"At the time of this review my issue has not yet been resolved. I will amend my review when it is resolved to report the outcome.
In December I downsized into a smaller house on a dirt road due to some recent financial hardship. We anticipated a large snowstorm so I decided to order tire chains. I wanted good ones, so I went to the Vulcan Tire website to buy some Thule CS-10 chains. I told their site what size tires I have (225-70-R14) and it told me that I needed -102 size chains. I paid $179 for them and had them shipped to me.
The storm came and we were snowed in at our house. I took them out of the box, and followed the instructions to mount them. These are self-tightening chains, so you basically wrap them around the back of the tire and attach a bunjee cord. When you start moving, the cord tightens and the chains become tight and centered. I did this by rolling backwards to allow the chains to tighten. The bunjee cord reached the end of its travel and the chains were still not tight. They were too big. I removed the chains and placed them back in the box (they were a little dirty at this point because of the self-tensioning step).
I went inside and pulled up Thule's website to check the sizing. In fact, they do not recommend the -102 chains for my tire size at all! I determined that I needed a -100 size for my tires, not the -102 that their website listed. I called Vulcan's customer support number (which I had to Google since I couldn't find it on their website). I was civil and told the woman that there was an error in their website's sizing tool, and that I would like to exchange the chains for the correct size. I mentioned that I tried the chains but the bunjee cord didn't have enough travel to take up the slack, and that I didn't drive anywhere beyond the few feet to let the tensioning mechanism work. She apologized and said that would be okay, and I was assigned an RMA number.
I was planning to be in Utah the next week for Christmas, so I told her that I would just make a special trip to the warehouse to do the exchange in person. She was fine with this, so I went. When I got to the warehouse I exchanged my chains and went on my way. Everything was fine until on January 16th I was charged another $111 by Vulcan.
When I emailed them about the charge, they told me that they charged my card since the chains were used when I returned them. I explained the story, and that it was impossible to know if they were too large until the tensioning mechanism was engaged by rolling the tire, and that I hadn't driven anywhere. I also reiterated that there was an error in their website's sizing tool that had caused the mixup. They responded again and told me that I should have been able to tell that they were too large before I installed them. This is actually not possible, and I explained that in another email.
So far Vulcan does not seem willing to accept their mistake, and still insists on charging me $111 (plus the $179 that I initially paid). I was willing to make a special trip to their warehouse to save them shipping money, but they are unwilling to admit their mistake and issue me a refund of the $111. This is especially hard for my wife and I as we struggle to pay our bills in these hard economic times. The case is still open, and hopefully they decide to fix their mistake. I will let you know here if they do or not.
UPDATE:
Vulcan Tire ultimately did refund my $111. The manner in which it was handled was not a good experience for me, and I would say that my customer service experience was poor. I was not informed by Vulcan of the extra charge, and it took several emails and phone calls to finally resolve the issue. One of the most frustrating parts of the whole ordeal was the fact that it was impossible to speak to the returns/exchanges department on the phone. I called customer service and they told me that "they don't even have phones". I think it's safe to say that I will not be buying from Vulcan again, although I am pleased that I ultimately did receive a refund."
"Was very impressed with how fast the chains were delivered and the quality of the product! I used the chains in the heavy snow the night they were delivered, I really needed them and they worked great!"
"Do NOT order from Vulcan. The service is HORRIBLE!! The customer service and support representatives are rude and they do NOT know what they're doing! I ordered a couple of tires from them and they had some strange no-hold policy so that if UPS can't deliver it, it gets shipped back immediately, leaving no time for the customer to pick up the package. There wasn't even an option to sign for the package and have UPS leave it at the door. UPS told me the policy is determined by the vendor (Vulcan Tire in this case), which makes sense since different vendors have different policies, but when I called Vulcan Tire's support, I spoke to 2 different representatives, and while one denied the policy, and the other, claiming to be the manager, confirmed it was their policy and said that they wouldn't change it for just one order. I then tried to cancel my order and was told that there's no direct number to call to cancel, everything has to be done through their website. This lack of direct customer support shows that they don't care about their customers' needs. Their support staff then proceeded to argue with me over email how this no-hold policy isn't theirs. At this point, I don't care whose policy it is, all I'm concerned about is getting the order credited back to my account. When they finally credited it, it wasn't for the full amount. I called them again, was put on hold for 10 minutes, just to be told that they'll "look into it" and send me an email later. When I asked to speak to a manager, I was told that he wasn't available and that they can't give me anymore information. What kind of ridiculous service is that???? I've never encountered such poor customer service! I will NEVER order from this place again!! "
"The order came on the day it was supposed to. Easy to order from site. Love the free shipping."
