"I can not put enough stress on how bad this company is. I was late to turn books back in so they charged me over $200 in late fees and purchasing the books. Which is understandable is I intended to keep the books. I called a representative and she said I could return them and get a refund. I went on their website to try to return the books and the site would not let me. I called the hot line again and another representative told me I could not get a refund.(Neither of the represenatives knew wtf they were talking about, and denied me to talking to a supervisor to work something out) He said I could sell the books back. I tried to do that but they only wanted to give me $45 for the books they charged me $200 for. I sold only 3 of the 4 books to amazon and they gave me $100 for. CHEGG IS A RIP OFF. It sounds good to rent books cheap and give them back but in the long run your better off buying the books and selling them back to a site like amazon."
"Horrible! i ordered a book and they took 3 days to tell me that they cant deliver it...In those three days the price on other site either went up by $100 or were sold out. I called customer service and they were rude. Stay away from these crooks"
"Great customer service! I missed my due date and was charged for the books, but after calling in and talking with a representative, they allowed me to send them back! I was send a return label while I was still on the phone! I am so relieved, this just made my terrible day so much better."
"I am pretty happy with Chegg. I don't understand any of the bad reviews here. I have rented for about 4 semesters now and I have NEVER had a problem. I have always been credited for returns and notified when they get my books after the rental period. I have always gotten my order in good time.
I do notice that I am finding more competitors with comparable pricing. Amazon has a great buy back program and many of the used books there I can buy for the same price to rent from Chegg. For the first semesters in a while I found all my books cheaper else where. I only needed two books and it was cheaper to buy one from Amazon and the other from Ebay vs. rent from Chegg. And I will hopefully be able to sell them back to Amazon after the semester.
I love Chegg and I will definitely shop there every semester, but we do seem to have more options now. (They need to delete the jersey shore spin off commercial though. TURN OFF)"
"CHEGG SUCKS SO MUCH. I rented a textbook three weeks ahead of the time, so I'd have it on time for the class I needed it for. I even wrote an email to the company stating the importance of receiving the book in a timely manner, and they promised me not to worry. The book came within a week. It was the wrong book. Of course this happened over the holidays, and once they re-opened for business, I was left with ONE WEEK to receive the correct book.
I was more or less on the phone with different people ALL day trying to figure my order out. The last guy I spoke to clearly had NO idea what he was talking about, and at the end of my two hour plus phone call, we were back at square one.
I've never rented a book before, this was my first experience, and it sucked. Never again. Amazon all the way."
"I have used Chegg for the last three semesters. I really liked their service, except for their return policy on this last order. So I get an email saying that my books are due Dec.19th. So I send them via UPS on the 19th (this was a Sunday). I was then charged almost $300 on Monday because I 'had not returned them on time'. They then retracted the charge after I notified them that I had sent them, but RECHARGED me on the 23th (yes, day before xmas eve) when they received them. So what did that do, SCREWED ME OVER for Christmas. It led to my account overdrafting SEVERAL times and I can expect my return in 3-5 business days. Such bull$h!t. whatever. NEVER doing business with tthem again."
"WOW, I was just going through the site adding books to my cart when it occurred to me to check out reviews on Chegg. And sure enough I came across this site and am GLAD I did. Not to mention the Chegg Representative on this forum only replies to their unsatisfied customers (it ain't foolin' anyone, btw).
Horrible ratings, need I go further? Nah.

"Honestly i expected a lot more. First off, after you place your oder for rental... it takes much longer to receive it than specified. i bought a few books on amazon (i didn't have amazon prime at the time) and rented others off chegg and the chegg books arrived well over a week later than the amazon books. i opted for no offers from chegg however my email inbox was spammed with it. Also i opted for a text alert to remind me when my books were due.. i never received these text alerts. Lastly i returned the books by the due date yet was charged an extension!!! and i have a feeling that this happens a lot because when you call customer service it goes straight to tell you how to reverse a extension fees. i feel they charge an extension fee right away because some people might not realize it to reverse it.. just a way to scam you and get more money. i like the idea of renting books because i hate having to go through the trouble of selling after the end of each term. however i feel chegg has a lot of false promises and a lot to improve on. i will not be using their service again. "
"This company is all bad. The first order I put in, I got one book that was essentially photocopies of a book with the cover, 3-hole-punched and loosely "bound" with three keyrings. That's not to mention that it wasn't the edition that I ordered.
I was outraged and demanded by money back, then decided I would never use them again, since the customer service was horrible in the process to get the book back to them.
Then, to make matters worse, when I go to return my second book I ordered from them, they charge me a late fee although I sent the book back days ago. I used their shipping label so I am confident they could have checked with UPS before charging my bank account for a late fee that I didn't deserve. But I know exactly what's going on here: charge everyone the late fee, then have them have to deal with the hour wait time if they want to. Then we get off with thousands of extra dollars.
Currently I am waiting for customer service to get back to me, it's been about an hour. I'm sure they'll apologize all over the place, but the fact of the matter is that this is a dirty, untrustworthy company that does not deliver good products.
Disgusting. Absolutely horrible. Did I mention the loosely bound book came with a torn cover? Yeah."
" I've been using Chegg for most of my books since starting college and have been extremely satisfied except for one occasion- when a third party vendor situation took weeks, making me scramble for an alternative source for a class.
So I know what that feels like. However, if I take into account the savings, general reliability of the company, and Amazing customer service when slip ups do come up, I will definitely take the "risk" of using Chegg again. The pros outweigh the cons in my humble opinion. For instance, this semester I had a big "whoops" and wasn't able to ship back until one day after they were due. Chegg's customer service took care of it with NO problem. Also, all books have been new, or at the very least, in decent, usable condition.
I've had far worse shipping issues with amazon, and even though I might save some extra money like another reviewer suggested, by buying Amazon and later selling- its not worth the hassle for me. I save plenty by renting, and the books are out of my hair CONVENIENTLY. Unlike elsewhere, If I have an issue, I speak with a LIVE, and genuinely helpful customer service rep.
I will continue using Chegg. I'm aware that their expansion with third party vendors means more book selections and more possible delays and mix ups. I also know that, if I wanted absolutely no problems , I'd have to buy a new full price text or used at the college book store- often triple than what Chegg offers. If it came to that, I have the 30 day guarantee and customer service. So, in a way, its kind of win-win for gaming the system of the overpriced text book racket in this country. Over three semesters, I couldn't rely on Chegg for only a couple of books. The coupons, email/voice mail reminders, savings, and ease with dealing with Chegg more than makes up for a couple of failed expectations in getting the best possible deal.

"I had a great experience with Chegg! I was having a difficult time coming to terms with paying a trillion billion dollars for my math book when I already detested math. A friend of mine suggested Chegg and I'm so glad she did. I received my book faster than I had expected. I really like the tree-planting feature and the friendly phone reminder to return my book on time is a nice touch. I will definitely be using Chegg again in the future."
"Is there something wrong with the Chegg website. I am trying to get a free return label and their website is blank. Chegg has been great for my needs this semester. I have only ordered from them one semester but everything showed up correctly and I also got an extra month free!"
"I used Chegg one semesters, enticed by the huge savings compared to the cost of used (much less new) textbooks. The books arrived within the estimated time-frame (I found a free shipping coupon); however, one book never turned up (apparently they'd ordered it from Half.com and the seller didn't offer tracking). I complained about this and Chegg credited my account for the book.
As an aside, I also liked Chegg's little extras--like planting a tree or the pen that comes with the order.
Anyway, due to medical reasons, I had to take a leave of absence a few weeks into the semester. I returned the books (using their print-out prepaid label)--just a few days out of the 30-day money-back guarantee. I talked to an online chat representative, who placed a credit in my Chegg account.

"I've had the worst experience with Chegg out of any company I have ever dealt with. I ordered my books early so I would have them in time for school to start. First, they sent me only the workbook for my Spanish book, so I had to return it. Even though it was Chegg's fault, they were very stingy with refunding my shipping. After complaining, I finally received my refund. Soon, school started and I showed up to my economics class with the other book I ordered through Chegg. Even though I used the correct ISBN, I had the wrong economics text book. This was close to the end of my 30 day unconditional guarantee, but I went online and saw if I dropped off the book at UPS before the return date, I could still receive my refund. The Chegg website says to drop-off the book and receive a drop-off receipt. To any person, dropping off a book and scanning it are two completely different things, but to Chegg it's not. Apparently I was supposed to get the UPS store to scan it IMMEDIATELY? This was NOT stated on the Chegg website. I've dealt with multiple people with this issue, and still haven't received any results. I chatted online with customer service, and they said a supervisor would call. A supervisor called and left a message at my parents' home phone, saying I would receive a refund to my account. I expressed specifically that I wanted my money COMPLETELY returned, so I thought my account would be my checking, since that's what they did before. My refund was supposed to show up within 24 hours, and did not. I contacted customer service over the phone today, and I was told my Chegg account was refunded and it said this expressly in the telephone message, which it DID NOT. I still didn't get any results and my supposed Chegg credit doesn't even appear on my account. I'm waiting for another manager to call back. According to the various representatives I've talked to, this is all MY fault since it didn't scan. I'm seriously disappointed in Chegg. For a site that's supposed to help poor college students save money, they're being miserly and have horrible customer service. I will never rent from them again or recommend renting from them."
"This site made me so mad. I placed an order for an online access code for a Nutricalc. program & I recieved a big, flat Chegg cardboard in the mail (which is a waste of paper, by the way). I had never seen anything like that so I tried opening the thin piece of cardboard, but to no surprise, there were no contents in it. So I looked at the label on the cardboard to see if the code was printed on there somewhere but it wasn't. I contacted the Chegg customer service & after telling her the situation she immediately told me I had recieved a defected order & that they would either refund the money or send me the "book" at no cost that was supposedely supposed to come with the access code. I told her I would like to recieve the book & then she said that I would have to place a new order. So I guess it wouldn't have been at "no cost" like she said. So then I asked her what the name of this book was that I needed & she responded that she didn't know & I would have to ask my profesor. So I decided to just be refunded but they did not refund my shipping. So I wasted my time with this site & am now $7 short."
