"BEWARE if you ever have to return anything!
I was a regular customer of ZZF with orders totaling $9,400 over 2 years. I ordered high end items with good margins and never returned anything -- in other words I was a 'bread and butter' customer for them.
On my first return, of an unused motherboard, they charged me a fraudulent $16.00 for missing cables despite the fact that I proved with photographic evidence (from review sites as well as newegg) that the board did not ship with the ridiculous 7 total SATA cables they claimed it should contain.
Why a company would lie and cheat a $9,400 customer out of $16.00 and lose their business forever is just beyond me. Their customer service does not return email."
"I ordered a $280 computer case. I received an email entitled "Order Process" which one would assume would contain something about the order process, but simply listed the order details.
The next day, their web site disappeared without warning. A day later they eventually posted a placeholder page saying their site was down for an upgrade (one of those no-warning upgrades, I guess).
I called their listed number to confirm they had received my order before the site went down. The conversation went like this:
Me: "Hi, I placed an order just before your site went down"
PCAlchemy: "Shame on you!"
Shame on me for placing an order?
Me: "Well can you confirm if you received my order?"
PCAlchemy: "No."
Me: "Can you confirm it when the site comes back up?"
PCAlchemy: "No. You'll have to resubmit the order when the site comes back up."
Fat chance! I find that the true test of customer service is how a retailer behaves during a crisis like their web site going down. In this case they were extremely rude and unhelpful.
Also, it seems that they're being dishonest about their web site status. Nobody does an unplanned upgrade with no notification. It seems much more likely that they were kicked by their hosting provider, and we can only imagine why that might occur. Few of the possible reasons are pluses for PCAlchemy. I say AVOID."
"Gotta love Newegg for actually coming through on a very hard-to-find X850XT PE PCI-E video card. The right card delivered on time as always.
I had previously bought the same card from Zipzoomfly and they shipped me the wrong one, by the next morning when I applied for an RMA they were sold out of the correct card. Thanks to Newegg for coming to the rescue!"
"Preordered a new Athlon64 X2 CPU. I really needed the processor on time for a demo and there were some allocation issues, but Monarch really bent over backwards to ensure that I got the CPU in time. I still think it's an unusual practice to charge credit cards at the time of order rather than time of ship, but in all other aspects Monarch has shown that they have an extraordinary commitment to customer service.
Update 9/6/2005. I gave them another chance and ordered a couple of WD 400GB hard drives that I needed by the end of the week. I received an order confirmation email. Sometime later I got an automated response that they had failed to verify my credit card billing address. I checked their order confirmation email and the address was correct. So, they screwed up again. Unfortunately, I didn't notice their error until after they closed, so I lost a shipping day. Since they've failed to complete 2 orders on time in a row, I'm just inclined to have the drives overnighted from some other supplier. Even when Monarch is cheaper it isn't worth this hassle. I've got pages worth of orders from NewEgg without a single problem.
Update later 9/6/2005: I just checked my online banking and Monarch HAS CHARGED ME IN FULL for the order they say they can't verify the billing address for! Un-freaking-believable."
