- Books
and a ton on other small stuff.
Things I like:
- Haven't paid a cent for shipping
- Shipping is almost always timely and when it isn't (i.e. backordered) you can just cancel online and get it somewhere else.
- Their buying experience is the best. Features like customer reviews and links to similar products make informed buying easier.
- Always among the best prices to be found.
Cons:
- Can't really think of anything.
It is and will remain my first choice when I spend my hard earned loot."
"Amazon has an excellent selection of merchandise. I also enjoy the product descriptions and user reviews. Where Amazon fails me is in customer service. There are numerous mistakes made on the shipping costs throughout my purchase history. ANY time I have to call customer service I cringe at thought. If I drank, I'd go have a double before calling them. I always have to state my case over and over. Their answers never address what I am saying. It is as if they are reading a script. They always use the formula of telling me several times it is my error and that nothing can be done. Then they put me on hold, then offer me a gift certificate. If I still hold out, they put me on hold and credit my account for the shipping. It is such an ordeal that my blood pressure shoots up. Often I am tempted to let them keep the shipping charge because it is not worth the immense effort of trying to communicate with them. I have NEVER had them reply to me as though they understood the English language. Though they eventually correct their errors, it does not make up for what the customer has to suffer through in order to achieve it."
"On Feb 1, 2007, I placed an order for a Braun Oxyjet 8900 electric toothbrush + oral irrigator with Amazon.com. First they told me on Feb 21 that my order would be delayed, and delivered by Mar 23. On Mar 19 they notified me that my order was delayed again. No explanation was given. There is no shortage of this product on the US market, so I don't understand why they keep delaying. Today I finally canceled my Amazon order and ordered it from a different company, who shipped promptly. In the future, I will try to avoid Amazon."
"I've ordered NUMEROUS things from Amazon.com and I've never had a single bad experience. The last thing I order from them was a music CD that I ordered on 2/27/07.
As per usual, the online transaction was extremely smooth. Using "Standard Shipping" the item was shipped out the very next day (2/28/07). And it was delivered on March 6th, 2007.
Communication is good. I always get a confirmation email confirming my purchase. And I always get a 2nd email telling me that my package has been shipped. And they always include a tracking number for convenience.
Packaging was, and is always, great. And the item arrived in perfect condition. I couldn't ask for more. I've been a regular customer of Amazon.com for years and I don't see that changing any time soon.
I think some of the problem people have with Amazon.com is that they represent different companies. You might purchase a product using Amazon's website, but the item might actually be coming from a different company altogether. So, if something goes out of stock or is late shipping, it might not be Amazon's fault. It might actually be an entirely different vendor's fault. Make sure to look over your orders carefully so you know who's responsible.
In my opinion, Amazon.com is great. Do not hesitate to buy from them. They have always been professional & trustworthy."
"WOW!! I do not understand how they have this low of a rating here. I have ordered tons of stuff from Amazon, mostly books, CDs and DVDs but I always have an excellent experience. In stock status is usually accurate and their web site is a pleasure to use.
Anyway, I ordered a Sony DSC-H5 digital camera at around 3:00 in the afternoon and selected the next day shipping for like $4.00, that's right four dollars!! I am an Amazon prime member, which gives me free 2 day shipping on everything I order from them, as long as it is an item they sell themselves. The Prime membership also gives me greatly reduced rates on expedited shipping as well. So, the next day around 2:00 PM the camera shows up at my door. WOW!! Oh, and they had the best price anywhere too, on both the camera and a 2gb memory stick for it. I am very happy and the new camera is awesome.
Yes, the Prime membership is $79 bucks a year, but with all the movies, books, music and the occasional electronics or household item we order, it is a big savings. Shipping from most online stores will nickel and dime you to death."

"I have had several problems with Amazon. I only placed an order with them again recently because someone sent me a giftcard. One thing they do is say that an item usually ships in 2-3 for example but once you place your order it gives a ship dates sometimes 2-3 weeks out; I dont like that. I placed an order for a humidifier that showed it was in stock. 2 days after placing my order I got an email saying the product was on backorder and it would be at least a month before they might even have it, and if not they would automatically cxl my order. They shouldnt be telling customers a product is in stock ready to ship if it isnt. "I have been shopping with Amazon for a long time now. I have never been dissatisfied and came back regularly. I like their recommendation system that often helps me find useful items. There have been a few technical glitches here and there. For example, sometimes I use a different billing and shipping addresses. Most of the time it works well but once my credit card was denied. Amazon takes its sweet time to inform one of problems and then a whole order gets delayed. A smaller company may handle that much better: you can call them and talk to them but not with Amazon. Still, they had the best price I could find and you can always trust them.
All in all, I recommend Amazon, especially for its recommendation system, customer reviews of products, and reliability."
"I have been ordering from Amazon since April 2001 and only once have I ever had a problem, and that was in the very beginning.
Mostly I have used just Amazon, but a few times I needed to use their partners, never any trouble.
The only time I questioned anything was when I purchased some books used from a seller. I received the merchandise no problem, but the seller tried to ask for more money for shipping. I contacted Amazon and they dealt with it. When I went back to look at the seller's ratings, well, I should have done that first, but it was one of my first purchases.
If the product is actually shipping from Amazon itself, I don't hesitate. Are they always the lowest price? No! Are they lowest price at least 90% of the time? Yes! Do I get my merchandise undamaged? So far, 100% of the time! Do I get my merchandise quickly? You bet!
Will my good fortune with Amazon continue? I hope so, but if it doesn't and something happens, that doesn't immediately take away 6 years of excellent service. "
"Pre-ordered a book with free shipping. When the book came into stock they didn't ship it and are claiming it will ship sometime over the next two months!! What is the point of pre-ordering an item if they won't ship it to you when it comes into stock? I canceled my order and ordered it from Bookpool instead. Amazon's service has got very sloppy over the past year or two."
"I almost always have good luck with Amazon.com. Not only is their selection enormous, but it's easy to find the exact product you're looking for and then see what previous customers thought about both the product and their ordering experience. The Panasonic HDTV I just bought from Amazon was over $150 lower than Costco. And that's almost always my experience with Amazon.com. Shipping is usally prompt, and free if you're not in a hurry to get what you ordered. Their estimated receipt dates are usually too conservative and you get your shipment days before it's scheduled to arive. But around the Holidays, Amazon.com does not always get you what you ordered in a timely manner even if you don't use the free shipping option. If you do choose the free shipping option, there's a very good chance you won't get what you ordered by the promised date or anywhere close to that date. Fortunately though when that happens, you can cancel any order that hasn't shipped and buy elsewhere. "
