"These comments apply to computers, only. Dell is in the service business. It sells computers to generate service. THey make very little profit on a computer. You can see how they push "service plans" on you. If you happen to get a flawless computer you will love Dell. If you happen to get a machine with a problem, you are in trouble. The odds? I have seen estimates that one in five are dead in the box, or die quickly. If you get a bad machine, you will speak or on-line chat with tech people who read answer from cue-cards. Often, problems are complex and that method does not work.

I got a machine where the problem was a faulty hard drive, not uncommon. A dead sector here and there cause erratic problems. Not one of six or seven tech reps I contacted over the course of a full year recommended the "chkdsk" utility and I did not know about it. I do now. The problem was discovered just after my warrenty expired and Dell's response was as predicted: no help. If you can find a local store, not a "big-box," that is reputable, any extra cost you pay will be well worth it. Support the little guys.

"I received my camera on April 27th! It is great and is made in Japan.In spite of the bad customer reviews of Dell on the internet,I actually received it in less than 5 business days.I have to say, it’s quite an experience.
I ordered a Canon S2 IS online Apr. 22nd. It was the lowest price on the internet and I got free shipping. However, after I received email from Dell, I noticed that the shipping date is on the May 30th. The website also showed that the item will be shipped in 6+ weeks. It seemed the item was on back order. I don’t want to order something that I have to wait for more than a month to receive so I called Dell to see if there’s a mistake.
The first time I called, I talked to 2 sales ladies. The first lady with an Indian accent was nice but I had difficult time understanding her. The funny part is that she also tried to sell me a printer. The second lady told me that Customer Care which opens only on the week days can help me with any adjustment of my order. She suggested me to wait until Monday. So I hanged up the phone and got online to check the customer reviews of Dell.
I was shocked to see tons of negative reviews on several websites. I felt really terrible so I decided to cancel my order. I called the second time in the afternoon. A sales lady with an Indian accent picked up. She was also nice but told me that she was in charge of different products and she couldn’t cancel my order. She gave me the phone number of Customer Care for me to call on Monday. Yet, she still transferred my call and suggested me to give it a try at the Sales Department that is in charge of electronics and accessories.
While expressing my concerns about the shipping date to the third person that, he provided me a free upgrade to the Next Day Delivery. I asked him if they had the camera in stock and could ship the camera to me right away. I certainly don’t want to receive my camera on May 31st, right? He couldn’t give me the specific shipping date but he assured me that I would receive the camera in about 5 to 6 business days. Because I saw people complained about having foreign representatives, I asked him if he was in United States. He told me he was actually in Manila (Philippines.) I was surprised because he barely had any accent (at least I couldn’t tell.) He told me that the camera was out of stock earlier but it’s in stock now.
Well…it was an offer that I just couldn’t miss. So I changed my mind and decided to keep my order. He gave me a new set of Order Numbers. I was cautious because I didn’t want to end up with ordering 2 cameras. He promised me that after he had changed my order, the previous order would become “Canceled” automatically. I didn’t feel relaxed because the first order on the internet account was still “In production” not “Canceled” after he told me everything had been taking care of. He told me not to worry about the first order because after they upgrade the website couple hours later, the record would be correct.
Unfortunately, the first order was still there on the 24th. I then wrote an email specifying this cancellation problem to Dell, however I only received an automatic reply. I thought about doing my own cancellation online according to the email but I was afraid that I might cancel the second order and end up with no camera. I was tired of worrying about the order so I decided to put the whole things behind me and gave Dell a week to deliver my camera. The truth is, I was hesitate to call because of the warnings on the internet saying that you would spend half an hour on the phone and still solve nothing. I finally called Dell Customer Care on the 26th. It was pretty fast when I reached the person who could help. I want to check the shipping date and the annoyingly incorrect record on the internet.
I was told that TWO cameras are already shipped out. I explained to him that it was Dell’s responsibility to give me a full refund and pay for the returned shipping fee. He told me he would give me a call next Thursday or Friday after I receive the second camera. He will also arrange a Pick Up so I don’t have to pay for the return shipping. He was polite the whole time and provided me, his name, phone numbers, and the tracking numbers of the two cameras. He also gave me a Case Number regarding the content we discussed over the phone.
His English was very fluent and totally understandable. I specified the English speaking abilities of those representatives because people mentioned online that Dell assigned fluent English speakers (Americans) to the Sales Department and assigned Foreigners with bad English to Customer Care. In my case, I actually spoke 2 foreigners in Sales Department. And Joy, who is in the Customer Care, speaks good English.
On May 1st, the second camera arrived and I called Dell the next day. I called Joy first; however, I couldn’t get in touch with him. I end up talked to another representative, Austin, who arranged a pick up for me. On May 3rd, UPS came and took away the second camera. I am happy with the result and now I am waiting for the full refund.

"I HAVE BEEN ORDER FROM DELL FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS, WITH 3 DESKTOPS- THE 5150'S WITH P4 3.2 & 3.4 , 1 GB. RAM AND 250 HD..YES .. ALL WITH FREE 19"LCD. DELL IS THE LOWEST OF THE LOW. "Dell has gone to Hell! Over the past several years I have bought 3 desktops, 1 laptop and a handheld from Dell. The equipment works fine, but the ordering process has become impossible. I recently ordered online an Inspiron 710m at a great price with a 35% off coupon. Well, they screwed up a sound option that is not available but was a choice upon configuration so 5 days later I get an email that they cancelled my order and to resubmit. So I go to their website and resubmit..........the price is now $200 higher even with the coupon. I call and spend almost 40 minutes on the phone being transfered from one broken-english speaking Indian to the next.......finally, one guy asks which menu I chose the 710m from. They actually have several ways to get to a system configuration screen, and each screen gives a DIFFERENT final price. No kidding. The first was configured from the Notebooks menu, and when I configured it from the notebooks Icon on the home & home office button, it was cheaper. Moral of the story is Dell has sunk to a new low. I will be unlikey to buy from them again."

"I ordered an E510 back in March. The on-line order process went smoothly, and the machine, monitor and all periphals arrived about 3 business days later. Due to my home office being remodeled, the computer was not installed and running until May 1. I purchased Dell's installation service, and they were easy to access and work with (I had 3 changes of installation dates). So far everything is working as it should, and I really love Dell's new 1707 LCD monitor-it arrived with all pixels alive and well. This is my second Dell purchase and this one went much more smoothly than the one six years prior. I will update as time progresses, but so far, so good."

"Order a camera from Dell and they confirmed it would ship on certain date. Two weeks later I noticed they had cancelled my order without informing me by phone or email. If I knew I could not obtain that camera within a couple of days I would have ordered it from another vendor who had it in stock. They said they over sold the item so they cancelled my order and will credit my account. They did say "sorry" what good that made."

"I have been ordering computers from Dell, Gateway, Sony, Compaq and many others for a good 10 years now. I can honestly say that DELL / GATEWAY AND SONY are my TOP 3
Dell has its quirks/problems like every other but they are a good company with outstanding equipment.
I surely pay more for Dell than the others, but I don't mind paying a little more for something as long as I'm getting what I am paying for.
Dell is my #1 choice and my guesstimate is that I have ordered well over 200 machines from them alone in the last decade.

"Dell has unbeatable bargains on LCD's and computers. I just wish tax wasn't charged, and that they would use AMD processors.
Buying from Dell as a home consumer, their service cannot be matched. My orders usually get delivered within 2days with ground shipping. I recently purchased an NVIDIA 7900GT video card, and the shipment was delayed for nearly two weeks, but I'm not going to flame DELL for a product that is sold out nearly everywhere. Many thanks for the awesome deals.
However, as a large business customer for my company, and having to deal with a Dell sales representative is often times aggrevating because they won't match the discounts and promotions given to small business/home users. Their employee purchase program is a complete JOKE!

"Placed an order for a Canon S2, a camera bag, SD memory card and a charger. The S2 was listed with "Usually ships in 24 hours" and no information of back orders was given. The day after all the items ship except for the S2 which I'm now informed is back ordered with an ETA of 6/20. That's almost 9 weeks later!! Needless to say the price of the camera would be less at that time. Tried to resolve the issue using the on-line Chat help, but the CSR's just cut and paste from the CSR manual with Dell policy bla bla which is completely useless."

"I bought Dell's new 19 inch LCD and LOVE it (new 1907 UltraSharp LCD). Color (after calibration in windows control panel) is vibrant and accurate. Also I play Counter Strike (a fast paced shooter game) on it and have no problems. "

"I bought an Axim x51v, the product arrived in a box where the tamper proof tape had been carefully lifted and someone had gone through the items in the box then attempted to reseal but the glue on the tape was no longer good so I received the box with an opening along the length of the box. Husband did not pay see the condition when he signed the UPS acknowledgement and only noticed after he signed and UPS driver gave him the box which he brought into the house. Only noticed condition when he was trying to figure out who the sender was. I called Dell when I got home but they were closed??? so I did a chat thing online, first time I got disconnected, second attempt I got through after waiting about 25 mins. Rep sent replacement which I received middle of last week. Two days ago, I received a letter asking for the original item to be returned but no prepaid shipping tag was enclosed (per their letter). Tried calling toll free number for returns but each time put on hold, so I emailed, no response after 2 hours so I called again, office closed, they are on central time. Customer service is real bad. Here is the bad part. I did the chat log to get help transferring data from my Palm to the Axim but the rep could not help and suggested that I call the toll free number which I did. Toll free rep said Dell does not offer tech support for data transfer, I asked to speak to a supervisor, he put me on hold then came back and said supervisor said to call Palm for help????????? Before I bought the Axim, I called sales suppt and they told me it was very easy to transfer data from Palm to Dell - no so!!! I am going to see if I can get someone else to help with data transfer, otherwise this will be a return. Tech support is useless at Dell, I can't imagine what I have to go through when I run into some of the other problems reported by other Axim users. Palm at least is very responsive each time I called."

"The item description page for a digital camera clearly said "usually ships in 24 hours." I check my status online the next day and it says that the item is back ordered and I should receive it next month. Dell has an extremely bad habit of falsifying estimated shipping dates and whether an item is actually in stock or not. They didn't even send me an email saying that the item is backordered."
