was easily able to forward my calls to my cellphone by just going online. The customer service was prompt and they were nice on the phone.
I would do business with them again"
"Chose Vonage because the Sales rep informed me that I could block single calls. After a few months i finaly get a telemarketer call, I try to block, and they say they cant do that. I stop service and they charge me $40. Now i have an $80 useless Vonage phone and a $40 bill, Lying to get a sale is fraud, complait with BBB. "
"Just try to cancel before 2 years is up. You will be charged a $40 cancelation fee. You have purchased the vonage device - it cannot be returned and you are charged for the purchase. Any signup discounts are reversed and charged to your account. They tried to charge me $112 just to cancel my service and that included no air time charges.
I can understand a reasonable disconnect charge but they are ridiculous."
"When I moved from Jersey to PA I no longer had the option of using my cable companies phone service so I had to use a national provider. I read some pretty mixed reviews on their service but I decided to go with them anyway. My experience after a few months have been mainly OK.
I went with the $15/month package since I mainly use my cell for phone service. When I placed my order on the phone I was a bit thrown back at some of their policies and hidden charges. The main one being their "activation fee". It was like $25 which is no big deal but I later found out I could have got the modem from an electronic store and have it activated online in seconds.
The other disappointing thing about their payment options, or lack thereof, is they have no paper billing with the option to mail in a check. I specifically asked for this but was told its not available. I just like having a paper receipt and then mailing a check. For whatever reason they feel its necessary to automatically deduct my monthly fee.
The actual sign up process almost convinced me to hang up the phone. I had a young woman sales rep who I think was her first customer. Not only was she incredibly unprofessional but took over an hour to sign up. REPEATEDLY asking the same questions, asking very personal questions-I guess to fill the silence between processing but the questions really threw me off guard. Then hearing her co-workers laughing in the background with her telling me they are clapping for her when I told her I was 26 and single, very odd. The whole process was very drawn out, lasted way longer than it should have, and would never want to do it again!
I am now signed up and try to log on to my online account. The web page is down for maintenance! A Vonage rep called and asked how I liked their online features which of course I couldn't answer. She never called back. One thing that I didn't like is when the sales rep signed me up she gave me the wrong user name. Instead of what I told her to make it she used my full name. Not a huge deal but something simple I thought she could manage!
The service itself I am not too fond of either. It works OK but not nearly as good as my previous service. I can always hear an echo on the line, and have been told numerous times that people tried to call me but couldnt get through or the phone just kept ringing-even though I have call waiting. That to me is very disturbing and my biggest complaint about the service. I have call quality to the highest setting and have my modem/router/Vonage device separated so theres nothing more I can do on my end.
Another big drawback is my 911 address still shows as Not Verified. When I called them they said my address is entered correctly and not to worry. I do worry though when I check my online account and it still says unmappable to this day.
In closing, I like what Vonage offers. I just needed a land line for emergency calls or if my cell was out of service. I must say though, I have since found other deals that offer better prices for the same or better service. My major reasons for contemplating a switch is my 911 address not being mappable and the sketchy service. I have since read I will need to pay a penalty for canceling within a year so I will finish it out then move elsewhere. There are certainly better choices out there especially considering some of Vonages features dont work at all-like V-Fax. A few more months and I'm gone.

"I ordered vonage to get away from the over high charges from att. Arrived on time and was very easy to hook up. I left it on the default of 30kbps and it doesnt slow my net down at all.
The quality is same as my regular phone which is now turned off. I like the control i have over it thru my web account and that you can see all in and out going calls and the extra features are a big plus all foe less than half of what i used to pay to the regular phone company.
I havent used support yet so cant rate on that part. Overall i am very happy with it and wanted to post a more recent reveiw than the very old ones on here."
"I posted the review below a few years ago. Since then, Vonage's service has improved remarkably, and I have no complaints. Voice quality is good, reliability is excellent, and the price is good. My only complaint is that it's not reliable for faxes, but they're upfront about that, so I cannot fault them for it.
Vonage's service has been severely lacking in the time that I've used it. It took more than five months to transfer my phone number from Verizon to Vonage (during which time I had to pay for both services), and ever since I was finally able to use the Vonage service I had been paying for, I've had problems with frequent audio drop-outs.
I had issues with audio quality for the first few weeks, but they quickly went away. Since getting the number transferred, I have not had the problems other people have reported. However, it's very common for the line to go dead for 10-20 seconds during a phone call, for no apparent reason (Internet service not interrupted). Most people on the other end don't know to expect this, so they hang up when the line goes dead. Needless to say, this is a huge pain in the butt.
It's great to pay $15/month instead of $40/month for a basic phone service, but if the service is intermittent, the savings doesn't mean much. And since it takes so long to change a phone number over, I don't feel that I can easily switch back to normal phone service."
"Horrible customer service, Call them to get service but my number wasn't available so I told them I would wait till it was. Received a phone call back from them 2 weeks later where they told us are number was available, so we ordered. THen the nightmare started. I hooked up the equipment with no problem & things were working great, but my number hadn't been transferred, so I called them. They then tell me that my number isn't portable! I tell them the only reason I got it was because they called telling me it was!
Anyway, I tell them to cancel at once & they hit my bank account for $41 dollars that same day! They tell me it will be refunded once I return the equipment (at my cost) I then e-mail them telling them about there sales person lack of knowledge, they return me an e-mail they basically says a generic apology & here is a qoute: "We apologize for the inconvenience made to you and please co-operate with us to serve you our best."
??CO-OPERATE?? they never addressed the actaull problem all they are worried about is there equipment! I was blown away by this horrible support and amazed at the lack of care they had for my business. I will definatly go with some other VOIP company when my number becomes available!
Stay away from this company!"
"customer service was very poor-could not get system to work after 3 calls to customer service could not receive land line calls-tried to blame it on local carrier which had nothing to do do with the system. did not deliver as promised 39.95 to discontinue service."
"I tried this voip service for 5months and their customer service was terrible. Most of the time I couldn't understand the tech and the rest of the time I couldn't even get through.
When dialing a number I would get "this is an invalid number", so I would try it 5 or 6 times and finally it would go through. The techs could not figure out what the problem was.
Then when I terminated my service they charged me $39 termination fee. Avoid this company. I have since switched to sunrocket and I am satisfied so far."
"Although customer service can sometimes leave a lot to be desired, the stability of the service itself and the call quality is exceptional. I even ported my existing phone number over and it took less than 2 weeks total time (not business days)."
