"I usually get malware mails several times a week and considered myself competent to recognize them. but 2 days ago I fell for a very unusual scam. It was triggered by clicking on a rather odd photograph within a purported news item. The screen exploded in red flashing lights, an urgent voice saying you have been hacked call microsoft immediately on this number. Which given all the symptoms, Microsoft logos, loud warnings, urgency etc I was silly enough to call. To cut a long story short this led to remote access, ultimately release of my credit card details after which when enquiries about my debit card started the penny dropped and I shut down, called the bank, credit card cancelled, two suspicious debits declined. New card issued.
This left the problem of remote access to the laptop, bank said turn it off, reboot before opening again. On searching the web, one specialist advert caught the eye amongst many, namely Geeks2U which advertised assistance for Seniors and since I am 82 years old I thought this was the one for me. Worked out well, an IT specialist came to the house next day, took less than hour and declared the computer clean. And explained what he was doing. Competent, thorough and altogether very satisfactory. Although I do hope to not have to call for help again,
